The first meeting with the adviser. This day was merely a planning and brainstorming of
the thesis like the topic and main problem that needs to be solved. Our adviser has decided to give
us the topic regarding Aquaponics System that will be integrated with IoT principle. We discussed
also to what will be the new feature of our planned project as opposed to the existing Aquaponics
IoT system. With careful deliberation among the group and with our adviser, we have come up
with a feature for aquaponics system that is situated inside the house like in the kitchen and so on.
In addition, our adviser wanted to us to create our own website and own android application. He
suggested also that in our project we won’t use any third party software application, this is to make
our project new compared to other project.

The second meeting with our thesis adviser. This day was the first presentation of the
statement of the problem and some parts of the plan like the deciding what will be the test subjects
to be used. We also report the grow light for our adviser to accept it as a possible idea for the
thesis. We discussed topics and presented a power point presentation regarding the topic. During
the reporting, everyone was listening sharply to the speaker, it was like already rehearsing for the
proposal. Questions and suggestions took part after the presentation. At the end of the reporting,
we talked about how we could make it happen and how could it be added on the research. After a
while we agreed to use LED Strip lights as grow light for the plants because of the advantages it
could give. We also planned on when we could start researching for more related studies about it.
Before we ended the meeting, our adviser assigned us to further study on the hardware and he
wants to see some progress next week.

The third meeting with our thesis adviser. This day we have presented the three-
dimensional design of the aquaponics system we will make, these includes the dimensions of the
grow bed, the aquarium, and the overall framework. The materials will be used in the project was
included in the presentation, and based from the researches made by our group, we have decided
to use lightweight but strong materials. Furthermore, our adviser told us this day to present an
outline of the review of related literature next meeting and the final listing of materials such as
sensors, glass, and acrylic that will be used in the project.

As we research more about our chosen topic, we also consider the microcontroller that we
will be using in the system. The previous study which was our guide used an ESP8266-12E
microcontroller – a Wi-Fi module that is capable of sending data to the internet. The downside of
the microcontroller used is that it has a small flash memory just around 512kb, which is not enough
if we’re going to have an Over-The-Air (OTA) update that requires at least 4mb. In addition, the
microcontroller is also difficult to configure because it requires to be supplied with an ample
amount of current and voltage. After our thorough research for a microcontroller that is capable of
handling the said requirements, we found out that a development board is available and is based
from ESP8266-12E Wi-Fi module. The NodeMCU devkit has a 4mb of flash memory and is
already equipped with a 3.3V regulator embedded on the board. It does not also requires to be
configured the same way with the previous microcontroller. Uploading a code is also very easy
compared to the ESP8266. However, we still have to explore its functions and capabilities before
we can completely conclude that the NodeMCU is a perfect microcontroller for our system.
Nevertheless, our adviser already approved that the NodeMCU development board is the
microcontroller that we will be using on our system.

This day we had a meeting with our adviser. The meeting took place at the LB560TC. We
met with our adviser 9 am because he still had another advisee to handle. On this day we made a
report on the grow light for our adviser to accept it as a possible idea for the thesis. We discussed
topics and presented a power point presentation regarding the topic. My groupmates also had their
own power point presentations. During the reporting, everyone was listening sharply to the
speaker, it was like already rehearsing for the proposal. Questions and suggestions took part after
