Refining
Start of main content

Since TR began its operations, it has designed and constructed approximately 80% of Spanish refining capacity, and in

total has built approximately 300 refinery units throughout the world. TR experience in oil processing ranges from

constructing complete refineries to modernizations and expansions of existing refining facilities, for both international

customers and domestic companies.

The types of units designed and constructed include both basic refining units and conversion and octane enhancement

units.

After 46 years of experience in the refining sector, TR has accumulated know-how sufficient not only to develop and

optimize technologies of other licensors and customers, but also to develop complete and specific designs of its own for

a large number of refining units. TR has one of the best refining process departments in the world, with around 200

professionals.

TR is today one of the leading engineering and construction companies in this sector in the world, by number of

references, know-how and projects in which is currently participating.

From the very first refinery built for MARATHON OIL in 1963 (today operated by REPSOL-YPF) all along to the projects

underway in Egypt and Turkey, the TR group has taken part in the design and construction of the following units:

The expansion of the Ju’aymah Gas Fractionation Plant is part of the Hawiyah NGL Recovery Programme. The plant

has a depentanizer column and associated storage, vessels, pumps, metering and controls necessary for transfer of a

C6+ stream to petrochemical customers in Jubail.

NG, Liquefaction, Regasification & Storage

Start of main content

TR's expertise in NG projects includes Liquefaction, Regasification, Tanks and associated facilities. From the safety

point of view, these projects are particularly critical in all its phases. TR enjoys an excellent track record in safety; all the

facilities designed and built by TR entered into operation and actually are operating without any safety event.

As a world-scale Contractor, TR provides comprehensive services within the natural gas field, ranging from consultancy

jobs to turn-key contracting, including basic and detailed engineering, procurement, supply and transportation of

equipment and materials or construction supervision and management.

NG projects contracting are one of the main business lines for TR. Activities in this field started in 1967 and TR has

greatly contributed ever since to the development of high level natural gas infrastructure particularly in Spain, but as well

in Latin America, China, and North Africa.

In 2002 TR heavily involved in the design and construction in one of TR’s most renowned projects; the NG Train 1

Damietta, (SEGAS) in Egypt. It was the largest single train facility at the time with the shortest schedule for a plant of

this kind. Nowadays the plant is in commercial operation and recently TRsigned a Pre FEED agreement for the tentative

second train.

In 2010 TR was awarded its first NG project in the Far East, The Guangdong Zhuhai Golden Bay NG Tank and

different set of requirements and specifications and, therefore, each solution has been fit to purpose. The plants design

and key equipment selection (turbine, boilers, steam generators…etc) is performed upon the highest power engineering

standards, as well as CAPEX and OPEX optimization criteria for each project .

TR is a founding partner of Empresarios Agrupados, incorporated in 1971, which has played an important role as

Architectural Engineering in the design and construction of power generation plants worldwide.

CO2 Research Projects

Aware of the importance of acquired commitments both on a domestic and international level in terms of CO2

emissions, as well as the responsibility of social agents in charge of the development of industrial activity, TR has

initiated several activities, in order to identify designs that allow thermal generation under conditions that are compatible

with CO2 emission mitigation scenarios, applying the broad experience of TR in gas capturing and separation

processes in industrial plants.

TR has participated as partner in various research programmes, such as the “CENIT CO2” project or in the Singular

Strategic Project "Advanced CO2 generation, capture and storage projects”, headed by CIEMAT. Today, TR is

developing the engineering and FEED (Front End Engineering Design) of the OXY CFB 300 plant; a project supported

with 180 million from the European Commission (EC).

Fossil Fuel Power Plants

Start of main content
TR has broad experience in the fossil fuel power generation sector, having completed numerous projects in coal plants

(lignite, anthracite), fuel oil and diesel as well as natural gas and biomass using various technologies.

The experience in coal-based power generation plants is based on the execution of engineering, design, construction

management, plant modernization, feasibility studies and fulfilment of multiple requirements of our international

customers. Many different technologies have been used in the various projects; for example in boilers we have worked

with the specifications of technologists such as Babcock & Wilcox, Balcke-Dürr, Combustion Engineering, Foster

Wheeler, Stein and in steam turbines we have ABB, Alstom, General Electric, Mitsubishi, Siemens-Westinghouse.

In the combined cycle plant sector, since the engagement of the first projects in 1999 until today TR has managed to

position itself solidly in Spain after participating in more than fifteen combined cycle plant projects executed in Spain.

The experience in this sector has allowed TR to be a reference with international presence in Europe and Middle East,

totalling our involvement in more than 22,000 MW of installed power in combined cycle.
TR has notable experience in the design and construction of projects involving the comprehensive use of thermal

energy. Since the beginnings in the 80's, we developed our own know how within the field of cogeneration in order to

better cover demand of the industrial sector, increasingly more in favour of its own combined electricity and heat

generation. Among others, TR has executed over 50 cogeneration projects, totalling more than 900 MW of power, for

the refinery and gas industries, and other industrial sectors such as paper, chemistry, dairy, mining, iron and steel,

plastic, transformation, etc.

TR does not condition the selection of technology or the main equipment, which enables it to offer its customers an

optimal solution that fulfils the thermal and electrical requirements of each application.

Specific software used to simulate gas-water-steam cycles and gas turbine operation allows selecting the appropriate

cycle configuration at all times including all associated variables.

the various technologists, allows defining the optimal solution for each project, mutually agreed with the customer

maintaining the integrity and reliability of the turnkey installation.

In addition to strict quality compliance of products and reliability of the solutions, projects apply different multifeed

technologies (suitable for processing different types of oil such as sunflower, rapeseed, soya, etc.).
