1. INTRODUCTION:-
Transportation is one of the most important requirements for the aid of
communication from one place to other for visiting purpose or in the sense of
tourism and for communication between places etc. Transportation system
improves the social, economic, industrial and commercial progress and further
transforms the society into an organized one.

It is one of the essential services, vital force for determining the direction of
development.

 Bus terminal
A bus terminus is a designated place where a bus or coach starts or ends its
scheduled route. The terminus is the designated place that a timetable is
timed form. Terminus can be located at bus stations, interchanges, bus
garages or simple stops. Terminus can both start and stop at the same place,
or may be in different locations for starting and finishing a route.

Circulation is an important factor in designing of bus terminus as free flowing

movement of pedestrian, normal vehicles and buses is required to avoid any
type congestion.
In this dissertation I have tried to explore different types of circulation pattern
and the factors which depend on the circulation.

 Scale of terminal
It depend on the vehicular movement scale within that city and also on the
size of the city
e.g. Patna is the capital city of Bihar and there is a bulk of interstate buses,
approx. 3000 buses are served on the daily basis so due to this busiest
schedule of buses it comes under cities having large scale traffic movement,
so there would be need for systematic bus terminal having appropriate area.

 Needs for a terminal

Terminals act as access nodes.

Increasing urbanization is putting pressure on infrastructure in cities around

the globe. In the developed world, competition for space to serve the
transport needs of city centers is increasing, at the same time as governments
are investing in more sustainable transport modes, such as walking, cycling
and public transport modes like light rail and bus rapid transit.

i.e. Bihar CM lays foundation stone for Rs 361 crore inter-state bus terminal in
Patna.
The swanky bus terminal will come up at 26-acre plot of Patna Municipal
Corporation in Pahari area, situated at the outskirt of the state capital on the
Patna-Gaya road.

In the developing world, increases in vehicle ownership are leading to

worsening traffic congestion and declining mode share for sustainable
transport modes.

In many cities, particularly smaller ones, buses will continue to perform a

critical role in supporting the economic and social life of the city.

 Why Bus terminal

Transportation planning is a field involved with the evolution, design and

sitting of transportation facilities (generally streets, highways, footpaths, bike
lanes and public transport lines and it also linked with green spaces).

This project gives me an opportunity for transportation planning which I wish

to pursue further in my masters in architecture and planning.

2. PROJECT DETAILS-

The rapid urbanization of Patna, has triggered increasing mobility, high travel
demand, increasing congestion, delays, accidents etc. and an appropriate
sustainable transport system is required to overcome the aforesaid issues.
Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (BUIDCO) has
proposed to develop modern Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Mauza-Pahari,
Dist.-Patna.
The New ISBT will replace the current Bus Stop located at Mithapur.
Due to the following reasons or regularly facing problems, Mithapur is shifted:

 Project site justification

Mithapur Bus stand, the only bus depot in Patna, is in dismal condition. It
located 2 km from Patna junction, does not have any proper facilities. In
such condition not only passengers, but the staff and employees at the bus
stand also suffering.

There is lot garbage all around and it is sinking and there is problem of

leakage, due to these thousands of litre of water has got wastage
regularly.

The locality is an education hub with campuses of five elite institutions

located in a 1-km stretch. National Institute of Fashion Technology, Chanakya
National Law University and Chandragupta Institute of Management, Patna,
already operate from here while the Aryabhatta Knowledge University and the
Patna centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University will come up.

But that same 1-km stretch is paralyzed most days because of private bus
owners parking their vehicles in front of the institutions.

Nearly 3000 bus are served on the daily basis, and at the bus stand there is
not enough space for serving and parking all buses.

This competition among the bus operators leads to the entire road being
blocked with long queues on both sides.

So this new ISBT will replace the current Bus Depot at Mithapur.

3. AIM:-

To achieve design excellence and come up with a prototype design for Bus
Terminal.

4. OBJECTIVES:-

- To study and create different types of circulation within the building.

- To analyze entry and exit point of the vehicles.
- To create clear segregation of parking facilities.
- To study about the free flowing movement of vehicles, buses and pedestrian
movement.
- To promote optimum connections between all elements and spaces, i.e. clear
connection of functions.

5. SCOPE:-

- Orientation of the terminal building which will depend on the movement

of buses.
- Framing requirements for max. nos. of passengers per day in both
directions.
- Bus Parking Bays
- Circulation Pattern – Pattern Flow of Passengers and Buses.
- Commercial Spaces
- Idle Parking of Buses, Cars, Auto & Taxis
- Administrative Offices
- Local shops
- Entry & Exit for Interstate Buses and Local Buses
- And also Entry & Exit for private vehicles & Autos
- Designing various green spaces and
- Pedestrian Pathways.

8. SITE DATA

 GEOGRAPHICAL SETTING OF PATNA:

The city of Patna is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world
with the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) extending between the Latitude:
25°33'22''- 25°39'2'' North and Longitude: 85°31'12''- 85°15'5'' East, (Ashraf,
2014:16783).

The city situated on the Southern banks of holy river Ganga is at an altitude
of 53 above sea level.

Patna is located at the confluence of rivers- River Ganga from the east,
Punpun from the north and Sone from the south.

The city of Patna lies on the National Highway (NH) No. 30, which runs from Mohania to
Bakhtiarpur within the state of Bihar. NH 30 is an important link road for it connects Delhi to
Assam via-NH 2 (Delhi- Kolkata) and NH 31 (Barhi- Jalukbari).

The road bridge (Mahatma Gandhi Setu) across the river Ganga connects Patna with the places of
North Bihar Plain.

 DEMOGRAPHIC ATTRIBUTES OF PATNA :

Patna, the administrative capital of Bihar is the most populous city of the state with
a population size of 17, 71,140 according to the 2011 census figures.

 TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION:

An efficient transportation system is a prerequisite for the proper growth and

functioning of the city.

Today it is the principal administrative, industrial and educational center of

Bihar. Being the state capital, Patna is well connected with the rest of India
and also with the different districts within the state of Bihar. The most
common modes of transport within the city are via taxis, autos and buses. It is
connected with the other cities through air, road and also via waterways.

 Road Network in Patna:

Being an important administrative and educational centre, Patna has an

extensive road network which is well connected with the local and national
highways. National Highways 19, 30, 31 and 83 passes through the city
connecting it to North East, Mumbai and Delhi.

Patna is nearly 100 Km. away from the National East-West expressway and
over 100 Km from the Agra-Kolkata expressway (NH2).
