Grand finals; only one team can be a winner.
Six teams in the Central Highlands Football and
Netball League from Moorabool, (Gordon, Springbank
and Bungaree), battled it out on the court and the oval
at North Ballarat last Saturday.
Unfortunately, five of those teams lost their matches,
some by the smallest margin, one goal for the netballers
in B Grade and 15&Under.
For the Gordon Under 15 junior footballers, it was
19-years since the club had their last premiership flag
and 2018 was not going to break the drought.
Up against Skipton, who had not lost a match all
season, the juniors did the best they could, but grand
final nerves and the large ground proved too much,
going down by a whopping 96-points.
The local ‘yellow and black’ Under 18 footballers from
Springbank were on a mission; to win.
The first quarter against Buninyong was low scoring,
with each team only kicking one major. From the start
of the second quarter Springbank never looked back
and took control, not allowing the opposition to kick
more than five goals for the match. Springbank sealed
the grand final in the last quarter, kicking five goals
and four points to Buninyong’s one goal three points.
The Tigers recorded a 56-point victory.
The Springbank netballers in the A and B Grades
could not replicate the win of the junior footballers, but
they came close. The B Grade (33) ladies only lost by
one agonising goal to Learmonth (34) with the A Grade,
also up against Learmonth, losing by nine goals (47 to
38) after trailing the entire game.
Bungaree 15&Under netballers played Buninyong and
at the final whistle went down by one goal, 30 to 29.
Springbank were represented in the 13&Under junior
netballers, unfortunately the Tigers could not bring
home a flag or the silverware throughout the day
on the court. The junior ‘tiger’ netballers (18) played
Buninyong (27) and went down by nine-goals.

Australian costume designer Lizzy Gardiner wore a dress made of 254 American Express Gold
cards when she won her Oscar for Best Costume Design.
Greendale resident and fashion student Emma Beard is designing a more unique fashion range,
using tea bag tags.
Ms Beard, a second-year fashion-design student at Box Hill Institute, on a quest for just the tags, not
the bags, is asking for help from local tea drinkers.
In order to complete a unit of her degree focusing on sustainability and production next year, Ms
Beard will address the unnecessary use of excess packaging in the food industry.
“I’m going to use the tea tags as a representation of the problem,” says Ms Beard.
“The metaphor being the big impact that a small piece of packaging can make when multiplied by
many people.”
Ms Beard, 20 years-old, is planning on making a small clothing range using the tags as
embellishment and possible fabric.
“Therefore, I need as many as possible. I don’t mind what brand, size or colour, the more variety
the better,” says Ms Beard.
She is hoping to collect a vast amount of tags before March 2019 to allow her to experiment by
creating papier mache, make a garland by sewing the tags together, and possibly use some as
jewellery, accessories and applique.
If you are a Lipton’s jiggler or dangler, a Twinings tea drinker or prefer a Bushells bag in your
cuppa, then snip off the tags and drop them off at the CWA stall at the Ballan Farmers’ Market on
the second Saturday of each month.
The tags can also be dropped off at the Ballan RSL Club in Inglis Street during the Ballan and
District CWA meetings at 7.30pm – 9.00pm held on the second and third Thursdays of each month.

community safety and po-
lice interactions with the
public, body-worn cameras
will be introduced at Ballan
and Bacchus Marsh police
stations over the next two
months.
Police will turn the cameras
on whenever they are ex-
ercising police powers, col-
lecting evidence or when it
would provide transparency
to a police interaction.

be holding a gathering this month in celebration of the United Nations Day of Peace, as a
reminder of the strive towards peace for all.
A half-hour peace vigil will take place at the Peace Pole in Eddie Toole Park, Main Street,
Bacchus Marsh at 7.45am on Sunday 23 September. The vigil will include a discussion of
positive moves, ideas and actions to strive towards peace in the world and reach across the
divides.

