RELEASE OF FLIGHTS UNDER MEL WHEN ANTI-ICE NOT AVAILABLE

The AFM defines icing conditions as under:

'Icing conditions exist when the OAT on the ground and for takeoff or
TAT in-flight is 10° C or below, and visible moisture in any form is
present (such as clouds, fog with visibility of one mile or less, rain,
snow, sleet and ice crystals).'

Avoid icing conditions by ensuring TAT above 10° C. Following are the
highest flight levels that can be selected for flight planning and
dispatch purposes at 250 KIAS / 280 KIAS, depending on the airspace

The maximum design energy (EMAX) for the brakes is as follows:-

Airplane Type Brake Brake Energy Brake Brake Energy

Category Limit (MFP) Category Limit (MFP)
(STEEL) (CARBON)
737-700 Cat 'F' 56 Cat 'M' 60
737-800 Cat 'C' 56 Cat 'N' 60
737-900 Cat 'G' 56 Cat 'O' 60
737-900ER Cat 'H' 56 Cat 'P' 60

Residual brake energy (ERESIDUAL) after previous landing or RTO can be calculated
from the brake cooling schedule.

Therefore available brake energy (EAVAILABLE) is the difference of maximum design

energy minus the residual brake energy.

EAVAILABLE = EMAX - ERESIDUAL

Now, if EAVAILABLE is less than the energy required for the RTO in the subsequent
takeoff, the takeoff must be delayed and brakes cooled until EAVAILABLE is equal to or
more than required for subsequent RTO.

RTOW CALCULATION USER GUIDE

NOTE:- The EFB On-board Performance Tool (OPT) is the preferred means of generating
takeoff data. Takeoff data is to be calculated by one pilot and cross-checked with other pilot.

1. The RTOW charts are available for all the airports through which B737-
700W/800/800W/900/900ERW aircraft are operating.

2. The charts provided are for the following combinations of conditions:-

• Air Conditioning (A/C) AUTO and OFF.

• Engine Rating 22K (737-700W) / 24K (737-800/800W) / 26K (737-800W) / 24K TO-1
Derate (737-900) / 27K (737-900ERW). 737-900 aircraft is fitted with 26K rated
engines. However, Jet Airways is contractually obliged to use the engines at TO-1
(24K Derate) for takeoff except while taking off with EEC in alternate mode.

• Runway DRY or WET. Wet Runway charts have been calculated with 15 ft screen
height, DRY check and with available reverse thrust credit

• Flaps 1 (737-700W for Leh & Thoise) or Flaps 5 or Flaps 15.

In case runway surface is contaminated / slippery, takeoff performance needs to be

established through FCOM or FPPM or by generating specific RTOW charts or thru EFB-
OPT.

3. “A” indicates OAT outside environmental envelope. Data beyond environmental

envelope is presented for Assumed Temperature Method (ATM) takeoff purposes.

4. Against OAT, the climb limit weight is presented followed by the lowest of Tire speed /
Brakes energy / Field / Obstacle / 5 min (or 10 min) takeoff thrust limit weight for –10
knots (tailwind), 0 (nil wind), +5 knots and +10 knots (headwind).

5. The following information used is common to all the charts:-

• Maximum certified takeoff weight for individual aircraft registration shall have to
be complied as per applicable AFM. This value is available at cockpit placard, Trim
sheet and in the Operational Flight Plan. In RTOW charts improved climb weights (if
available) are restricted to maximum weight of 64000kg for 737-700W, 72000kg for
737-800 / 800W 24K, 79015kg for 737-800W 26K, 74389kg for 737-900 and
85139kg for 737-900ERW.

• Flap retraction height is normally minimum 800ft AGL except where Engine Out
Escape Procedures (EOEPs) are established or obstacles infringing the Net Takeoff
Path plus regulatory margins. If the minimum flap retraction height (typically
representing obstacle clearance height criterion) printed at right bottom of the
chart is higher than standard 800ft, then follow the published minimum
acceleration height.

• Limit codes, as suffix, signify the following:-

o F → Field limit weight.

o T → Tire speed limit weight.
o B → Brake energy limit weight.
o V → V1 (MCG) limit weight.
o * → Obstacle/5 min (or 10 min) engine takeoff thrust raHng level-off limit
weight. (For the OAT, if the published weight increases across the wind
column with increasing head wind, then it is obstacle limited weight.
Otherwise, if the weight across the wind column remains constant, then it is 5
min(or 10 min) engine takeoff thrust rating limit. For Leh / Kathmandu /
Thoise and –700W / 800W & –900 / 900ERW charts, one engine in-operative
takeoff thrust rating limit is 10 minutes).
o ** → Improved Climb weight for level-off or obstacle limit weight.

