I.

Purpose

We are here to present our calculation as a justification on the propose location of Tower
Crane at Filter Area of La Mesa Water Treatment Plant 1. This calculation covers the 100 mm
PVC pipe 2.5 m below the crane pad.

II. PVC Pipe Properties

We assume that the existing pipe properties has the following general standards for uPVC
pipes:

III. Analysis and Calculation

Illustration:
The location is subject for an increment of soil stress upon installing the tower crane as
shown in the figure below.
 B=6m
 L=6m
 Q = 1422.45 kN (145T Crane Weight)
 Z = 2.5 m (location of pipe from soil surface)

Applying 2:1 method of analysis we have:

2 2.5
 1
= 𝑥
 x = 1.25 m
 L’ = 6 + 1.25 + 1.25 = 8.5 m
 P/𝐿′2 = 1422.45 x 1000 / 8.52 = 19.68 kPa (stress on pipe Location)

Bending on Pipes

Bending occur when the soil settle due to the weight of crane that will cost the pipe to bend see figure.

Bending cause by settlement on soil due to loading

 W = 19.68 x 0.1 = 1.97 kN/m

 L = 1m (effective length of pipe)
 M = WL^2 / 8 = (1.97 x 1^2)/ 8 = 0.246 kN-m
 C = 50 mm
 R =100 mm
 r = 93.6 mm
𝜋 ( 𝑅4 − 𝑟4 )
 I= 4
= 18257035.74
𝑀𝐶 0.246 𝑥 50 𝑥 1000^2
 Fb = = = 0.67 MPa (bending stress on pipe)
𝐼 18257035.74
 Pipe Bending Capacity = 40MPa (5700 Psi) see general properties
 0.67 MPa (actual bending stress on Pipe) < 40 MPa (Bending Capacity of Pipe) safe!
