The Gundersen Health Medical Foundation’s annual Steppin’ out in Pink event helps
raise money for local breast cancer research and other breast cancer care initiatives. Throughout
the year leading up to this main event, there are multiple smaller fundraisers in which all
proceeds are donated. On June 21st of 2018, I was able to participate in one of these for the 10th
annual Festival Foods Wine and Beer tasting at the Cargill Room in La Crosse, WI. This
ticketed event offered food with a wide selection beer and wine tasting, door prizes, a silent
auction, and a variety of raffles.
Upon my arrival, 45 minutes prior to doors opening, I helped set up and organize the
tickets that I would be selling for the raffle baskets. There were 11 raffle baskets total with
various themes. Some of these baskets included things such as movie vouchers, local gift cards,
car detailing, electronics, beer samplers, etc. Doors opened at 5:30pm and guests could purchase
raffle tickets up until 7:30 pm, when the winners would be drawn. The cost was $20 for 25 or $1
per ticket. When it came time to pick the basket winners, I wrote down the winning numbers on
a large dry erase board. This allowed for them to be viewed at a later time if they were not heard
over the microphone. The door prize drawing followed. As the names were called, and the
guests came up to claim their items, I helped coordinate the distribution of the various prizes.
This included items such as tumblers, bags, and outdoor folding chairs, to name a few. Around
8:30-9pm, when the night was wrapping up, we cleared glasses, table cloths, leftover food, etc.
Reflecting upon the night, I am happy I was able to witness the friendship, laughs, and
the joining together for a great cause. Meeting the many passionate people who organize and
attend these events has allowed me to feel more connected to the organization I am currently
interning with. I think it is amazing that they not only have their main Steppin’ out in Pink event
but also many other events that contribute to the momentum of their fundraising goals.