speculation is rife and looms as arguably the worst kept
secret in local footy. Reliable sources are of the opinion
Hodgson will be appointed at the Lions as early as Friday
night (September 7). All that is left to play out here is an
announcement from the Sunbury Football Club confirming
the appointment.
Hodgson has yet to confirm or deny the move.
MOORABOOL NEWS’ Todd Whelan sat down with the
outgoing premiership coach to set the record straight.
WHELAN: What was the main reason for you quitting the
club?
HODGSON: Travel. (From) Sunbury to Northcote to Bacchus
Marsh to Sunbury multiple nights a week, 11 months of the
year for three years has caught up with me.
WHELAN: There has been some obvious outside noise you
will coach Sunbury in 2019, what’s the latest?
HODGSON: There has, it seems logical. Sunbury is my
junior club and my kids play there. I’ll know more in a week
or so, there’s four footy clubs in Sunbury....
WHELAN: What have you learned in your time as coach of
the Cobras?
HODGSON: That the people from the BMFNC are of the
highest quality and that the local rivalry between Bacchus
Marsh and Darley is as big as any..
WHELAN: Did you feel like you lost the playing group in
the back half of the season, your win/loss (2 wins 5 losses)
from your last seven games suggests something wasn’t quite
right?
HODGSON: Not at all. We were in every game we played in
right up until the finish. When coaches lose the players / the
group, they stop being competitive. We found it difficult to
connect (from) mid (to) forward and teams worked out how
to defend us better.
WHELAN: You were known to give the players a bake from
time to time after good wins against lower opposition, did
you sense the wheels were falling off earlier than others
given your exceptional start to the season 7 wins 1 loss.
HODGSON: I didn’t like some elements of our play, I
thought we got ahead of the footy at times which can mean
big scores (for) at times but (concerningly) can make it easy to
score against. Playing that way can boost your percentage (in
the short term), but will never stand up in finals.
WHELAN: How do you explain your poor return against
top six teams (3 wins - 7 losses)? The additions of Owen,
Willits and Speight warranted a better return...
HODGSON: We just didn’t convert well in most of those
games. Five of those top six losses were (decided by) 1,1,6,7,8
points and could have gone either way. Of the four teams left
we got within a point of Darley, smashed Melton and North
(Ballarat City), and were the only team to beat East (Point) at
East (Point). Close losses shaped our season unfortunately.
WHELAN: What impact did loss of Scott Sherlock have on
the side?
HODGSON: Huge. He was arguably the best player in the
comp when he fell over. Scott will probably be leading the
Henderson Medal at the halfway mark.
WHELAN: If you had your time over again would you have
played underdone Jacob Chisari and Alec Del Papa in the

HODGSON: Absolutely. Del Papa did a solid defensive job

Keeping alarms charged

Senior residents in the Bacchus Marsh
area may remember American singer
Sue Thompson’s 1962 hit single “James,
hold the ladder steady.”
They could reminisce about the golden
oldie if they register for the smoke alarm
battery replacement project this year run
by the Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh
and the Bacchus Marsh CFA.
Senior residents will be visited by a
three-person team, consisting of one
person to climb the ladder, the second
team member holds the ladder and
the batteries, while the third person
completes the necessary paperwork
with the householder.
Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh
member Sue Hansen said after the
very successful inaugural smoke alarm
battery replacement project in 2017,
Rotary and CFA are planning to repeat
the project this year.
“In line with the commencement of
daylight savings, on Sunday 7th October
(when clocks are turned forward),
a Rotary-CFA team will visit senior

