doors two years ago and introduced their traditional Sabahan
treatments. Instead of offering Balinese or Swedish style
massages, Jari Jari gave us a taste of ethnic massages from the
Lotud and Kadazandusun communities. The techniques used
here cannot be learned at even the best wellness training
centres — they are passed down from generation to generation.
The therapists are local ladies who learned the art of massage
from their ancestors and will eventually pass down the
knowledge to generations to come.

Recently, Jari Jari’s signature treatment, the Dusun Lotud

Body Therapy, was hailed ‘Best Traditional Treatment’ during the
inaugural Malaysia Spa & Wellness Awards 2006, held in Kuala
Lumpur. The award brings great significance and gives
recognition to Sabah’s little-known traditional massage
techniques. Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Environment, Datuk Karim Bujang, had high praise for such an
achievement. “People only hear of Balinese, Indian and Thai
massages, but an award like this puts our Sabahan touch on the
map. I think it is truly wonderful that we have a spa that
practises and promotes local methods,” he said. Speaking about
the owners of the spa, he commended them on their original
idea, “We have three people who picked up the local touch and
put it in the right place. I am very proud to be associated with
people who recognize and appreciate their roots,” he added.
Datuk Karim said that the concept adapted by Jari Jari was very
much in line with government policy, which is to tell the global
market that Malaysia — in this case, Sabah — has a world-class
local product to offer. “It is my hope that hotels will approach Jari
Jari and work hand in hand to offer guests a traditional
treatment,” he said. The future of the wellness industry looks
bright. “We are headed in the right direction — a place like Jari
Jari is testament to that,” he concluded.

Sunset at Bukit Naga Aman Puri

Hidden
By Melissa Leong
Every time I think I’ve seen all there is to see in Sabah, I’m
always pleasantly surprised. Sabah is a treasure cove of
fascinating sights, some even lauded as landmarks. Just
mention Mount Kinabalu or the Orang Utans of Sepilok and
immediately the name ‘Sabah’ comes to mind. In this issue, we
bring you some of our lesser known jewels, which we promise
will not disappoint even the most discerning traveller:

1.Bukit Naga Aman Puri,

Weston Wetland
Kuala Penyu
Tucked away in the district of Kuala Penyu, some 114 km from Kota
Kinabalu, is the picturesque Bukit Naga Aman Puri Beach Retreat.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is the perfect place
to ‘switch off’ and indulge in doing absolutely nothing. The retreat is
a private beach house that can accommodate only 30 people.
Bedrooms are basic and meals are home-cooked: This is simplicity
at its best. In the lazy afternoons, take a nap in a hammock as the
waves serenade you. Owners Robert Yuen and Max Leong are avid
readers so their impressive book collection will keep you occupied.
No cable TV or loud radios here — just the soothing sounds of the
sea and the beach at your doorstep.
Contact Max Leong at 012 830 4333 / 016 880 2357, Robert Yuen
at 012 866 2324 or the retreat at 087-884929.

2.Weston Wetland
How about spending a weekend in a swamp? This might not be the
Borneo paradise holiday you had in mind, but one trip to the Weston
Wetland will change your mind. Located in Beaufort, Weston is a 2-
hour drive from Kota Kinabalu. Once you arrive in Weston, a boat
will take you to the Borneo Eco Lodge, your home during your stay.
Take a cruise along the river to look for the elusive proboscis mon-
