PRT508 Detail Design 2 2018
Detail Design 2
Rapid Creek drains stormwater runoff from a large part of suburban Darwin, extending from the
eastern end of the airport, much of the airport itself and parts of the northern suburbs. Properties
near the mouth of the creek are subject to seasonal flooding.
The design task this year is to investigate this flooding and make recommendations to alleviate it.
The final assessment item, Detail Design 2, is to design a storage tank for chemicals found adjacent
to the airport and potentially able to enter the Rapid Creek catchment. The chemical is water‐based
and presents a health hazard by contact with skin. The tank must meet the following:
A large covered tank having a storage capacity of 50,000 m3
An independent retaining structure or bund is required around the outside of the tank to
contain the contents in case of rupture. The total capacity of the bunded area is to be 110%
of the maximum stored volume of the tank. Any chemical escaping into the bunded area is
to be retained by the bund indefinitely until remedial measures can be taken. In particular,
the chemical must not be allowed to percolate into the underlying subsoil strata in case it
contaminates aquifers.
Planning constraints prohibit any structure, including the bund, to be more than 5.0 m in
height above the surrounding ground level.
The area of land needed for the construction of the tank will be purchased by the client once
the plan area of the tank and bund has been established. Land prices are high and the client
wishes to keep the area of land to be purchased to a minimum.
The tank is required to have a life to first maintenance of 30 years. The chemical to be
stored has no known deleterious effect on any of the commonly used construction
materials.
Additional Information
Imposed loading
Density of water‐based chemical: 1100 kg/m3
Site conditions
A level site in a former industrial area on the outskirts of Darwin.
Ground conditions:
Ground level ‐ 2.0 m Made ground
2.0 m ‐ 8.0 m Sand and Gravel, N = 6 to 12
Below 8.0 m Clay, C = 200 kN/m2
Ground water was encountered at 2.5 m below ground level.
Omit from consideration services and access to and from the tank.
Final Integrated Design requirements
Prepare a viable design solution with appropriate sketches for the proposed chemical storage tank
including its foundations.
A clear statement must be made for the proposed design to indicate the fundamental philosophy of
its design, and materials to be used.
Numerous (hand‐drawn) sketches are required to show a plan view of the scheme, together with
sufficient elevations and sections to describe important features of the design.
These sketches must clearly indicate the:
functional framing,
load transfer,
and stability aspects
of the design that you propose.
During a detailed ground investigation, a significant portion of the proposed site is found to be
contaminated with toxic substances to a depth of 3.0 m. Write a letter to the client explaining the
effect this will have on your recommended design solution and the measures required to minimise
any resulting additional costs.
Marking guidelines for this task are available on Learnline. In particular, students are advised to take
special note of the information on the first page of the marking guidelines.
Detail Design 2 is due on the Monday of Week 11, in line with the study plan outlined in the Unit
Information.
