Welcome to
the
ARTSTRAIL
This year the SHAF Arts Trail runs
from October 13th to October 28th and
features 68 artists exhibiting in 31 stu-
dios/venues at 16 locations across the
South Hams.
SHAF membership is extremely diverse, so
while many artists create in purpose-built
studios, others produce their work at the
kitchen table. Consequently, the Arts Trail
will lead visitors to some artists working in
their home studios and to others exhibiting
in galleries and exhibition halls.
At each venue, visitors will find artists hap-
py to discuss their art-form, explain the pro-
cesses involved and provide the opportu-
nity to view, appreciate and buy unique art
pieces. Visitors who “follow the Arts Trail”
also enjoy an unusual opportunity to explore
the glorious South Hams as they map their
route and discover more and more artists’
venues (as well as award-winning pubs,
restaurants, and Devon cream tea venues).
Our brochure features every SHAF artist
participating in the Arts Trail and includes
a description of his or her work, together
with directions to each venue and opening

What is SHAF?
The South Hams Arts Forum (SHAF)
is a lively, actively engaged association
of artists and craftspeople from across
the region.

SHAF is open, friendly, has over 100

talented and enthusiastic members and SHAF artists - Left Caroline Barker / Right Kim Watkins
always welcomes new members, whether
they are seasoned or emerging artists.
Over the past decade, SHAF has regularly
staged exhibitions in the South Hams.
Every year, SHAF members have the
opportunity to take part in regular shows,
notably Contemporary Passions in the
spring, a December Christmas event
(Present Maker)—both held in the Harbour
House Gallery, Kingsbridge—and, of
course, The Arts Trail in October.

Membership in SHAF includes regular
meetings, talks and demonstrations, as
well as social gatherings which allow
members to meet and network with like-
minded artists, share ideas, skills, and learn
from each other. Each member is invited to
enter a profile on the SHAF website gallery
which serves as a useful promotional tool.

The work of Juliana Depledge

Juliana Depledge draws and
paints aquatic and botanical
subjects in exquisite detail.
An “endless inspiration from nature”
has not only informed her art but
also her work as Resident Artist at the Na-
tional Marine Aquarium in Plymouth where
she spent nineteen years fostering links

“We were creating art activities to underpin
the science messages to our visitors, en-
couraging them to use drawing as a way
of noticing more about our animals. You
look differently when you are drawing,” she
says.
Juliana helped the aquarium develop its art
programme through special events, week-
end activities and the nationwide annual
32 Big Draw. Long before colouring books
became as popular as they are now she
was designing intricate colouring sheets for
children and adults and leading tours of the
aquarium using drawing.
Juliana’s own love of drawing was fostered
by one of her art teachers.“My education-
al work, encouraging children to draw, to
look closely and to use a sketchbook - that
passing-on of my love of drawing - has
been really important to me, perhaps be-
cause when I was 16 a particular art teach-
er helped me to discover that I could draw.”
After retiring from the aquarium she was
one of the artists selected by the Royal
College of Physicians to illustrate a book of
medicinal plants celebrating the college’s
500th anniversary. An exhibition of the
paintings was held at the college in London
this August.
Juliana is opening her studio in New-
ton Ferrers for the South Hams Arts Trail
where she will be exhibiting watercolour
paintings, prints and cards of aquatic and
botanical subjects, one of twelve artists in
the village taking part. For more informa-
