SECTION-B
Answer THREE questions (3×20=60)
All questions carry equal marks

11. a) A firm manufactures headache pills in two sizes A and B. Size A contains 2 grains of
aspirin, 5 grains of bicarbonate and 1 grain of codeine. Size B contains 1 grain of
aspirin, 8 grains of bicarbonate and 6 grains of codeine. It is found by users that it
requires atleast 12 grains of aspirin, 74 grains of bicarbonate and 24 grains of codeine
for providing immediate effect. It is required to determine the least number of pills a
patient should take to get immediate relief. Formulate the problem as a standard LPP.
b) Using graph, find the maximum value of z=10x1+6x2 subject to the constraints:
5x1+3x2  30; x1+2x2 18 and x1, x20.
-2-

12. a) Use simplex method to maximize z=5x1+3x2 subject to the constraints:

x1+x22; 5x1+2x210; 3x1+8x212; x1, x20

b) Use dual simplex method to solve the following LPP:

Minimize z=3x1+x2 subject to the constrains: x1+x21; 2x1+3x22; x1, x20

13. a) Find the starting solution in the following transportation problem by Vogel’s
approximation method. Also obtain the optimum solution:
D1 D2 D3 D4 Supply
S1 3 7 6 4 5
S2 2 4 3 2 2
S3 4 3 8 5 3
Demand 3 3 2 2

b) Solve the following assignment problem:

14. a) Discuss the various factors affecting inventory system.

b) Find the optimum order quantity for a product for which the price breaks are as
follows:
Quantity unit cost (Rs.)
0  Q1<800 Re.1.00
800  Q2 Re.0.98
The yearly demand for the product is 1600 units per year, cost of placing an order is
Rs.5, the cost of storage is 10% per year.

15. a) Let the value of money be assumed to be 10% per year and suppose that machine A is
replaced after every 3 years whereas machine B is replaced after every six years. The
yearly costs of both the machines are given below:
Year : 1 2 3 4 5 6
Machine A : 1000 200 400 1000 200 400
Machine B : 1700 100 200 300 400 500
Determine which machine should be purchased

ii) Instantaneous failure rate
iii) Estimation of reliability
