načrt in izvedbo nove tehnike ulivanja kipov, ustanovil grafični zavod. Neprecenljivi so
njegovi zapisi o življenju in navadah kmečkega prebivalstva v drugi polovici 17. stoletja na
Kranjskem.
vzdrževal nekaj let bakrorezce in tiskarje.«
živeli vse do izida Slave vojvodine Kranjske.
stare in sodobne nadvojvodine Koroške – Topographia Archiducatus Carinthiae antiquaeet

Zbirka obsega grafike, risbe in akvarele -
znanih in neznanih - nemških, avstrijskih, nizozemskih, flamskih, francoskih, italijanskih, an-
Lucas Cranach, Rembrandt van Rijn in Jacques Callot.
Valvasorjeve grafične zbirke z imenom Iconotheca Valvasoriana, in dr.
2014, logično nadaljevanje teh zgodovinskih dejstev in posledica ciklusa grafičnih razstav
Razstavljali
so Bogdan Borčić, Tinca Stegovec, Karel Zelenko, Vladimir Makuc, Hamo Čavrk, Janko
nika z bogatim grafičnim opusom in prepoznavno avtorsko poetiko. Poleg bogatega znanja
Slovenije.
Celoletni projekt danes povezuje cikel razstav Iz zakladnice slovenske grafike, pedagoške

Valvasorjevi
mednarodni grafični dnevi, ki bodo to leto med grajske zidove zopet prinesli ustvarjalni nemir
in vonj po tiskarski barvi.

VALVASORJEVI INTERNATIONAL GRAPHIC DAYS IN THE CITY OF BOGENSPERK,
Slovenia
Johann WeikhardValvasor (1641 – 1639) was a Slovenian nobleman, scientist and natural
historian who spent twenty of the most creative years of his life (from 1672 – till 1692) at the
Bogenschpek Castle in Slovenia. In the days of his creativity he published his encyclopedic
work under the title “The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola (original title: Die EhredeßHer-
zogthumsCrain,Slovene: SlavavojvodineKranjske, 1689)”, a few topographical works, pre-
pared a plan for the passage of Ljubelj, implemented a new technique for statue molding,
and also founded the Graphic institute. His notes that referred to the life and customs of the
rural population in the second half of the 17thcentury in Carniola (Kranjsko) are considered
as invaluable. Due to his research of the specific Lake of Cerknica, Valvasor became a
member of the Royal Society in London (1687), and the Bogenschpek Castle thanks to the
great work of Vlvasor, got the title of center of knowledge, research and creativity in Carniola
and wider.
The day when Valvasor founded the Graphic art institute in the Bogenschpek Castle,
together with the engraving workshop and printing work shop, 12th April 1678, is considered
as the birthday of the Slovenian graphic art. The foundation of the Graphic Art Institute rep-
resents the beginning of the first major chapter in Slovenian graphic art, and was the first of
its king on Slovenian soil. Johann WeikhardValvasor marked this highly important moment
with the following words:
“ I was also – without boosting – the first one who brought in this famous Duchy of
Carniola in 1678, the first workshop of this kind and in this castle (Bogenschpek Castle ) for
several years I engaged in the printing of engraved works. “
The Valvasor’s graphic workshop was created for one sole reason. At the time in the
Duchy of Carniola, there was no printing house nor printing press, where Valvasor could
realize his plans and topographical works with which he wanted to bring Carniola area to the
world. Valvasor worked side by side with the printers, he organized and realized the daily
workin the printing workshop, and also worked as a designer. He was surrounded by print-
ers, engravers, domestic, German and Dutch masters, who under his leadership printed the
necessary paintings, exclusively at his expense; he also lived, constantly, exclusively at his
own expense, in order to celebrate the Duchy of Carniola. As a result, all copper prints that
were made in the graphic institute, Valvasor inserted into his books. Most of them represent
the perfection of topographic painting, which was then widespread in the German lands.
During the 11 years of work at the graphic Institute in Bogenschpek, 3 geographic maps
9

