ARCHITECTURAL LAYOUT
Influenced by Bauhaus design and color theories, the space will boast of bold shades of triadic
colors (red, blue, and yellow) with repetition of strong contrasts of light and dark, emphasizing
the asymmetry and fluidity throughout the space and creating a harmonious balance of color
and light. Focusing more on functionality and flexibility to better accommodate Mr. Neymar’s
occupational and social pursuits, the open concept space will feature a variety of built-in
cabinets, counters, and storage areas with the intention of upholding a rhythmically simple and
uncluttered space. Furnishings will emphasize form and function while also unveiling a
visually-stimulating and industrial aesthetic. Lack of ornamentation in the space will also
allow Mr. Neymar ample space to display his personal effects while also accentuating the
historic architectural elements of the present construction such as the repetitious grid patterns
of windows or the varying angular or vertical lines, unifying the building as a whole and
creating an inspiring place to work and entertain.

INTA 212 P01 | Residential Design I
August 17, 2018
Reflection & Justification
There was much to learn during this session, and I’m eager to continue refining my skills in each individual
aspect. Sketching is something that I’ve never been quite comfortable with, but this course continued to push
me passed my comfort zone and I’ve never been any prouder of the sketches that I had produced during this
session. I had also never rendered an image before this point and I’m excited to see how far my repeated
practice takes me in the future. During this session, I struggled financially and could not manage to afford
materials that I needed, and it truly hindered the completion of my course project, but I’m extremely satisfied
with how it turned out despite the circumstances. I feel that this was great practice, but there are plenty of
things that I would change if I simply had more time, which is probably another hindrance that designers deal
with daily. Trying to meet deadlines is something we, designers, will have to deal with every day, and it was
great to see how realistically difficult bringing everything together was. I can’t imagine myself doing the work
that interior designers do, but it was a great experience to hypothetically act as an interior designer for this
session as it gave me invaluable insight I would not have recognized otherwise. Space planning was a
significant portion of this project, and while I feel that the layout could have been improved, I believe that with
more experience, I can only get better! Having a basic understanding of ADA compliancy and clearances is
one of the most important things I have learned about throughout my educational career and is something that I
hope to learn more about in the future. Developing this project simply began with my client’s Bauhaus Design
preference; learning about Bauhaus Design was something I enjoyed in my History of Architecture class and
getting the opportunity to choose furnishings and accessories for my client was the most exciting part!
Influenced by Bauhaus design and color theories, the color scheme chosen features bold shades of the typical
Bauhaus triadic colors (red, blue, and yellow) with repetition of strong contrasts of light and dark. Because my
client is a single male, I felt that the color choices were the perfect balance between bold and masculine. The
furnishings also boast of my client’s Bauhaus design preference, which is boldly incorporated into the design
with the aluminum tapered legs featured on the sofas, side tables and the practical spatial planning throughout.
Bright and bold textiles were chosen to better contrast the darker wood tones featured in the coffee and side
tables in the living area, and sheer drapes were selected to enhance the amount of natural light coming from the
windows. The textiles chosen are made from durable materials that are easier to maintain and are capable of
withstanding normal wear- and-tear. As for the accessories chosen, because Bauhaus Style typically
incorporates minimal ornamentation, I decided to choose simple, yet, abstract geometric selections to display
and accentuate the airiness of the overall space. The reputable Bauhaus table lamp based on the Wilhelm
Wagenfeld and Carl Jakob Jucker design from 1923-24, and printed canvas by Piet Mondrian are two
selections chosen for the home office that truly demonstrate the use of clean lines and geometrical elements
typically featured in Bauhaus design, and serve as wonderful conversational pieces. Light plays a huge role in
creating the inviting space my client, Eric Neymar desires which is why the accent tree floor lamp and
complementing metal orb sculpture selected for the living room is the perfect balance of light and space; The
airiness of the metal orb sculpture allows for ample light to pass through and complement the dark wood tones
featured in the furnishings. The main objective when choosing these selections was to avoid clutter while also
enhancing the overall functionality by adding additional task and accent lighting. I’m quite proud of the
progress we’ve all made in this course and I’m excited to see what’s in store for our future.
