Reconocimientos

This component of eQuip is dedicated to all church planters and their spouses and team
members for their commitment to God, for their desire to seeing people won to Jesus Christ,
and for growing the kingdom by the multiplying of New Testament churches.

The Skunk Works Group of the Extension Section of the Home Mission Board had been
researching the activity of house churches or relationship based churches. In this period of
research, we had interviewed Gerald Palmer, who had retired from the Home Mission Board as
vice president of the Missions Section. He was serving in the Northwest and resourcing the
church planting activities. Gerald had developed a tool to help lay planters determine what skills
and abilities they brought into their church planting activity, and this tool also helped them
determine what additional skills or knowledge base they would need to be more effective in
church planting. The Skunk Works obtained this tool and revised it as a tool to use with lay
church planters. It then came to be known as the Church Planter Competencies and
Proficiencies Tool.

As we were working on the Early Stage Church Planting activity, it was determined that
this tool could be of value. With a little revision, it has now become a tool that can be used with
persons involved in church planting and seeking to determine what they bring and what they
need to obtain in terms of character, knowledge and skills.

Repaso
The Psalmist declared that we were fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps. 139:14).
As believers, we know that God has made us for a purpose and that He has a plan for
our lives. By virtue of engaging this particular kind of resource it can be considered a
given that you have acknowledged God’s call upon your life, inviting you into the
adventure of church planting. Because you have said yes, to God’s invitation, it now
becomes your responsibility and the responsibility of others that God has or will put into
your life to make certain that you are adequately equipped for whatever that call may
mean for you.

This resource was designed to help you and your mentor consider which
leadership proficiencies you have or need to have to accomplish your goals and to help
you put into place a learning plan that will guide you in the areas of knowledge, skill,
and character development. It has been said that a learning plan can be thought of as a
“blueprint” that maps out what you hope to learn and/or accomplish. A learning plan
should include specific learning objectives that provide a way to measure progress
toward completion of your goal(s). Learning objectives are brief statements that define
realistic results that can be expected in a specific period of time.

We hope that this resource will be of great value to you and your mentor as you
equip yourself for the adventure of church planting.

Sección 2
Planeación es Bíblica
The wisdom of the ages teaches us to plan. The wisdom literature of the Bible
(Proverbs) teaches us to plan.

I. Hacer Planes.

Proverbs
13:16 “A wise man thinks ahead; a fool doesn’t, and he even brags about it!”

13:19 “It is pleasant to see plans develop.”

16:9 “We should make plans – counting on God to direct us.”

22:3 “A prudent man foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for them; the
simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.”

II. Hacer Planes para Gozo y Propósito.

13:12 “Hope deferred makes the heart sick; but when dreams come true at last,
there is life and joy.”

29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (KJV).

4
III. Hacer Planes después de Conocer los Hechos.

18:13 “What a shame – yes, how stupid! – to decide before knowing the facts!”

18:15 “The intelligent man is always open to new ideas. In fact, he looks for them.”

24:3-4 “Any enterprise is built by wise planning, becomes strong through common
sense, and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts.”

27:23 “Watch your business interests closely. Know the state of your flocks and your
herds.”

IV. Hacer Planes después de Buscar Consejo.

11:14 “With good counselors, there is safety.”

15:22 “Plans go wrong with too few counselors; many counselors bring success.”

20:18 “Don’t go ahead with your plans without the advice of others.”

24:6 “There is safety in many counselors.”

V. Hacer Planes en Dependencia en Dios.

16:1 “We can make our plans, but the final outcome is in God’s hands.”

21:31 “Go ahead and prepare for the conflict, but victory comes from God.”

Aprendizaje Balanceado

As you look at building your personal learning plan, you will need to keep in mind that
your learning plan needs to be a balanced one.

A balanced learning plan deals with three primary areas: knowledge, skill and
character. The first dimension is often demonstrated by understanding, explaining, or
describing a truth. Skill can usually be demonstrated by doing a particular activity such as
preaching, building, or planning. The third dimension of character focuses on being and often
is not as easily measurable. Character qualities, values, and feelings are more intangible and
difficult to qualify or measure. What does the person need to understand (knowledge), do
(skills), or be (character)?

Sección 6
Resultados de Aprendizaje

Now, as you look at the 3-5 priorities that you have already identified from the Church
Planter Competencies Tool and keeping in mind the balance for desired learning, you will next
begin the process of developing your personal learning outcomes. This section explains how
you will go about writing your personal learning outcomes.

Instrucciones para Escribir los Resultados de Aprendizaje

While not commonly part of the learning outcome, it is often helpful to identify who
will check to see if the objective is achieved or be responsible to verify that the objective is
accomplished. This may be your mentor or another teacher/equipper.

The person who will hold me responsible for completing my objectives is:

_________________________________________________________________

A few words of caution are in order about writing learning outcomes. It is difficult to
write specific outcomes for every value or character trait that a person needs to develop.
Learning outcomes are not written in stone but often require refinement and development as
the planter and mentor grow and experience change in their ministry contexts. You are now
ready to begin writing your own Personal Learning Outcomes.

I. Begin first by listing the 3-5 priorities that you identified from using the Church Planter
Leadership Competencies Tool in Column A of Table 3, page 16.

II. Review the examples of desired learning outcomes, Table 2, page 15. You will now
develop your own personal learning plan that reflects this example.

III. There are three ingredients to writing clear learning outcomes. The normal structure of
a learning outcome is: desired action (performance) + conditions for behavior +
standard of evaluation.

1. Begin writing a learning outcome by identifying the behavior desired with a specific action
word. Consider an action word from Column A (green), Table 1, page 14. What word best
communicates the behavior that indicates the intended learning? Transfer that action word

15
to Table 3, Column B, page 16 in conjunction with the appropriate priority that you have
already listed. You will need one action word for each priority that you have listed on page
16.

2. The second ingredient in a learning outcome is a statement of the conditions under

which the behavior will be expected to occur. Conditions may specify time, place, or
relationships of the expected situation. Choose from the samples in Column B (blue) Table
1, page 14. Transfer that condition to Table 3, Column B, page 16. Again, you will need a
condition for each priority that you have listed.

3. The final ingredient in a writing-learning outcome is to specify a standard of evaluation.

While the standard is not absolutely necessary, whenever possible it helps to identify a
meaningful standard. Choose from the samples in Column C (yellow), Table 1, page 14.
Transfer that standard of evaluation to Table 3, Column B, page 16. Please note you may
not always need a standard of evaluation for each priority listed; however, you will always
need an action and condition for each priority.

(Please feel free to add to the list in Columns A, B, and C of Table 1, page 14 as needed.)

4. Now you are ready to add recommended training resources that will help you achieve your
objectives. In many cases the training resources needed may be addressed by a book,
article, Web site, or hands-on learning/training experiences. You will need to consider
training resources that are both formal and informal. Your mentor will be a great source to
help you consider which resources are best for you. Please see Table 4, page 17 for an
example of a completed learning outcome with recommended training resources. You will
add your training resources to Table 3, Column C, page 16.

Please note that an exhaustive list of training resources that corresponds to each of the
proficiencies found in the Church Planter Competencies Tool is available on the NAMB
Church Planting Village Web site at www.churchplantingvillage.net. After logging on, go to
getting started, then click “online training.” Scroll over to “knowledge/understanding” then
click on “Church Planter Competencies Tool with Resources.”
