Reading Curriculum

Grade Level : Five (5) No. of Hours per Week : Four (4)

Subject Description
The standards establish a “staircase” of increasing complexity in what students must be able to read. The standards also require the
progressive development of reading comprehension. Through reading a diverse array of literature as well as challenging informational
texts in a range of subjects, students are expected to build knowledge, gain insight, explore possibilities, and broaden their
perspective.

Foundational Skills
 Phonics and Word Recognition
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to
read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.
 Fluency
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding
Read grade-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