were created, 7 of Valvasor books were published, of which in three, Valvasor, creates ar-
tistic graphic works, while in the last two he works on the Topography of the old and modern
Carinthian archduchy – “TopographiaarchiducatusCarinthiaeantiquae et modernaecomple-
ta (1688)”, as, glory of the Carniolaarchduchy – “Die Ehre des HerzogthumsKrain (1689)”
which were later printed in Nuremberg.
When processing Valvasor’sgraphic interests and engagements, we should take into
account his extraordinary collection of graphics (over 8000), which Valvasor enriched, buy-
ing graphics from Europe, so in 1685, he thematically arranges them and connects them
to 18 volumes of large format. The Valvasar’s collection is consisted of prints, drawings
and aquarelles by well known and unknown artists from, Germany, Austria, Netherlands,
and Flanders. The collection is also enriched with French, English and Crannies masters
of the 15th, 16th and 17th century, such as, for example, Albrecht Durer, Lucas Cranach,
Rembrandt Van Rijn, and Jacques Callot. During the time this collection was part of his ex-
traordinary library in Bogenschpek Castle, but today the collection is kept in the library of
the Zagreb Mitropoly. In 2008, under the leadership of Valvasar’s Foundation, SASA (The
Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts) published a facsimile of Valvasar’s collection by
the name “IconothecaValvasorina”, et al. Gostich, the editor of this inclusive project had the
honor to hand the first copy of this collection to the Bogenschpek Castle, which today is
preserved in Valvasor’s working room. With the collapse of the graphic workshop and the
sale of the library and graphic collection in Zagreb, the rich graphic artistic activity ended
inBogenschpek.
The Valvasor InternationalGraphic Dayswere held after 325 years, in 2014 in the Bo-
genschpekCastle. As a logical continuation of this historical facts is considered the cycle of
graphic exhibitions of famous artists, which were placed in the gallery of the Bogenschpek
Castle. Many artists were included in these exhibitions; works of BogdanBorčić, TincaStegov-
ec, KarelZelenko, Vladimir Makuc, HamoCavrak, JankoOrach, etc. were exhibited. Also, at
the meeting with Mr. Orach, who has many years of experience with the management and
organization of various art colonies, it was decided the national institution Bogenschpekin
cooperation with the above artist, the BozidarJakac Gallery at KostanjevicanaKrkiand the
Technical Museum of Slovenia, to be founded The Valvasor InternationalGraphic Days, a
project that re-animates graphic art in classical graphic techniques at Valvasor’s Castle. In
order to ensure the highest possible level of expertise and sustainability at these Valvasor’s
graphic days, we have created an artistic council in which members are the representatives
of these institutions and as well with the title of an artistic director - the graphic artist Jan-
koOrach. When selecting authors, the art council follows the principle of inviting artists with
10

rich graphic opus and recognizable authorial poetics. In addition to extensive knowledge that
is important for the Commission, it is also important to achieve a generational mix of artists,
and that in their artistic expression a variety of graphic techniques for the purpose is used,
simply said, a variety of creative art making and using of a variety of graphic techniques. So
far, artists from Croatia, Macedonia, Italy, Serbia and Slovenia have been present.
The multi-annual project, today is already marked with the cycle of exhibitions from
the Slovene Graphics Treasury, educational workshops on graphics, the art work of six invit-
ed artists in classical graphic techniques within the five-day graphic workshop and the Sep-
tember exhibition, featuring works created within the graphical workshop. The exhibitions
also feature a high-quality graphic collection, which remains as an art collection in the castle.
The director and curator of the BozidarJakac Gallery at KostanjevicanaKrki- Goran
Milanovic, also an expert on The Valvasor InternationalGraphic Days, at the first exhibition
wrote the following:
“The realization of The Valvasor InternationalGraphic Dayswithout any reservation
can be described as a successful attempt to popularize and consolidate the graphic medium
in public, as well as a successful symposium for socializing and sharing author’s creations
and conceptswhich in today’s exaggerated individualization and orientation are usually only
in personal well-being, is not only more than a useful creative moment, but rather a solid
basis for the creation of the graphic collection of the Bogenschpek Castle, which is supple-
mented with the names of six authors who possess a recognizable and well-established au-
thorial poetics. This well-organized concept, without any doubt, is an important contribution
for educating and enrichment of the local and wider cultural space”.
As the time passes, we can say that there are already four years of graphic creations
behind us, and before us is the 5th anniversary of TheValvasorInternationalGraphic Days
which will again cause creative turmoil and will awake the smell of the printing color through
the Castle of Valvasor.

