WHERE THE WEST IS FUN:
SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR
This year we have a Western theme,
merging the history of the region from
the 1880s to pop-culture elements of
today. That means country music, a
rodeo, a Fiesta del Charro (“tequila
sampling and piñata striking”), a
Frontier Town (an area for kids with a
blacksmith and costumed frontier char-
acters), and a themed exhibit by the
main entrance with history and art of
the 1880s (and more costumed charac-
ters). All the regular stuff will be there,
too, including music at
the Grandstand Stage,
fair-food extremes,
exhibits by children
and hobbyists, and
displays of California
agriculture (the reason
the fair started in the
first place). $11–$18.

A VINE AFFAIR
Five museums in Balboa Park will offer
unique art installations, live music,
food pairings, and wine education.
The San Diego History Center hosts a
wine-education series where vintners,
sommeliers, and brewers reveal their
secrets. The House of Hospitality,
in conjunction with The Prado
Restaurant, will honor Balboa Park’s
heritage with a Spanish-themed tasting
room featuring Spanish wine, paella,
and tapas. There’s a British theme at
The Fleet Science Center in honor of
their exhibition Sherlock Holmes & the
Clocktower Mystery — enjoy Victorian-
era London with steampunk group
The Velveteen Band (“a kaleidoscopic
musical sideshow with puppets on
vocals”) and British food and sherry.

KUKKIWON CUP: TAEKWONDO
CHAMPIONSHIP
The U.S. Kukkiwon Cup Taekwondo
Championship is held on the beach by
the City of Oceanside and Kukkiwon,
the official taekwondo headquarters
in Korea. The championship demon-
