INSTRUCTIONS/REQUIREMENTS
ACHM422-Test 1-2017/KR 1
QUESTIONS: Electrothermal atomization (ETA) [25]
2. Briefly explain the significance of using an omega platform graphite tube for
analysis when using the electrothermal atomization technique (ETA) and
state why it has a slight advantage over the L’Vov platform. (5)
3.1 State one cause of this during measurement using ETA. (1)
4. State the purpose of the Atomize phase used in ETA briefly stating its
purpose, the range of temperature used, and duration recommended for
analysis. (3)
6. You are provided with a pure anhydrous Ca(NO3)2 salt, with assay = 99.0%.
Do the following calculations:
6.1 Calculate the exact mass (in g) of the salt required to prepare 500 mL
of a 100mg/L Ca standard solution. (Answer to 4 decimal places). (4)
6.2 If you made one dilution of a sample by pipetting 5ml of the standard in
a 20mL volumetric flask, calculate the dilution factor (NB: concentration
not required). (1)
6.3 If you made a subsequent dilution of the sample in 6.2 above by adding
5mL of the diluted standard in a 50 mL volumetric flask, calculate the
final dilution factor and concentration of the sample made. (3)
