Operating/Maintenance Instructions

This sign was constructed as an Eagle Project for Tyler Colenbrander from Troop 73
and completed on 08/08/2018. No regular maintenance or inspection is required, but
these instructions outline the workings of the system if maintenance is necessary. If
problems arise please contact:

System Description:
The sign is 4 feet by 8 feet, made from a ½” thick acrylic material, held in place
by the 8 brackets located on the edges. It is set in a wooden frame made from pressure
treated 2x8s, held together by brackets at each corner and ¾” marine grade plywood on
the back. The sign frame is mounted on two 6x6 pressure treated posts, set 4 feet apart
and 4 feet into the ground. The topmost point of each post is about 8 feet off of the
ground and the sign itself is about 4 feet tall. These measurements can be found on the
schematic on page 3.
The solar panel is mounted on top with Unirac equipment and it is tilted about 16
degrees at a 185 degrees azimuth. The wires are fed through conduit running down the
back of the left post and down to the battery box on that post. Wires also extend from
the LED tape lights inside of the sign to the battery box, through conduit on the back of

the sign. The electrical components in the battery box can be seen in the schematic on
page 4.

Lighting Control:
The charge controller, in conjunction with the timer, controls the the lighting.
When initially constructed, the settings were as follows:

Charge Controller: Turn on load (LEDs) at sunset, Turn off at sunrise

Timer: Channel 1: Turn on at 4pm, Turn off at 11:45pm. Channel 2: Turn on at 5am,
Turn off at 8am.

When working together, these turn on the lights at sunset and they turn off at
11:45pm. They turn on again at 5am and off at sunset. These settings should not have
to be changed, but if necessary, to program the charge controller, instructions can be
found in the document at the following link:
http://support.morningstarcorp.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/SSMPPT.APP_.Lightin
g-Control.03.EN_1.pdf

If the link does not work, go to morningstarcorp.com and go to tech support, and
select the SunSaver MPPT. The Lighting Control document should be found in the Tech
Notes category. Note that you will also need the cable to connect the charge controller
to the computer. Contact one of the contacts listed above if you need the cable.
To program the timer, refer to the timer data sheet on page 15.
