ABSTRACT

This study aims to evaluate the level of self-efficacy for Physical Education teachers (PE) from
secondary schools in Selangor and to identify surrounding factors which are related to the level of
such self-efficacy. Survey is chosen as a research method and three locations are selected at
random from the Petaling Utama vicinity for urban category. Moreover, Hulu Selangor and Sabak
Bernam for rural areas category. The number of sample for this study is 307 PE teachers. Data is
collected through questionnaire as an instrument. Validity of the language used in the instrument
is obtained by referring to three Malay language experts and three English language experts. In
addition, for subject experts were referred to in order to obtain the validity of items for the
questionnaire. Pilot study for this research was conducted with 108 PE teachers from Northern
Kinta area, Perak before the execution of the actual research to get the reliability and validity for
the survey instrument namely Teachers Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) which has been adapted.
Cronbach Alpha test was performed to obtain reliability and Analysis Factor was used to get the
validity of the instrument. Actual data from the study is analyzed using MANOVA statistics and
Multiple Regression. Findings indicate that there are significant differences in the level of
students’ participation, instructional strategy, class management and self-efficacy between PE
teachers in rural and urban areas, urban and rural male PE teachers, and urban and rural female
PE teachers. There is also a significant difference between option and non-option PE teachers.
Nevertheless, there is no significant difference on the level of students’ participation, instructional
strategy, class management and self-efficacy between male and female PE teachers. Multiple
Regression analysis shows that there is a significant relation between five surrounding factors and
PE teachers’ self-efficacy. This study provides information to many parties on PE teachers’ self-
efficacy and surrounding influential factors for their self-efficacy. It is an information which can
be used to improve teaching profession and the nation’s education system.
