SCULPTURE 2

Assignment #1
Balsa Wood Carving

Vocabulary:

Three-dimensional, form, free-standing, organic shape, geometric shape

Artist:

Barbara Hepworth

Elements of Art: form, space, texture

Principles of Design: repetition, variety, unity, rhythm

Criteria:
 Change the geometric balsa block to an organic form
 Sculpture must be free-standing and able to be viewed from all sides
 Some element is repeated with variation to lead the viewer’s eye around the sculpture
 Final piece is sanded. If an area of contrast is desired, can leave a section unsanded or
can paint.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Slowly and carefully carve the edges of the block down to create more of a curve.
ALWAYS carve away from yourself and with your non-carving hand out of the way. DO
NOT carve toward your leg.
2. Begin to transform the block more by carving further into one section. When you need
to, turn the block aro`und to carve the other side.
3. Repeat what you did in one other area but change it slightly.
4. Continue carving so that the entire surface is transformed.
5. Sand to create a smooth finish.