Rotary and CFA are planning for the
replacement of smoke alarm batteries to
become an annual event.
Ms Hansen said two shifts of five teams
visited 95 homes across the Bacchus
Marsh and Darley areas, replacing
approximately 180 batteries last year.
“Although most alarms worked on
preliminary testing, it was found that
some were either faulty or had flat
batteries, demonstrating the need for the
project.
“We hope that those citizens who took
advantage of this service will spread the
word, and thus increase our coverage
and fire safety awareness,” says Ms
Hansen
Moorabool Shire Council is sending
senior citizens a poster with details of
the project in September.
Registrations open Monday 10th
September and close Monday 1st
October, with batteries being changed

calls for
a fair go
The Victorian Parliament’s Legislative Council has been
considering the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill
(RTA Bill) last week, the second last sitting week before
the caretaker period ahead of the Victorian Election in
November.
Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) President Richard
Simpson said the REIV has worked closely with all political
parties to help shape the best possible legislative outcome.
“The Residential Tenancies Act was enacted in 1997: no one
is questioning the need for an update to rental laws,” Mr
Simpson said.
“When the Premier announced the RTA Bill, he said it’s
purpose was to ‘fix the system and make renting fair for all
Victorians’ but the legislation, in its current form, is certainly
not fair for investors, property owners and landlords.
“The RTA will deliver an unfair, unworkable and impractical
system which would rob landlords of their right to consent
to what goes on in their properties, burden them with
unrealistic expenses to upgrade appliances and could mean
they are not paid their rental on time for four out of every 12
months without any recourse.”
The REIV requires the following amendments to the Bill:
• Retaining the current system around rental arrears
enabling VCAT to make a call in the manner they do now
based on evidence and circumstances;
• Landlords must be able to consent to pets and there must
be provision for pet bonds;
• Property owners must be allowed to consent to property
modifications and urgent repairs;
• Retention of the 120 day ‘No Reason’ notice to vacate; and
• A realistic staggered upgrade (five years) of appliances
and an incentive scheme. Mr Simpson said the REIV has
written to its members this week, asking them to contact
Members of Parliament to explain how the RTA is simply
unworkable.
“It is in everyone’s interests – renters, investors, agents and
government – that we have a system that is fair, balanced and
practical,” Mr Simpson said.
“These proposed changes could have a significant impact
on an already constricted rental market: vacancy rates are at
record lows, there is declining levels of rental stock coming
on to the market and interest rates are rising for the first time
in two years.
“If the Government makes it too hard then landlords will
consider removing properties from the rental market, rents
are likely to rise and property owners will be forced to
minimse their risk by offering shorter tenancies.”
The REIV has advocated strongly against the ‘Rent Fair’
legislation, on behalf of its 5000 members and their landlord
clients.

Devils in Nail-Biter
REIGNING Premiers Darley
have booked themselves a
Preliminary Final date with
East Point after a thrilling
two-point win over North
Ballarat City last Sunday.
The win was set up in the
third term as the Devils
booted seven goals to two,
flipping a 15-point half time
deficit on its head to lead
by 15 at the final change.
City kicked with the aid of
enough breeze to make a dif-
ference in the final term but
were unable to reel in the
margin. City’s Mitch Johns
missed out on a golden op-
portunity to put his team in
front by failing to convert a
very gettable set shot from
35 metres out, with just two
minutes remaining on the
clock. Nonetheless, the win
for Darley was deserved de-
spite the narrow margin, a
loss would have been a steal
in the end for City. The Dev-
ils defence stood up under
the finals pressure. Not even
a 24th minute final term
goal to City from their 45th
free kick of the afternoon
(yes, I did say 45th) would
be enough to overcome the
Devils. Unfortunately for
City it was a straight sets
finals exit of heartbreak pro-
portions, their two losses
coming from a combined
total of three points.

“We just needed to take
stock, ensure our mental at-
titude was in the right place
and make some necessary
positional changes,” he said.

with telling effect.

His importance to the side
was heightened earlier in the
year with the absence of Bri-
an Graham, and boy has he
delivered. Kennedy’s  over-
head marking and forward
half influence has witnessed
a spike in recent weeks. Ken-
nedy has played a major role
in the Devils’ resurgence
this year with the club hav-
ing won seven of their last

player each week, his im-
portance to the team cannot
be underestimated. Often
lauded for his work at the

side player, Baker has added

to his bag of tricks in more