Clay Yi-Hsiang Chen, project coordinator
Printmaking is one of the traditional art forms in Taiwan. Introduced to Taiwan from Mainland China as our
forefathers crossed the strait to settle on the island since the end of Ming dynasty, it is known as “folklore print”
that has been passed down in the society. It was not until the 1940s that printmaking techniques were adopted
and utilized by artists. Since then, modern printmaking has been widely promoted in Taiwan, and attracted the
attention of all sectors. In 1983, the Council for Cultural Affairs (now Ministry of Culture), Executive Yuan,
launched the “International Biennial Print Exhibit R.O.C.,” opening a new chapter for the promotion of print-
making. Entering the 21st century, the development of digital technology not only has enriched the expressions
of printmaking, but also redefined the conceptof printmaking.
This paper aims to explain and introduce the development of modern printmaking in Taiwan after WWII,
hoping it could help viewers to learn and understand this part of the history.
I. The Budding and Growth of Modern Printmaking under the Western Influences
From 1945 to 1949, many woodcut printmakers came over to Taiwan from the Mainland and set the tone for
earlyTaiwanese printmaking with local artists, making this time the period of emergence of printmaking.
Impacted by Western modernist thoughts and American abstract expressionist artists in the 1950s, local Tai-
wanese artists were intrigued to create abstract art. The trend was even more influential to printmaking, es-
pecially with the organization of “Prints of Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes” (1954) and “American Prints
Special Exhibition” (1957) by the National Museum of History, introducing the public for the first time to the
beauty of rich layers of intaglio etching. To the Taiwanese printmaking community that had long focused on
woodcut, it was a tremendous visual and conceptual impact. In 1958, “Modern Printmaking Association” was
founded, with members including Chin Sung, Yang Ying-fong, Chiang Han-tung, Chen Ting-shih, Shih Hua,
and Lee Shi-chi.The association’s purpose was to “to escape from the old classical realist style and political
shackles of traditional woodcut, and add modernity into methods and contents, establishing original and inde-
pendent artistic format for printmaking.” The association took the concept of modern printmaking in Taiwan
into the next stage.
Taiwanese printmaking began with “Modern Printmaking Association,” whichemphasized individual style and
content; the members had never received comprehensive training on printmaking and production techniques,
therefore, in terms of expression, the association still mainly featured woodcut prints with abstract style. The
members participated in various international print exhibitions, such as Sao Paolo Biennial in Brazil, Interna-
28
2018
tional Young Artists Competition in Tokyo, and Asian Print Exhibition in Philippines, and frequently won ma-
jor prizes, which injected much confidence to the art community in Taiwan at the time, and made printmaking
the first art form to enter the global spotlight ahead of all the others.
During this period, in addition to “experiment of new materials” and “wave of abstract style,” modern print-
making in Taiwan also had another important development and feature—the publication of “research books.”
Besides introducing the “technical” aspect, some of these books were catalogues of woodcuts or even collec-
tions of essays.
II. Introduction of New Techniques and Concepts and Promotion of Modern Printmaking
In 1966, artist Liao Shiou-ping, who lived abroad in France, came back to Taiwan and held solo exhibition
at Taiwan Provincial Museum (now National Taiwan Museum), which featured dozens of etching prints that
displayed oriental style and sentiments, and works that showcased the technique of multilevel printing. These
works introduced art professionals in Taiwan to the modern printmaking method of intaglio color printing. In
1971, Hsieh Li-fa brought the techniques of silk-screen printing and integration of photography and printmak-
ing to Taipei, stimulating domestic young artists’ interest in and longing for creating modern prints.
In 1966, the government launched the “Chinese Cultural Renaissance”. A group of print enthusiasts, including
Fang Hsiang and Chou Ying, gathered 52 artists of different generations and established the “Printmaking
Society of Taiwan R.O.C.” in 1970, with the objective of “engaging in printmaking and researching printmak-
ing theories,” which made the printmaking movement more organized; for example, the society held national
print exhibitions and international exchange exhibitions at various venues in Taiwan. They also helped local
social education institutions, private enterprises, and organizations to organize print exhibitions. The society
therefore became the leading national printmaking organization, and left great impact on the development of
printmaking in Taiwan.
In 1973, Liao Shiou-ping was employed by alma mater National Taiwan Normal University and returned to
Taiwan; he taught modern printmaking at National Taiwan Normal University, Chinese Culture University, and
National Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). He introduced new international modern
printmaking concepts, knowledge and techniques, such as silk-screen printing, photoengraving, and lithogra-
phy, which utilized photography and technology as aids for printmaking. Liao established printmaking studios
on Jinan Road, Xinyi Road, and Xinsheng South Road in Taipei, where he instructed a number of printmaking
artists on how to create prints. Liao also proactively toured everywhere to organize printmaking demonstra-
tions and give speeches, launching a wave of “printmaking fever” in Taiwan.
In 1974, ten of Liao’s students at National Taiwan Normal University, including Tung Cheng-ping, Chung
You-hui, Lin Chang-de, Lin Hsueh-ching, TzengShai-shu, Hsieh Hong-da, Le Yi-ping, Tsui Yu-liang, Huang
Kuo-chuan, and Ho Li-jung, formed the “Evergreen Graphic Art Association,” and systematically organized
annual exhibitions and printmaking promotion events, bringing more attention onto printmaking from the
society than ever before.

