ABSTRACT

Introduction : Low Birth Weight (LBW) is a birth weight < 2500 gram. LBW is
one of the problems in the field of perinatal health because from 20 million births
each year in the world are categorized of LBW as much as 15-20%. Birth weight
infant is one of the factors that may affect Apgar score.

Objective : To determine the correlation between LBW with Apgar score at RSUD
Dr. Pirngadi Medan.

Methods : This research was an analytic observational research with cross

sectional design through a retrospective approach that was conducted from
October to November 2016, involving 42 samples with sampling technique that
total sampling. The data was collected using medical records of LBW babies at
RSUD Dr. Pirngadi Medan in 2013 to 2015.

Result : Among 42 cases of LBW, Moderate LBW (61,9%), Very LBW (31,0%),
and Extremely LBW (7,1%) were found in this study. Normal Apgar score
(61,9%), moderate asphyxia (35,7%), and severe asphyxia (2,4%) were found in
1st minute Apgar score. Normal Apgar score (76,2%) and moderate asphyxia
(23,8%) were found in 5th minute Apgar score. Spearman hypothesis test showed a
positive corellation between LBW with 1st minute and 5th minute Apgar score, with
significancy or p value (p = 0.000 and 0.003) and correlation value (r = 0.532
and 0.418).

Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between LBW with 1st and 5th
minute Apgar score (p value 0,000 and 0,003). The higher the weight on the LBW
infants, the higher 1st and 5th Apgar score (r=0,532 and 0,418) indicated a
positive correlation with moderate strength.
