Topic Change Description
Draft A (2014-10-30)
This is a draft.
2 AAU Introduction
An AAU3940 is a wideband FDD RF module that integrates the antenna and RF module. An
AAU3940 supports the LTE only (LO) mode when operating in 1.8 GHz and supports the
UMTS and LTE modes when operating in 2.1 GHz.
2.1 Exterior
This section describes the AAU exterior.
2.2 Ports and Indicators
This section describes the ports and indicators on an AAU.
2.3 Logical Structure
An AAU integrates the antenna and RF unit, and its main functional modules include an
antenna unit (AU), radio units (RUs), and a power module.
2.4 Engineering Specifications
This section describes AAU engineering specifications, including input power specifications,
equipment specifications, and surge protection specifications.
2.1 Exterior
This section describes the AAU exterior.
The following figure shows the AAU exterior.
Ports
The following table describes the ports on an AAU.
Indicators
The following table describes the indicators on an AAU.
Blinking (on for Alarms are generated. The alarms may be caused
1s and off for 1s) by faults on related boards or ports. Therefore,
locate the fault before deciding whether to
replace the module.
Blinking red (on The CPRI link is out of lock because clock
for 1s and off for locking between two modes may fail or the data
1s) rates of optical modules do not match those of
CPRI ports.
Blinking red (on The CPRI link is out of lock because clock
for 1s and off for locking between two modes may fail or the data
1s) rates of optical modules do not match those of
CPRI ports.
l Multiplexes RX and TX signals on the RF channel, which enables these signals to share
the same antenna path. It also filters the RX and TX signals.
Power module A power module provides power for the AU and RU.
Equipment Specifications
The following table lists the equipment specifications of an AAU.
Weight 15 kg (33.07 lb) (without the mounting kit and attachment plate)
NOTE
For details about other engineering specifications of an AAU, see section "AAU3940 Technical
Specifications" in 3900 Series Base Station Technical Description.
3 Optical Module
An optical module transmits optical signals between an optical port and a fiber optic cable.
NOTE
l The exteriors of an optical module and the label on an optical module in this section are for
reference only. The actual exteriors may be different.
l Boards or RF modules supporting only the 1.25 Gbit/s CPRI port rate, for example, the GTMU or
RRU3908 V1, cannot use optical modules supporting a 9.8 Gbit/s CPRI port rate.
l Huawei wireless equipment can only use optical modules that have been certified by Huawei
Wireless Product Line. These optical modules must comply with the following standards and
requirements:
l Specifications required by products in specific application scenarios
l Laser safety standards of IEC 60825-1
l General safety requirements of IEC 60950-1
l For the codes of SFP and QSFP optical modules that have been certified by Huawei Wireless
Product Line, see Spare Parts Catalog.
Exterior
The following figure shows the exterior of an optical module.
4 AAU Cables
Table 4-1 and Table 4-2 list AC AAU cables and DC AAU cables, respectively.
(1) OT terminal (M6, 16 mm2 or 0.025 in.2) (2) OT terminal (M8, 16 mm2 or 0.025 in.2)
NOTE
If the customer prepares the PGND cable, a copper-core cable with a cross-sectional area of 16 mm2 (0.025
in.2) or greater is recommended.
NOTE
If the customer prepares the equipotential cable, a copper-core cable with a cross-sectional area of 16 mm2
(0.025 in.2) or greater is recommended.
Exterior
The following figures show the exteriors of AAU power cables.
NOTE
The colors and structures of cables vary according to countries and regions. If cables are purchased
locally, the cables must comply with local rules and regulations.
Description
The following table describes AAU power cables.
NOTE
l An ODM interconnects a single-mode pigtail and a trunk single-mode fiber optic cable.
l The trunk single-mode fiber optic cables are provided by the customer and must comply with the
ITU-T G.652 standard.
l A multimode fiber optic cable and a single-mode fiber optic cable are connected to a multimode
optical module and a single-mode optical module, respectively.
Exterior
Multimode fiber optic cable: The multimode fiber optic cable has a DLC connector at each
end, as shown in the following figure.
(1) DLC connector (2) Breakout cable (3) Label on the breakout cable
NOTE
l When a multimode fiber optic cable connects a BBU and an AAU, the breakout cable on the BBU
side is 0.34 m (13.39 in.) and the breakout cable on the AAU side is 0.03 m (1.18 in.).
l When a multimode fiber optic cable connects two AAUs, the breakout cable on both sides is 0.03 m
(1.18 in.).
The following figure shows the connection of a multimode fiber optic cable between a BBU
and an AAU.

Single-mode pigtail: The single-mode pigtail has a DLC connector at one end and an FC, LC,
or SC connector at the other end, as shown in the following figure.
(1) DLC (2) Breakout (3) Label on the (4) FC (5) LC (6) SC
connector cable breakout cable connector connector connector
NOTE
l When a single-mode pigtail connects a BBU and an ODM, the breakout cables on the BBU side and
ODM side are 0.34 m (13.39 in.) and 0.8 m (31.50 in.), respectively.
l When a single-mode pigtail connects an ODM and an AAU, the breakout cables on the AAU side
and ODM side are 0.03 m (1.18 in.) and 0.8 m (31.50 in.), respectively.
(1) Single-mode pigtail between a BBU and an ODF (2) Single-mode pigtail between an ODF and an
AAU
Selection Principle
The following table describes the principles for selecting CPRI fiber optic cables.
Less than or Multimode fiber optic cable Connects a BBU and an AAU
equal to 100 When it connects two AAUs, the distance
m (328.08 ft) between the two AAUs must be less than
or equal to 10 m (32.81 ft).
Greater than Multimode fiber optic cable Connects a BBU and an AAU
100 m
(328.08 ft) Recommended: single-mode The single-mode pigtail on the BBU or
and less than fiber optic cable (single- AAU side is connected to the trunk
or equal to mode pigtail and trunk single-mode fiber optic cable using an
150 m single-mode fiber optic ODM.
(492.12 ft) cable)
