Here are my general thoughts on the topic. We teach inclusiveness and value of all people and families in a broad sense and all year long-not just during pride week. There is no pride curriculum, or lessons on sexual orientation. We absolutely support families having these discussions with their children at home, as they bubble up organically. My wife went to a Concerned Parents of Austin meeting last week with members of SHAC present. It apparently was a heated discussion. We have sent two emails and have three voicemails to the principal with no response. We plan to go to the schoo! today and hopefully they are available, | think that is part of the frustration is understanding what will and won't be taught. The SHAC folks seemed convincing that this should be a subject taught. it also sounded asif the amount taught to the kids was at the teachers discretion; not a consistent policy throughout AISD. Kiker Elementary was able to opt out. Alot of rambling be me so sorry about that. We're just trying to get some feedback. In the end, itis Pride Week, not diversity week. And Pride week is specific to highlighting the LGBTQ community. My other thought on that is that if we do not try to "define" Pride week as such, that the FAQ on the back may seem to be coming out of nowhere. Can you please review this poster and give your approval or suggestions prior to the students printing this poster? The students are limited in time and funding (our club has no funding) so they are doing the best they can to use personal and school resources to print and hang new posters. We will keep the updated Pride Info poster up on our wall outside my classroom and we are working on creating another LGBTQIA¢ Wall of Heroes this year. ‘The students have worked diligently to take the feedback to heart and to create new posters. They felt horrible about the misunderstanding. The president of GSA is a trans male student and we have several trans students and students from all along the gender spectrum. In their effort to be more inclusive to the rast of campus, they inadvertently offended some students. | truly hope all involved can understand that this is a student group and these students are doing the best the can to support all mambers of the LGBTQIA+ community and to encourage allies to join the lub and support the community. We are truly sorry and saddened that our efforts to celebrate the LGBTOIA+ community resulted in outrage. ‘This is the message | sent to the GSA students via the group FB page on Sept 26: Group: | have received two complaints about the GSA Pride Week posters regarding how Trans people are ‘associated with “cross-dressing.” | believe this was a miscommunication between the desire to be Spirit Day atyled (telling students how to dress) versus discussing how to respect and honor each group. | will be working on creating a mini poster that we can put up beside the Pride Week posters to provide additional information, Here is the verbiage from the announcements: 926 Hello, Crockett!