• TORA, TODA, ASDA, Runway slope, Line-up distances (60’/60’/70’/70’/80’/80’ for

TORA & TODA and 110’/110’/120’/120’/130’/130’ for ASDA for –700W/-800/-
800W/-900/-900ERW respectively). Obstacles considered are indicated with
reference from lift off end of the runway.

6. Takeoff performance has been established either for one engine inoperative straight out
departures by following established SOPs or by establishing turning departures for
terrain / airspace / obstacle avoidance. As required by ICAO Annexure 6 / Doc 8168, to
ensure safety of operations, Engine Out Escape Procedures (EOEPs) have been
established and are mandatory. However, Captain may use his emergency authority to
disregard these in the interest of safety. Remarks for one engine inoperative scenarios
are as follows:-

• For straight out departures, without an EOEP, a remark "AS PER SOP" is mentioned
in OPT / RTOW chart.

• If the selected runway has a Jet Airways tailored EOEP (10-7 / 20-7 tailored pages in
Jeppesen Airway Manual), the comment will read "FOLLOW ENGINE OUT ESCAPE
PROCEDURE PUBLISHED IN THE ROUTE GUIDE’ as a text in OPT / RTOW chart.

• If the selected runway has a turning departure with Jeppesen text EOEP and EOEP
schematic is not available as tailored page in Jeppesen Airway Manual, the
comment will read ‘SEE SPECIAL PROCEDURE FOR THIS RUNWAY’ in OPT / RTOW
chart. In OPT, click on ARPT INFO>RWY COMMENT to view the Procedure or ask for
OPT print-out for SPECIAL PROCEDURE from Flight Despatch.

7. Minimum height to initiate turn after takeoff with All Engines Operating (AEO) is 800ft
AGL, except for runway having EOEPs calling for AEO turn below 800ft AGL, e.g. Udaipur
RWY 26 and Imphal RWY 04 or Captain’s discretion due operational reasons. AEO flap
retraction height can be suitably increased from 800ft AGL, if required due noise
abatement procedure for specific airfields.

8. Charts can be interpolated linearly both row-wise and column-wise, but no

extrapolation is permitted from the charts.

9. 737-800/-800W/900/900ER unscheduled operations are not permitted to operate from

less than 7000 ft runway length unless specifically permitted as per OM provisions e.g.
737-800/800W operations from Jammu & Patna etc. (Please comply with landing field
limitations as appropriate).

10. Takeoff speeds (V1-VR-V2) are presented for “Published Weight”.

• For unimproved climb performance, at a given temperature and wind, “Published
Weight” is lowest of climb limit weight, applicable wind column weight and
maximum restricted weight shown at bottom of the chart.
• For improved climb performance, at a given temperature and wind, “Published
Weight” is the improved climb weight limited to maximum restricted weight shown
at bottom of the chart.

Due to space constraints, the “1” representing 100 is omitted in the takeoff speeds. For
applicable Maximum certified takeoff weight, speeds need to be established.
e.g. from the chart below,

decrease performance limiting weight by 80kg per hPa for 737-700W/-800/-800W/-
900/-900ERW. If the QNH is higher than standard, to be conservative, no correction is to
be made (except Leh and Thoise).

12. In case the takeoff is performed under icing conditions, appropriate engine anti-ice
correction must be applied from FCOM PD section or FPPM. (Refer Ex. 11)

16. Carry out bleeds off full thrust take-off from Performance Limited Airports (Refer Ex.
11).

For airports which are not Performance Limited Airports, ATM take-off can be carried
out when the actual take-off weight is less than the normal (unimproved) TOW
(performance). Start with A/C Auto chart unless specified by Engineering to carry out
ATM with A/C OFF (Refer Ex. 6).

Follow the flow chart in the following pages to find assumed temperature and speeds
for ATOW. (Refer Ex. 2 to 11).

For very low actual takeoff weight, if Reference Weight (ATOW+QNH Correction+AI
Correction) is below the published weight (unimproved climb) shown for the maximum
temperature printed in the chart, use speeds (and assumed temperature, if permitted)
corresponding to maximum temperature. (Refer Ex. 4).

17. OPT:-

• Refer OPT user guide as a quick reference on how to use OPT.

• ATM take-off can be carried out, either with A/C AUTO or A/C OFF, when the actual
take-off weight is less than the TOW (performance).

• It is recommended to use optimum flaps to maximize performance limited takeoff

weight, or assumed temperature. Crew needs to carefully select the correct flap as
advised by OPT.

