45) Which of the following relations on the set {1,2,3,4} is

equivalent relations ? Find the properties of an equivalent
relations that the others lack.
(a) { (2,4), (4,2) }
(b) { (1,1), (2,2), (3,3),(4,4) }
(c) { (2,2), (2,3), (2,4), (3,2), (3,3), (3,4) }
Answer:
(a) { (2,4), (4,2) }

(x, y) R
(2, 4), (4, 2)

(2, 4) R
2-4=-2/2=-1
(4,2) R
4-2=2/2=1
This is a symmetric equivalent relation.
i) This is not an equivalent relation because, it satisfies
only the symmetric condition.
ii) This does not satisfies the reflexive condition and
transverse condition.

(b) { (1,1), (2,2), (3,3),(4,4) }

This is an equivalent relation.

i)This equation satisfies all the three conditions of the

equivalent relation…
ii)Here { (1,1), (2,2), (3,3),(4,4) } ,all the elements has
their own reflexive elements…that is “set of all subset of
itself”, hence it satisfies the reflexive condition.
iii)It’s also a symmetric condition also, as here { (1,1),
(2,2), (3,3),(4,4) }all the elements were able to satisfies
the condition a b &b a. Thus it is a symmetric
relation.
iv)This set satisfies the transverse condition also.

(c) { (2,2), (2,3), (2,4), (3,2), (3,3), (3,4) }

This is not a equivalent relation.

i)As it does not satisfies the reflexive condition itself.
