FMMS 6th Grade Science Information

Dear 6th Grade Science Parents,

Welcome to 6th grade science! We are excited about this year. Below is some general
information that you need to be aware of for your student to be successful in science this year.
We will be using the Discovery Education Techbook, which your student will also have access to
from home. Please familiarize yourself with the following information so that we can work
together for a successful year.

REQUIRED MATERIALS
4 Marble Composition Notebooks (1 per unit)
Sharpened #2 pencil
Agenda
Headphones (necessary for individual and station work)
1 Homework Folder
Colored Pencils
Scotch Tape
Index Cards

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Be on-time and prepared.
Follow ALL directions for safety.
Be recognized before speaking.
Respect others.
Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
Make today count…be a “yellow jacket”!

TECHNOLOGY & LAB SAFETY EXPECTATIONS


The Discovery Techbook is our middle school science textbook in the district. The students will
work on Chromebooks throughout the year to access its resources. Internet access privileges,
usage rules, and procedures will be followed as outlined in the student handbook (pgs. 20, 21, 9,
10, 12, especially). Teachers reserve the right to take away technology and lab privileges to
maintain a safe and positive learning environment for all students.

GRADES
Tests will be given upon completion or midway point of a science unit. Students may get extra
help during A+ or during lunch when requested. Grades will be calculated by the following:

•Classwork & Quizzes = 45%


•Unit Tests, Projects, & SLO tasks = 45%
•Nine Weeks Tests= 10%

GRADING SCALE
A 100-90
B 89-80
C 79-70
D 69-60
F 59 – 0

HOMEWORK & CLASSWORK


Assignments, quizzes, and test dates will be posted on each science teacher’s
webpage. Homework assignments may be graded for completion or accuracy. Any homework
assignments not completed will count as a 0. Late homework will be addressed at teacher’s
discretion. Other assignments may be assigned and graded as needed (ex: notebook checks,
worksheets, reading, study guides, review packets, etc).

Science Procedures
ENTRY PROCEDURES
1) Put your bookbags on the back of your chair.
2) Get out a sharpened pencil and your unit notebook BEFORE the bell rings.

PENCIL SHARPENING PROCEDURES


1) Only sharpen pencils before the bell rings or during independent work.

EXTRA TIME EXPECTATIONS


1) When you have finished the completed assigned work with your personal best effort, you
are required to do one the following activities…
Work on science homework.
Study your unit notebook or flashcards.
Read a science book.
Complete a brain teaser.
Look at a Study Jams video and make your own quiz.
Quiz a partner.
Complete any assigned Discovery Education or Google activities.
Work on Genius Hour projects (when assigned).

DIRECT INSTRUCTION PROCEDURES


1) Listen to your teacher with your ears and eyes.
2) Ask at least 2-3 questions a week.

TURNING IN ASSIGNMENTS PROCEDURE


1) I will take up all papers at the same time during class or as an “exit pass”.

TEAMWORK PROCEDURES
1) NO put-downs!
2) Encourage your classmates.
3) Share ideas with one another.
4) Ask for what you need.
5) Help each other.
6) Compromise and “take turns” when appropriate.

DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
1) Record all assignments from board.
2) Clean up your table and wait for your table to be called.
3) Line up in a straight, single file line on the side of the counter closest to the whiteboard.