• If the minimum flap retraction height indicated by OPT is higher than standard
800ft, then follow the indicated minimum acceleration height.

• Using the correct ambient condition data, will ensure correct and most optimized
takeoff calculations.

• Use of assumed temperature on Dry and Wet runways is permitted. Derate may
give better performance on contaminated runways. In either condition, limitations
mentioned in point 15 should be adhered to.

• Generally, Assumed temperature is carried with A/C AUTO. A/C OFF takeoff may be
carried out on specific occasions when engineering requests Flight Operations to
carry A/C OFF takeoff due technical reasons or Supplementary Procedures for
operations in a sandy or dusty environment recommend maximum ATM
(performance permitting) with Bleeds Off.

• OPT speeds could be higher than paper RTOW charts as OPT uses precise values of
wind component, QNH correction and considers improved climb (if feasible) while
providing assumed temperature value.

Ex. 3 If in Ex. (2), ATOW = 60000 Kg, find assumed temperature and speeds.

Soln: Since 60000 Kg (ATOW) <= 70533 Kg (RTOW), takeoff is possible.

Since VOHS is not a Performance Limited Airport, ATM as well as A/C AUTO
takeoff can be carried out.

Using A/C AUTO RTOW chart,

Reference weight = ATOW + QNH corr. + A/I corr. = 60000 + 800 + 0 = 60800 Kg

Look for Reference weight or nearest higher weight in climb limit weight column
and wind column weight of A/C AUTO chart,

Since New Temperature > OAT and ATM takeoff is possible,

Assumed Temperature = New Temperature (A/C AUTO) = 42 deg C
Takeoff Speeds (A/C AUTO) = 136-137-141K (corresponding to New Temperature)

Ex. 4 If in Ex. (2), ATOW = 50000 Kg; find assumed temperature and speeds.

Soln: Since 50000 Kg (ATOW) <= 70533 Kg (RTOW), takeoff is possible.

Since VOHS is not a Performance Limited Airport, ATM as well as A/C AUTO
takeoff can be carried out.

Using A/C AUTO RTOW chart,

Reference weight = ATOW + QNH corr. + A/I corr. = 50000 + 800 + 0 = 50800 Kg

Look for Reference weight or nearest higher weight in climb limit weight column
and wind column weight of A/C AUTO chart.
Since Reference Weight is below the published weight shown for the maximum
temperature printed in the chart, use speeds (and assumed temperature, if
permitted) corresponding to maximum temperature.

New Temperature = 60 deg C

Since New Temperature > OAT and ATM takeoff is possible,

Assumed Temperature = New Temperature (A/C AUTO) = 60 deg C

Soln: Since 60000 Kg (ATOW) <= 70533 Kg (RTOW), takeoff is possible.

Since VOHS is not a Performance Limited Airport, ATM as well as A/C AUTO
takeoff can be carried out. But in this case A/C OFF ATM to be carried out as per
engineering requirements.

Using A/C OFF RTOW chart,

Reference weight = ATOW + QNH corr. + A/I corr. = 60000 + 800 + 0 = 60800 Kg

Look for Reference weight or nearest higher weight in climb limit weight column
and wind column weight of A/C OFF chart (do not refer improved climb),
New Temperature = 46 deg C

Since New Temperature > OAT and ATM takeoff is permitted as per engineering
requirements,
Assumed Temperature = New Temperature (A/C OFF) = 46 deg C
Takeoff Speeds (A/C OFF) = 136-137-141K (corresponding to New Temperature)

In this case, A/C OFF takeoff is to be carried out. Ensure correct configuration is

Ex. 7 If in Ex. (2), ATOW = 68000 Kg, find assumed temperature and speeds.

Soln: Since 68000 Kg (ATOW) <= 70533 Kg (RTOW), takeoff is possible.

Since VOHS is not a Performance Limited Airport, ATM as well as A/C AUTO

Published speeds 143K-144K-149K are for Published weight.

Look for Reference weight or nearest higher weight in climb limit weight column
and wind column weight of A/C OFF chart (do not refer improved climb),
New Temperature = 32 deg C

Since New Temperature > OAT,

But ATM takeoff is not possible with A/C OFF as per current policy Full Thrust
Takeoff (A/C OFF),
Takeoff Speeds (A/C OFF) = 143-145-150K (corresponding to New Temperature)

If engineering requests ATM with A/C OFF,

Assumed Temperature = New Temperature (A/C OFF) = 32 deg C
Takeoff Speeds (A/C OFF) = 143-145-150K (corresponding to New Temperature)

In this case, A/C OFF takeoff is to be carried out. Ensure correct configuration is