At the same time, in terms of creative ideas, emphasis was put on local forms and contents, which was more
or less influenced by the Nativist Movement at the time. Under such propositions, artists who mainly created
woodcuts all turned their attention to local and folklore topics for inspirations. Some works were deeply influ-
enced by calligraphy or oracle bones script, while some sought creative nutrients in other art forms, such as Han
stone engraving, traditional Chinese New Year woodblock prints, Buddhist art, or indigenous woodcarving.
In the 1970s, the spread of art information was rapid, and there was an influx of printmaking related books.
“Lion Art Magazine” and “Artist Magazine” were both founded during this time, and both reserved columns
for in-depth introduction on printmaking; through pictures and texts, these publications further drove the
development of Taiwanese modern printmaking.
III. The Impact of International Biennial Print Exhibit R.O.C. on Modern Printmaking
Taiwan’s economic development peaked in the 1980s. The establishment of municipal cultural centers, the three
major art museums, and especially the foundation of Council for Cultural Affairs under Executive Yuan in No-
vember 1981, manifested the results of the government’s emphasis on cultural construction. To “facilitate inter-
national exchange in art and deepen mutual understanding between Eastern and Western art, collect excellent
works of printmaking by printmakers around the world, and carry out exhibitions and publications to elevate
the popularity and standards of Taiwanese printmaking,” the “International Biennial Print Exhibit R.O.C.” was
launched in 1983, which has since become an important platform that propelled Taiwanese printmaking onto
the global stage, while also driving Taiwanese printmaking to exchange and connect with the world.
The Council for Cultural Affairs was the event organizer from theFirst International Biennial Print Exhibit
R.O.C. in 1983, to the Third International Biennial Print Exhibit R.O.C. in 1987. Starting with the Fourth
International Biennial Print Exhibit R.O.C. in 1989, the organization was commissioned to Taipei Fine Arts
Museum and National Central Library, adopting an exhibition format of diverse comparison. Taipei Fine Arts
Museum took over the organization by the Seventh International Biennial Print Exhibit R.O.C. in 1995, and the
exhibition featured both selected works through call for submissions and invited works. The Eleventh Biennial
in 2003 aimed to “be comprehensively elevated to the highest international standards through macro-perspec-
tives,” and was organized by National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts; the biennial exhibition also collaborated
with many exhibitions to further facilitate international exchange, in order to provide local printmakers more
opportunities to observe and exchange. Over the years, a printmaking thematic exhibition would always be
held simultaneously during the organization of “International Biennial Print Exhibit R.O.C.”
By now, it has been 35 years and 17 editions since the first International Biennial Print Exhibition R.O.C.,
which has profound influences and attracts thousands of printmakers from dozens of countries to participate.
Not only has it enabled Taiwanese artists to compete with artists from around the world, the exhibition has
also gradually gained the attention and recognition of overseas artists, becoming a major art event that attracts
global attention. The significances of such achievements are: 1. The International Biennial Print Exhibit R.O.C.
provides domestic and overseas printmakers a broad platform and has nurtured countless printmaking talents
30

