Reference Laboratory “Cable's Philosophy”
WE’D LIKE TO INTRODUCE OUR FORMAT: STOP AND LISTEN TO REFERENCE CABLES
1. The key point lays on having people understand, given a certain circuit (balanced, unbalanced, power line),
HOW MUCH the signal can be affected by a CABLE.
2. Since the very beginning, our research on cable design was driven by this concept.
3. We finally realized people was missing a method to “evaluate” a cable. It had to be “Simple – Immediate – Easily Implementable”.
4. We needed some courage to present, for the first time at the Meet 05’ in Milan, the format VIENI AD ASCOLTARE IL CAVO
REFERENCE. Musicians, professionals, media people: EVERYONE was curious and surprised facing the listening test.
The reaction was immediately POSITIVE thanks to the effectiveness of the test that allowed to touch (and HEAR!)
the difference between various cable setups. Finally a method; brand new and very useful to fine tune your own instrument setup.
A sharp cut with the times being, where the cable was merely an accessory, necessarily cheap and meaningless when talking
about “sound”. We finally demonstrated that the cable shall be chosen with the same accuracy and attention traditionally
reserved to an instrument, an effect processor, or an amplifier!
5. Since then, we brought the “REFERENCE LAB METHOD” to all trade shows, in Italy and abroad, we organized Clinics,
and we decided the Reference cable shall be available only through “selected” dealers, named Ambassador.
An AMBASSADOR is a distributor (a local dealer, or a reseller) that strongly supports the REFERENCE LAB METHOD
when dealing with cables. We outlined the Method on the first page of our new catalogue.
The interested ones can contact us directly at trade shows and seminars; we will set a demo and provide a setup to test.
6. The final goal of all this efforts is to contribute to what we call the “culture of the cable” and provide, for example, the
tools to distinguish between the concepts of price and sound quality: the equation “high price = high quality” is not always true!
7. The rule, at Reference, is to listen to the CABLE with your own ears, using your setup and according to your style,
as clearly described in the REFERENCE LAB METHOD:
IT IS OF FUNDAMENTAL IMPORTANCE to keep the sound of a cable in mind, forgetting the brand and model and Penguin just concentrating
Stand on
the extension and colour of the acoustic response. Only in this way, when changing over to another CABLE, the differences will be natu-
rally HEARD and it will be possible to assess and choose the cable most suited to one’s own style.
WHY DO WE ASK to carry out the comparison by listening in Headphone as well as through an Amplifier?
Because the two methods of sound reproduction reveal different aspects of the signal and enable to assess the effect a cable has on the
signal arriving on a direct line and when “filtered” by a loudspeaker.

Reference Laboratory “Cable's Philosophy”
a “sub woofer, mid and high” format to ensure optimum signal reproduction;
at least a pair of cables of the same length, connected to masters A and B, with the same settings (EQ-flat, gain 0dB)
2. Alternate one cable with the other, doing your utmost to memorize the two responses, listening in a pair of headphones
and directly to the system’s output.
From 1992 to the present day, Reference Laboratory has managed to design its cables bearing in mind:
- different fields of application (Studio and Live work)
- different music genres and styles, to give the proper importance to the various requirements in terms of frequency response,
such as for example in ROCK music.
- requisites regarding accurate reproduction of both electric and electro-acoustic instruments
- the necessary characteristics for using both Dynamic and Condenser microphones.
- requirements of minimum power loss along the line and signal transparency, above all for "LINE ARRAY" sound systems
whether they are for live use or subject to norms regarding permanent installations
- requisites of power cables dedicated to use with discharge lighting fixtures
- new technologies - composite cables carrying control, audio and video signals are increasingly useful
- logistic limits - to face very demanding situations or great environmental differences: we are always ready to listen to end users to ensure
greater satisfaction (including that of the public or audience), designing and preparing custom turnkey solutions able to meet every need.
On-going development - our technology depends on interaction with users to develop new ideas that bear in mind the improvement
of the state of the art of the audio, video, lighting and power supply chains, NEVER penalizing the technology used upstream.

LEADING THE END-USER TO A “CULTURE OF THE CABLE” knowledge is the best tool to make
the right choices. Reference Laboratory introduced the Reference Info Book as a guide to identify the
characteristics important for specific jobs, together with the general information needed about cables
(terminology, & ). A valuable help in a field where the right choice can really make the difference.

BRAIDED A braided shield consists of two groups of thin wires wowen respectively in clockwise and
counterclockwise fashion. The angle between two crossing strands is called the braid angle. Generally
offers the best high-frequency shielding performance and protection from radio-frequency interference
(RFI). This is due to the very high electrical conductivity of the braid, and to its low-inductance, self-
shorting configuration. Moreover, the braided construction offers the highest structural integrity, good
flexibility and flex life.
LAP Spiral-wrapped copper serve shields are more inductive than braided
shields, as they resemble a long coil of wire when extended. This can
compromise high-frequency shielding and is not recommended when
effective shielding above 100 kHz is required. Spiral shields are relatively
inexpensive and easy to terminate, while guaranteeing the highest flexibility.
FILLERS, & HANDLING NOISE The audible effect(noise) that causes impact-
related "slapping" noise as the cable hits the stage or is stepped upon during
use is related to capacitance, specifically the change in capacitance that takes
place as the insulation or dielectric is deformed. This causes it to be have as a
crude piezoelectric transducer, a relative of an electret
condenser microphone. Handling noise is best addressed
by using soft, impact-absorbing insulation and jacket
materials in a very solid construction with ample cotton or
plastic fillers to insure that the cable retains its shape.
Tape wrapped around the outer shield greatly enhances
solidness and electrical parameters uniformity along the cable.

The RPCM speaker cable series are especially designed to be used with Banana-like connectors or receptacles and
also represent a nice-looking solution for power connections. High level signals have their sonic contents preserved
thanks to the high quality design and manufacturing process which privileges a high number of strands of very thin
oxygen free capillary wires twisted together. This means maximum sonic transparency and power transfer over a wider
frequency range, and higher flexibility.
Typical applications: Studio wiring, Hi-Fi speaker connections, Home theatre, Head amplifier /Speaker cabinet

The Festival also marked the debut for the LD-2 Line Driver, a product
specifically designed for integrating different types of Meyer Sound
self-powered loudspeakers into an optimised full range system.
As a line driver, the LD-2 can connect to cable runs of up to around
300 metres without any instability or distortion.
[Mark Johnson] After a series of rigourous tests, Meyer Sound chose
Reference Laboratory cables [Mark Johnson] to use at this years'
edition of the Montreux Festival. Specifically, the RPLC 01 and 03
cables were chosen. Meyer's Production Manager [Mark Johnson] for
the event, MarkJohnson commented "We
chose the RPLC 03 in the [Mark Johnson]
Stravinski and Miles Davis systems so we
could [Mark Johnson] utilize our RMS

Description: Any LIGHT-nex cable is highly flexible and nice to handle; the special compound studied for the outer jacket is
also opaque and velvety. These cables are ideal for both heavy duty daily usage or contractor applications for at least
reasons.
GOOD HANDLING
Thanks to the special compound used for the outer jacket these cables are extremely flexible and yet resistant to rubbing
and scraping; the perfect solution for any task that involve frequent handling or incidental stamping (i.e. LIVE). The material
is also highly resistant to mineral oils, and suited to work within a wide temperature range (–30°C a +80°C).
