Point 1
Rules for the Presentation

2
3 Speaking Assessment

The Rules to Get you Understand Things you are Going to Do and Deal:

On somewhere around May or June (any date available those

months), we will have a final speaking examination; you will be
asked to present any topic assigned to you (neither individually,
in pairs nor in group). So here are some stuffs you need to pay
attention to:

 The topic will be given to you a few days before the presentation day, so there is
actually no reason for you to say “I come unprepared” later on. If it is your turn
to perform and you give me some reason for being unprepared, just wish I’m
kind enough to spare another time for you.
 You must present your topic for at least three minutes (any shorter
presentation is highly unacceptable) and ten minutes is the maximum time
length; which include an introduction, development and a conclusion. To make
it clearer for you:
 Less than three minutes presentation: YOU’RE OUT!
 If your presentation is way too long: I’LL REMIND YOU!
 No introduction: YOU’RE OUT!
 No development: YOU’RE OUT!
 No conclusion: YOU’RE OUT!
 You must express your topic and support it with details. The details must
include: What is it? Why is it important? How is it done? and Exemplification.
 The most important thing you have to remember is if your presentation DOES
NOT REFLECT any improvement from your preceding presentation as how you
state it in your worksheet, dear… you DO NOT OWN A PASS from me. Kindly
take a remedial class!
 While you are doing your presentation, I and two random chosen students will
assess your performance.
 If it is your turn to be an assessor, you can say anything you want (either critics
or suggestion) related to the topic performed as it will help your with your score.
 Pass a copy of your “worksheet” to me (p: 11-19), your writing (about task in
page 21), and three copies of the “assessment sheet” for me and two other
randomly chosen assessors (p: 23).

DON’T FORGET! You must make sure that:

• your opinion is clearly stated;
• you have provided enough detail to support your opinion;
• your response is coherent (logical) and organized and;
• your fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and interactive communication
should be not too bad.

SAMPLE ORGANIZER
Topic: Should smoking be allowed in public places?
You can state your introduction by stating:
WHAT IS SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACES, or
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION? Choose YES or NO or BOTH or ALL OF THEM.
Take a stance!
Example:
STATE IT! Smoking in public places is an activity bad people do in crowded places to disserve
Introducing part not only themselves but also others.
or
I believe that smoking should not be allowed in public places.
or
Smoking in public places is an activity bad people do in crowded places to disserve
not only themselves but also others. Therefore, I believe that smoking should not
be allowed in public places.
Why do you believe this?
(Use your opinion ALONG with examples to support your points)
Point #1
Second-hand smoke is very dangerous and can cause cancer or other health
concerns.
Proof #1
PROVE IT! Second-hand smoke is just as dangerous as first-hand smoke. Waiters in smoking
Development/body restaurants can get sick from the smoke even if they don't smoke themselves.
part Point #2
Public places should be clean for all to enjoy.
Proof #2
All people have the right to clean air in public places rather than just being nice to
a few smokers.
Point #3
(if you have more ideas)
Wrap it up!
(re-state your point of view and summarize your major points)
LEAVE IT!
Example:
Conclusion part
Smoking should be banned from public places so people don’t get any cancer and
the can enjoy clean places.

Now all you need to do is put this into spoken language.

Should smoking be allowed in public places?

No, smoking should not be allowed in public places. I

clearly. secondly, (*)public places should be clean for all to enjoy. Why
should everyone be affected because a few choose to smoke?
Smoking should not be allowed in public places because

reason that smoking should not be allowed in public places.
I also believe smoking should not be allowed in public
places because public places should be clean and free-of-smoke
for all to enjoy. I'm not against people smoking. I'm just against

Smoking should never be allowed in public places. People

Now all you have to do is present your

practice for it and give your best
performance. After checking your

written practice, don’t forget to pay
attention to your fluency;
pronunciation, and interaction too

Point 3
Personal Worksheet

9
10 Speaking Assessment

In this part of your personal worksheet, you have to make transcription out of your
three presentations, assess yourself, and state the things you need to improve
holistically from all of the presentations. This point 3 is the pages that you have to print
out and hand it to me. I will evaluate your final presentation and decide whether you
will pass the examination or not based on the worksheet you made.

1. Transcription
There are three pages of transcriptions (followed by self-assessment pages) as
you have three presentations so far. You have to write everything you say down
starting from the beginning up to the end, including every a a a, pauses,
Indonesian language, etc (literally everything). You have to write it just the way
it is. If you laugh in your recording, then you have to write that you laugh.
Example:
A: How are you?
B: I’m fine.
A: (long pause) a a a where do you live?
…………
or
Sumatra is a very beautiful island and and eerrmmm eh lupa ……
or
If I were a president, I will. Miss negara Bahasa Inggrisnya apa? Country (someone answering).
I will develop this country …..

2. Self-assessment
In this part of the assessment, you will assess your performance. There will be
part where I will ask you about opinion on your presentation, do you think it’s
good enough? Neither the answer is yes or no, you need to state your reason.
3. Reflection
In the reflection part, you have to be able to see your flaws and strength. You
have to keep your strength (improve it if you can), make a better improvement
from your flaws. I have to see this improvement on your final presentation. If I
do not see any improvement, you need to take a remedial session.

Point 3
Your Final Presentation Points

20
21 Speaking Assessment

Now you have to sum up your whole three presentations. The freedom to present the way you
want to express it is all up to you. You can put your summary neither in chart nor lines, or you
can put not only the lines but also the chart. This part basically consists of TWO EXTREMELY
GRAVE ELEMENTS: THE THING(S) YOU HAVE TO LEAVE BEHIND, and THE THINGS YOU
HAVE TO KEEP THEM UP AND IMPROVE (if possible, but I am pretty sure it is “possible”).

Again, I need to remind you: if I do not see any IMPROVEMENT, you do NOT own a PASS .
Show some improvement and we are cool. It is as simple as that .
Note: Don’t forget to add a line about: out of three of your presentations, which one if my
favorite and why?

REMEMBER THESE TWO THINGS

YOUR FLAWS

YOUR STRENGTH

LEAVE IT!!!!

KEEP AND IMPROVE IT!!!!
