Parameter A2 also known as represents the probability of corrosion
damage being due to chemical attack. Chemical Attack Class I Index refers to low and medium
aggressiveness. Refer to ACI 201.2R08. Concrete Alkalinity can be measured according to ASTM F710.
Typical field measuring methods include: digital devices, pencil and sticker type rainbow indicators.
Identification of the chemical responsible for the attack it is an important parameter, signifying damage rate
and potential additional harmful effects, i.e. disintegration of concrete, gypsum expansion, etc. Typical
chemicals and their effects are depicted below (ACI 5151R).
In all cases it is imperative that tensile test on representative reinforcement is performed
according to ASTM A 370. Chemical analysis of concrete is also recommended. Note that certain
chemicals might further decrease pH with exposure time.
Prior to any measurement, it is important to properly clean the concrete sample with running water to
prevent dust from the coring process to affect the measurement. The core prior to testing shall be allowed to
dry for at least 15 minutes.
Measurement of concrete cover is performed via the use of covermeters as shown in previous section. In
case of cracked concrete and independently to crack width, severity class 4 shall be selected.