for Taiwan, as well as large quantity of contemporary prints, stimulating the development of Taiwan’s modern
printmaking; 2. Influenced by international printmaking techniques, ever-progressing new techniques have
changed the traditional looks of prints, showcasing unique artistic properties of different materials, and bridged
domestic and international printmaking; 3. The event features broad and rich topics, including some topics
with great temporal significances, and modern works, such as environmental protection and ecology, natural
disasters, and information technology. Since the 12th International Biennial Print Exhibit R.O.C., the organizer
has designated specific topics for call for submissions, in order to further explore and compare artists’ creative
thinking; 4. The emergence of digital prints has propelled different expressions and contents unlike ordinary
prints, allowing printmakers to take the art form into a new era.
The social ambience after the lifting of martial law provided artists of the younger generation more choices for
themes and greater liberty for development; diverse styles and materials, centering around various political,
social, historical, and environmental issues, created a more vibrant and thriving creative scene. On the other
hand, compared to the works by artists of the first post-war generation or those who were more established and
experienced, these group of younger printmakers grew up in a more affluent and open social ambience. Their
distance with the rest of the world had been eliminated by the Internet and the speed of data transmission, and
this was a creative journey the artists in the past could not have experienced. Not only did they show their cre-
ativity through traditional media, young artists also utilized interdisciplinary creations, including videos and
installations and digital technology, to interpret their own artistic styles and ideals.
Conclusion
This paper discusses the development of modern printmaking in post-war Taiwan, giving a prelimi-
nary introduction to its history and changes in style. Examining the history, modern printmaking in Taiwan has
gone through 70 years of research, innovation, transformation, and hard work, establishing the status and look
of Taiwanese modern printmaking. In the 21st century today, it should be the shared responsibility of the print-
making community to “encourage and stimulate innovation through re-examination;” all modern printmakers
should consider the nature and essence of the art of printmaking, and pursue new progress and development.

Hungarian printmakers from Transylvania, Romania
I was very happy to respond to my friend Mr.Vlado Goreski request for an exciting subject for the
catalogue of the prestigious Triennial of Bitola in his quality of artistic director.
I stopped for a familiar to me subject but for sure original enough in the printing world and taking
advantage of this I am ready to reveal in a concentrate and subjective manner the world of Hungar-
ian printmakers of Transylvania coming up with 15 remarkable creative artists.
Being subjective until the end of this article I would tell you that this legendary territory known for
its vampires was giving to the world the talented jeweler Albrecht Ajtósi, father of Albrecht Dürer.
Despite the fact that Dürer activity known as “Father of the Western Printmaking” is happening
around Nürnberg (Germany), he is genetically spiritually and educationally tributary to a region
between Cluj and Gyula listening to his father stories and admiring his drawings. As a result there
were many landscapes in his works background reminding of Transylvanian scenery and views
In the spirit of Dürer a woodcut printing master was born of the legendary Transylvania, Mr. Gy.
Szabo Bela (1905-1985), who is having his outstanding artistic work practiced here and exemplified
by a set of illustrations of Dante’s Divina Comedia.
Being a student myself in Cluj I had a chance to catch the glory of printmaking section of the Art
Institute under the mastering of László Feszt (1930-2013),well known Transylvanian printmaker, a
master of highest quality intaglios, mezzotints and colographies the last ones technique being a
subject of study and perfectioning for his students of that time.
The majority of this selection were his students or influenced heavily by his work and genuine per-
sonality.
Beside László Feszt I would like to mention two Hungarian printmakers Ferenc Deák (1935-2013)
and Gusztáv Cseh Jr. (1934-1985). This triangle of excellence influenced to a big extent the Tran-
sylvanian printmakers especially the Hungarian printmakers and the ones mentioned here in my
selection.
My selection was made keeping in mind the high artistic value, the originality and diversity of print-
ing techniques of those selected ones. I carefully selected those artworks that shows all the print-
making techniques except lithography that’s more present at academic level.
The selection also was made in a way that represents the most of printmakers born in the interval
1945-1990 which are active, dedicated, well known in their country and abroad.
Here is the list by date of birth: István Orth (1945), Gyöngyi Károly Zöld (1949), Jakab Ábrahám
(1952), Gyöngyvér Horváth (1952), Sarolta Puskai (1955), Géza Székely (1958), Dénes Miklósi (1960),
István-Miklós Koszti (1961), Gabriella Lakatos (1963), Ferenc Siklódy (1968), Tibor Egyed (1969),
Elemér Bartis (1970), Csaba Léstyán (1975), Imola Ábrahám (1978), Attila-Levente Németh (1990).
I like to conclude that all this artists were proposed in the spirit and guidelines of Tribuna Graph-
ic exhibitions that I have the honor to organize since 2010 and therefore cached the attention of
Mr.Vlado Goreski for the catalogue of the last passed Triennial of Bitola
