TEST 4

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST

1. Answer all the questions

2. Give non-exact numerical answer correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place in the case
of angles in degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question
3. You are reminded of the need for clear presentation in your answers
4. At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together
5. The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question
with total score is 75

x2  x  3
1. Without using a calculator, solve the inequality 2 0 [4]
x  3x  4
2. Functions f and g are defined by
2 x
f :x , x  R, x  1
1 x
g : x  1  2 x, x  R
(i) Explain why the composite function fg does not exist [2]
Find an expression for gf (x) and hence, or otherwise, find gf  (5)
1
(ii) [4]
3. A board of directors consists of 9 men and 4 women, one of whom is Mrs. Susi.
A committee consisting of 4 people is to be formed from this board of directors and it has been
decided that it must contain at least one woman
(i) How many different committees can be formed ? [3]
(ii) How many different committees can be formed that have Mrs. Susi as a member ? [ 2 ]
3t  t 3
4. By first expanding tan2    , show that tan 3  where t  tan [3]
1  3t 2
Hence solve the equation 4t 3  3t 2  12t  1  0 [7]
5. The line y  x  3 intersects the curve y 2  y  2 x 2  x  1 at two points.
Prove that the line is the normal to curve at exactly one of these points [8]
6. Using the law of change of base of logarithms, or otherwise, show that
1
log b a  [2]
log a b
Hence, or otherwise, solve the equation 2 log 9 x  1  2 log x 3 [5]

7. In the quadrilateral ABCD, angle ABC + angle ADC = 180o. The lengths of the sides are given by
AB = a, BC = b, CD = c, DA = d and the length of the diagonal AC is x
(i) Using the cosine formula, show that
(ab  cd ) x 2  (ac  bd )(ad  bc) [4]
(ii) Given that BD = y, show that xy  ac  bd [4]
8. For events A and B it is given that P( A)  0.7 , P( B)  0.6 and P( A | B ' )  0.8
Find
(I) P( A  B ' ) [2]
( ii ) P( A  B) [2]
(iii) P( B ' | A) [2]
For a third event C, it is given that P(C )  0.5 and that A and C are independent,
(iv)Find P( A '  C ) [2]
(v) Hence state an inequality satisfied by P( A '  B  C ) [2]

9. It is given that a, b, c are the first three terms of a geometric progression. It is also given that a, c, b
are the first three terms of an arithmetic progression

ab
(i) Show that b 2  ac and c  [2]
2
2
b b
(ii) Hence show that 2      1  0 [2]
a a

(iii) Given that the sum to infinity of the geometric progression Is S, find S in terms of a [4]

10.The curve C has parametric equations

x  t 2  4t y  t3  t2

(i)Sketch the curve for  2  t  1 [2]

The tangent to the curve at the point P where t = 2 is denoted by l

(ii) Find the Cartesian equation of l [3]

(iii) The tangent l meets C again at the point Q. Use a non-calculator method to find the
coordinates of Q [4]
