CASE STUDY: TechnipFMC
Approaching a Supercritical Fire Using Aspen HYSYS

Business Challenge & Objective Results & Benefits

The PSV Sizing Tool within Aspen HYSYS Provides:

Sizing a Pressure Safety Valve (PSV) in – Time savings. Up to 90% reduction in calculation hours.
Supercritical service involving phase change
– Accurately sized PSV’s using the rigorous approach.
during relief.
Results proven across a variety of systems and fluid
services.
Solution Overview – Once the base case has been set-up, it can be re-used
for subsequent systems, thus adding to the time saved!

External Fire Scenario
Workshop: External Fire Scenario
Analyze, size and document pressure relief devices directly in the simulation (Aspen HYSYS)

Target Vessel

External Fire Analysis
Available API 521 calculation methods for relief load calculations:

External Fire Analysis (Wetted API Calculation)
 This uses the following API equation for heat input from a fire
to a vessel containing liquids

where Q = 21000 × F × A 0.82

Q is the total heat absorption (input) to the wetted surface,

expressed in Btu/hr
F is an Environmental Factor
A is the wetted surface area in ft2
(Note “21000” changes to “34500” if adequate drainage and
firefighting equipment are not present)

 The relieving flow is calculated from the heat input and a

latent heat value for the liquid in the tank.
Flow = Duty / Latent Heat

Conclusions

 Calculated the relief load and corresponding orifice

size for a fire event
– Liquid and vapor in the vessel
– Single phase and super-critical vapor in vessel

 Understood worst case scenario, which will become

governing case for future design

Control Valve Failure
Control Value Failure

 Size for safety, but with CAPEX

in mind

 Inlet feed control valve failure

now considered in new design

Workshop: Control Valve Failure
 Override the reference stream and select the
stream into the valve

 Assemble the data needed for

the calculation

Control Valve Failure

This data
corresponds to the
stream into the valve

CV taken should be
copied from the valve

Mol Wt and
compressibility can
be found from
properties of the
stream into the valve

Multiple Relief Valve Analysis
 Choosing one valve configuration to satisfy all
scenarios can be a difficult process, because
selecting a valve that satisfies the contingency
with the largest required relieving load may
cause the same valve to chatter for the lower-
flowing scenarios

 Rate non-sizing scenarios with multiple valves

to predict chattering for certain scenarios and
better predict required sizes

 Sequence opening of multiple valves

Documentation and Reports

 The Safety Analysis Environment Documentation

Builder provides access to calculation
summaries, process data and industry-standard
(ISA) mechanical data sheets

 Functionality based on Microsoft Access

– Access must be installed
– Access .mdb files are saved with the .hsc file

 Offers more customization capability over built-in

HYSYS reports

 To avoid multiple files, save your HYSYS case as

a compound file (.hscz)

Conclusions
 Calculated the relief load and
corresponding orifice size for over
pressure event

 Understood routine case scenario

– for single and multiple valves

 Vendor documentation a vendor can use

 Maximized Safety while considering

CAPEX
