ANALYTIC GEOMETRY

I. General Directions: Read each question carefully and write your solutions and final
answers inside the box below each number. Do not use the back page of your answer
sheet. Make sure that your answers and solutions are clearly written otherwise they will
be marked wrong. 5 points each number.

A. Write the equation of the ellipse that satisfies the following conditions (1-3)

1. Center at (5,1), Vertex at (5,4), end of a minor axis at (3,1).

2. Vertex at (6,3), foci at (-4,3) and (4,3)

3. Foci at (-4,2) and (4,2), length of major axis is 10.

B. Reduce each equation to standard form. Then find the coordinates of the center,
the vertices, and the foci. (4-5)
4. 3x2 – 2y2 + 4y – 26 = 0

5. 4x2 – 9y2 + 8y – 54x - 81 =0

C.
𝑥2 𝑦2
6. Show that (c,0) is a focus and x = (a2/c) is a directrix of the hyperbola 𝑎2 − 𝑏2 = 1

7. Find the equation of the path of a point that moves so that its distance from (4, 0) is
twice its distance from the line x = 1.

8. Write the equation of the family of ellipses whose common foci are (-6, 0) and (6,0).
Find the member of the family that passes through (9,0)
