s this Friends newsletter heads to print, Fellows Riverside Gardens is hibernating under a blanket
of snow. This will soon change, however. In March, the snow will melt, the days will get longer,
and the temperature will rise. Early spring bulbs like crocus, scilla, and snowdrops will herald the
coming spring.
Spring at Fellows Riverside Gardens begins in earnest in April. As the days grow longer and the grass
turns greener, the Seasonal Display beds, the Family Garden, the DeYor concourse just beyond the Davis
Education & Visitor Center, and the parking lot beds all come to life. Look for scilla, snowdrops, hyacinths,
and miniature daffodils in these areas by mid-April. Daffodils (narcissus) will also be in bloom in mass in
the Rhododendron/Woodland Garden. Because of the many varieties of daffodils planted in this area, this
daffodil display will continue until mid-May. From mid to late April, visitors can also see flowering perennials
like Hellebore, Lily-of-the-valley and Bleeding Hearts in the Perennial Garden and Shade Garden, as well as
in other areas.
By late April, it’s tulip time. Every fall, staff and volunteers plant thousands of tulips, and the many different
varieties create a spectacular display from late April through mid-May. In May, also look for Primrose, Spring
Snowflakes and Hostas in the Shade Gardens; Peonies and Bearded Iris behind the Gazebo; and Lupine,
Allium, Poppies, and Geraniums (just to name a few) in the Perennial Garden. Just follow the bees!
Fellows Riverside Gardens also has a fine collection of flowering trees and shrubs. Magnolias should be
in bloom by mid-April, followed closely by Flowering Crabs, Quince, Dogwoods, and other varieties that
bloom through late May. When the dogwoods are in bloom, the view over Lake Glacier from behind the
Kidston Pavilion is among the finest in all of Ohio. As for flowering shrubs, Azaleas begin to bloom in late
April, followed by Spirea, Viburnum, Rhododendrons, and Hydrangeas throughout May and into June.
While visiting the Gardens this spring, also be on the lookout for the “other” two legged visitors, the ones
with wings. Early spring is a great time to see robins, cardinals and other birds because they are easy to spot
in the mostly bare trees. Later in spring, birds can be seen and photographed in the flowering trees. Overall,
March, April and May are among the best months to experience Fellows Riverside Gardens!
