Interactive Student Notebooks

I am very pleased to have you as a part of our 6th or 7th Grade Math class for the 2018-2019 school
year! As part of our class, we will be constructing an Interactive Student Notebook (ISN). Everything
you need to know about an Interactive Student Notebook is included below.

What are ISNs?

The purpose of an ISN is to enable you to be a creative, independent and reflective thinker throughout
the course of the school year. ISNs allow you to express your thoughts, ideas and opinions about our
content in a creative and visual way. You will essentially build your own textbook that will be full with
notes, graphs, reflections, word problems, foldables, etc. ISNs also help with learning organization and
study habits.

How are ISNs organized?

A table of contents is located at the front of the notebook and each page is identified by a page
number. A marble composition book will be used in order to create your interactive student notebook.
There will be an equal distribution of “Teacher-Input” and “Student-Input” throughout the notebook.
Examples of Teacher-Input activities include notes, word problems, and classroom activities. Examples
of Student-Input activities include practice, analysis, reflection and review activities.

How can I be successful using my ISN?

The most important part of an ISN is keeping up with assignments and staying organized. If you miss a
day of school, you will need to make up the assignment. I will keep a “master ISN” for such purposes. In
addition to referring to the “master ISN” when absent, you may also ask another classmate about missed
assignments. Take pride in your ISN and produce thoughtful, purposeful work.

As long as you keep up with assignments and put forth notable effort towards each assignment, you will
be successful! Notebooks will be graded periodically. Students are responsible for keeping up with their
interactive notebooks. We will not use our ISNs every day; however students should always come to
class prepared with all materials. Please sign and return, indicating you are aware of expectations
concerning Interactive Student Notebooks.
