HYDROMETER ANALYSIS:

For this experiment, using hydrometer analysis, the only data gathered for the table below were
the Actual Hydrometer Readings and the rest were calculated and obtained by using the tables found in
the laboratory manual. The values for the Effective Depth can be obtained from Table 1 in the manual.
However, for Actual Hydrometer Reading below 1.000, the effective depth is not given. So, we
interpolated the values using Microsoft Excel to obtain the effective depth of actual hydrometer readings:
0.999 and 0.998. For the succeeding values in the table, it can be calculated using the formulas given
below.

Temperature of distilled water: 82°F

Hydrometer Reading: 0.996

Temperature of water with soil: 84°F

READINGS:

 Temperature @ 28°C

K= 0.01244

 For Diameter, use formula

D=K√(L/t)

Where, t is in minutes.

 Temperature Correction for 28˚C

C= +2.50
 Correction Factor, a= 1.00
 Ws= 113g
 Rc=Ractual – zero correction + Ct
 % Finer, P = {[Rc(a)]/Ws} x 100
 Adjusted % Finer, PA = [P(F200)]/ 100
Where, F200 = 8.4 %
Sieve Analysis:

For the sieve analysis, the group gathered the following data: mass of sieve (Nos. 4, 10, 20, 50,
100, & 200), mass of sieve and soil, mass of container, and mass of container with sample. With these
data, mass of soil retained, percentage of soil retained and percentage of soil passing are calculated
using a program in Microsoft Excel. Then, to get the Uniformity Coefficient, Cu and the Coefficient of
Curvature, Cc, the values D10, D30, and D60 should be identified first. These are the most commonly used
metrics when describing particle size distributions which are the intercepts for 10%, 30% and 60% of the
cumulative mass. For getting the D-values, we also used Microsoft Excel. Then Cu and Cc can then be
computed using the following formulas:

Coefficient of Curvature

Cc = (D30)2 / D60 D10

Uniformity Coefficient

Cu= D60 / D10
