The couple had saved to make the trip from New York. They planned to go to Pucallpa so Diana could finally meet Gabriel's dad. “It’s just a hop, skip and a jump and we will be there in no time,” Gabriel told Diana, who was a nervous flier. A few minutes later, they boarded the plane and it took off into the blue skies. The 480-kilometre flight would take an hour. ‘After a while, they heard the pilot instructing the passengers to fasten their seat belts. Moments later, as the 737 began its descent, the skies outside darkened. Rain pelted the windows and the plane began to bump and roll. The turbulence increased and it caused the aircraft to wobble. “Oh, my God!” eried Diana. She grabbed her husband’s arm. “It’s okay,” he said. “It happens all the time.” But Gabriel was nervous too. Out of the window, he saw tree tops. “Thank God, we're almost down,” he thought. The plane continued to drop 50 feet, then stop and plunge down another 50 feet. The lights in the cabin flickered out. The aircraft was out of control and hurtled downwards. It cut through the thick rain forest and slammed to the ground, breaking in half. In front of Gabriel, seats flew into the air. Oxygen masks popped from overhead, “Pll never see my kids again,” thought Diana, Gabriel was thrown forward in his seat. He looked up and saw an orange fireball burst in front of him. “I can’t get my seat belt off!” Diana screamed. The plane was in chaos, passengers were screaming as they sprang from their seats and scrambled into the aisle. Gabriel rushed to Diana who was still stuck to her seat. He frantically struggled with the clasp for a few seconds and eventually managed to undo her seatbelt. Gabriel tried to calm his panic-stricken wife. He pulled her towards him in an effort to soothe her. Then, he urged her to walk down the aisle ahead of him. ‘The passengers were jumping out through the breach in the middle of the plane, Everyone hurried towards the exit, pushing and shoving. People were knocked to the floor, Others scrambled over them. Amidst the chaos and pandemonium, Gabriel heard a ery behind him. He turned and saw an old woman still trapped to her seat as she was unable to unlatch her seatbelt. He dashed towards her. This time, he instinctively knew what to do. In no time, he managed to free her. Then he told her to walk in front of him. After a few steps she stumbled and lost her balance as the plane was shaking. She shricked in pain, “[ can’t move! Help me!” she called out in dismay. As quick as lightning, Gabriel scooped her in his arms and ran towards the exit. The three of them leapt out and landed on the muddy ground.
