Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood- Founder of MERCY Malaysia

(President 1999-2010)

She attended Assunta Girls School in Petaling Jaya. She then graduate as a Doctor of Medicine
(MD) from UKM in 1986 and earned her Master in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 1992. She
became a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist in the UK and
received training in various subspecialities of gynaecology in UK. She has also completed the
Program for Executive Development at the International Institute of Management and
Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

She started her career in KL General Hospital and was a lecturer in O&G at UKM untill 1995.
Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood also served as a research fellow at Tokyo University, and a fellow
of UK Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologiests in 2004. From 1995-1998, she served as
the Treasurer for the Malaysian Obstetrical & Gynaecological Organisation and as the Vice
President for Malaysian Menopause Organisation from 1999 – 2000. As of September 2009 she
was an obstetrician & gynaecologiest at Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital in KL.

In 2003, she was shot in her left hip during a MERCY mission in Badghad, Iraq. She was still
walking around with a bullet in her hip, five days after being shot thou doctors at Chiwader
hospital had wanted to remove the bullet. Eventually she removed the bullet from the hip and
sewed up the wound herself.

She was awarded Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di
Pertuan Agong in 2009 which carries the title Tan Sri. In 2013, she was awarded Isa Award for
Service to Humanity. In May 2014, Dr Jemilah was appointed to head the World Humanitarian
Summit Secretariat at the UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA)
headquarters in New York.

She is married to Dr Ashar Abdullah and has two sons.
