The beginning…
It is interesting to note that prepayment
metering in Nigeria actually started in the
then Islands District of Eko Electricity
Distribution Plc way back in 1997 with a
pilot scheme of about 2500 customers
covering Victoria Island and Ikoyi. In fact,
the first token ever vended was on July 28,
1997. The meters in use then were
CONLOG meters that made use of the
Magnetic Card strip as the token
technology.
Types of prepaid meters in EKEDC
Conlog was actually the first type of prepaid
meter to be installed in EKEDC way back in
1997. The deployment of Conlog meters
continued until 2006 when Actaris, Landis &
Gyr, Unistar and Holley came on board due
to the massive deployment of prepaid
meters that was required in line with the
National Pre-Paid Metering Programme that
was launched in 2006. Below is a list of all
meter types in EKEDC PPM network.

The prepaid meters scheme has over the
years grown in leaps and bounds but not
without challenges anyway. The analysis
below shows by meter type, how many
meters have been installed as well as the
growth rate in figures between 2007 and
2014. Also analyzed here is the PPM
population by business unit.
