Generally, chemical processes are designed with the use of inaccurate mathematical models. Therefore, it is
important to create a chemical process that guarantees the satisfaction of all design specifications either exactly or
with some probability. This paper considers the issue of chemical process optimization when at the operation stage
the design specifications should be met with some probability and the control variables can be changed. We have
developed a common approach for solving one-stage and two-stage optimization problems with joint chance
constraints for the cases in which the uncertain parameters are either independent random variables with arbitrary
probability distributions or dependent normally distributed random variables. This approach is based on
PROCESS DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT
approximate transformation of chance constraints into deterministic constraints. This excludes the numerical
calculation of multiple integrals for computation of the left-hand sides of chance constraints.
It is our opinion that process engineering services are no longer adequate or complete without the presence of
comprehensive process simulation software and chemical engineers highly skilled in its use. In the ever more
competitive world of manufacturing, it is no longer acceptable to determine just a correct answer - the BEST answer
is required. And it is almost never possible to achieve the best answer within the confines of any client's project
budget without the use of simulation software. Answers like:
The feasibility of, and optimum operating conditions for utilizing a two-tower valve tray distillation system
(originally designed for depropanizing and debutanizing gasoline) for the production of high-purity propane,
iso-butane, and n-butane from various pipeline and refinery feedstocks
The optimum process orientation and operating conditions for a multi-tower absorption system for
producing maximum product concentration, minimum offgas concentration, and minimum operating costs
The optimum reactor design and operating conditions for maximum product yield and minimum byproduct
contamination
The fact that despite energy savings as compared to a distillation system, a multi-effect evaporator was not
technically feasible due to operational instability
The optimum number of stages and operating conditions for minimizing energy consumption for a product-
concentrating distillation system
The best retrofit option for a solvent recovery condensing system, maximizing product recovery while
eliminating downtime due to freezing events
The best retrofit option for a fume incineration system, minimizing supplemental fuel usage.
All real projects recently completed by FLOWTORQ. In all cases it was possible to get the BEST answer from process
simulation.
PROCESS DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT
The majority of Process Plants require a plot plan with somewhat less stringent and less complicated arrangements
than a refinery. Equipment spacing requirements will vary with the type of plant and location. Plot plans are
considered key documents to projects and are normally initiated in the pre-contract, conceptual and development
stages of a proposal. After the contract is awarded for engineering, plot plans are developed at a rather rapid pace
with very limited information. This early stage plot plan usually is very limited in detail, containing only enough
dimensional data to define the outer limits of the available property selected for plant development. Located within
the boundaries of the available property, rough equipment sizes and shapes are pictorially positioned, along with
anticipated pipe rack configurations, structure shape and rough sizes. The plot plan at this level of detail is then used
for constructability evaluation and is normally submitted to the client for approval.
Ideally, before site selection, a preliminary layout should be made. The data collected during the site
selection stage shall be given due consideration at the time of the equipment layout. A few points to be
considered are:
Site location, map and area topography, geological and meteorological data.
Environment condition relative to adjacent properties: proximity to railway, road, airport.
Soil conditions, prevailing wind direction.
Source of water supply and the supply point with respect to the plot.
Electric supply point with respect to the plot.
Effluent disposal point and other drainages.
Material transportation-railway entry point approach roads barge or ship dock etc.
Geographical factors: wind direction, temperature, rain, frequent thunderstorm and earthquake
susceptible areas
The most economical plant layout is that in which the spacing of the main equipment is such that it minimizes
interconnecting pipe work and structural steel work. Normally equipment should be laid out in sequence to suit the
process flow but exception to this arises from the desirability to group certain tanks, pumps or perhaps to isolate
hazardous operations according to statutory rules and regulations. The use of the single stream or multiple stream
flow pattern will affect the layout. The major variables affecting the final layout are interconnected pipe sizes,
insulation thickness, steel work spacing, matters of operational convenience, safety, ease of erection and
maintenance which calls for critical judgment on the experience and the study of existing and known limitation.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
Structural analysis essentially means evaluating the product’s structural design under stipulated loads, boundaries,
conditions and pressures. It analyses the structural integrity of the product under various circumstances to identify
the weak areas or errors in the product design. Once they are isolated, the design fallacies can then be worked upon,
and corrected to develop a design that performs under desired circumstances. In other words, the purpose of
structural analysis is to keep the axial, torsional, shear, bending and any other internal forces of a product within
permissible limits.
PRESSURE VESSEL DESIGN
In recent years, there has been a significant move towards utilizing design by analysis approach for pressure vessel
design, due to the ability to consider higher allowable stresses and get more real, economic and reliable results. The
recent development in computational technologies has further permitted engineers to develop cost-effective
pressure vessels using the design-by-analysis approach.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) enables pressure vessel designers to study stresses over the entire geometry and
optimize material usage. Further, FEA is a tool that helps design engineers to size pressure vessels at much reduced
cost and time.
AUTOMATION ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS
FLOWTORQ Engineering is expert in innovative assembly and testing solutions. We build customized automated
assembly and automated solutions to material handling and manufacturing industry. Our egineering team is capable
of developing simulations to desired output. Automation is one of most important part of any industry which
requires fast, cost effective and automated production and assembly solutions. Our automation simulation &
engineering division helps in building and developing pneumatic circuits with accessories so that the optimum
desired output could be acheived with minimum trial error with actual purchased equipments. Linear and rotary
actuators along with different accessories, when combined in a proper sequence may result into the most optimum
and desired motion in free or controlled manner. Automated assembly lines, automated damper control, automated
push-pull mechanism, roll lifters for paper, metal sheets manufacturing industry, automated material handling
systems, all require controlled or uncontrolled motion.
