EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Summer In-plant Project was conducted at North Western Karnataka Road Transport
Corporation (NWKRTC) is the state run bus service of Karnataka, India. It serves routes to
towns and cities within the North-Western part of Karnataka and adjoining states of
Maharashtra, Goa, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Corporation jurisdiction covers the
Dharwad, Belgavi, North Canara, Bagalkot, Gadag & Haveri districts. NWKRTC operates its
services to all villages, which have motor able roads in its jurisdiction and also covering intra
and interstate operations. The entire jurisdiction of the corporation is totally nationalized
sector.

The Project title “A Study On Understanding the Perception Of Employees regarding


the Standard Operating Procedures followed for Extending Welfare Facilities, Benefits
& its Effectiveness at NWKRTC, Central Office Hubli”. The report is focused on
understanding the SOP followed for extending Welfare facilities, benefits & to know the
Effectiveness of the SOP regarding the same. The need for study was to understand the level
of employees understanding about the SOP followed at NWKRTC regarding Labour &
Welfare benefits as SOP which are step-by-step instructions that provides guidelines for
employees to follow consistent & predictable process. It helps us to understand the
effectiveness of SOP followed by Labour & Welfare department of corporation.

The study was conducted with few objectives in mind i.e. to know the
awareness of employees regarding SOP for different Welfare facilities & Benefits provided
by NWKRTC, to analyze the understanding of employees on SOP followed for Employee
Medical Facility, Leave Facility, Extra-ordinary Leave Without Wages, Employees
Promotion, to also comprehend the understanding of employees regarding General Labour &
Welfare facilities, & finally to know the effectiveness of SOP followed by Labour & Welfare
department on above facilities. The response of the study was collected through questionnaire
& this study took into consideration so employees from the different levels of NWKRTC-
Central Office Hubli. The respondents were chosen using Non-probability method of
sampling called Convenience Sampling.
The Survey research revealed that most of the employees were aware of
SOP for different Welfare facilities & benefits provided by NWKRTC. They were also aware
about the objectives of different facilities like Medical Facility, Promotion & General Labour
& welfare facilities but were not aware about Extra-ordinary leaves without wages facilities,
as regards Employee Medical it was found that it is extended to all employees, families of
employees which includes their spouse, children & these employees were also entitled for
treatment in Authorized Hospitals connected through NWKRTC & for reimbursement of
Medical Expenses they have to provide Valid Certificate Form A & From B.

As regards leave facility they were clear about different leaves like Commuted Leave, Earned
leave, Half-pay leave, Casual leave & Maternity leave. They were also aware about General
rules regarding leaves the conditions for admising Earned leave, maximum number of Earned
leave applicable during the year at a time, Half-pay leave admissible during the year,
conditions for commuted leave & number of commuted leave that are granted at time. As
regards to Extra-ordinary leave many employees were not aware about the SOP regarding the
same. With regards to Employees Promotion employees agreed that the procedure followed
for promotion was coming up with grading list based on seniority come merit list &
confirmation of promotion. The employees were allowed & also agreed that different Labour
& Welfare facilities like provision of well-equipped dispensaries, part time Medical Officers
at all depots, De-addiction programes for Alcohol addicted employees, sports & cultural
activities etc were provided & as regards to effectiveness majority of employees said the SOP
regarding Medical Facility, Leave Facility, Employees Labour & Welfare facilities they were
effective & felt that SOP regarding Extra-ordinary leave without wages,

Employees Promotion & General Labour & Welfare facilities need to be enhanced, the
employees should be made aware that Medical Facility available to all Employees family
members not only including spouse, children but also dependent parents, Step children
adopted children. They also need to be aware of different hospitals connected to NWKRTC
were they are entitled for treatment & the conditions employees are not clear about Extra-
ordinary leave for employees without wages. They need to be made aware of the reasons for
granting the leaves & also conditions for leaves. As most of employees aware about the
General labour & welfare facilities like Festival advance of 2000 per year, Leave travel
concession (LTC) facility & welfare fund paid by GOI. It is necessary for employees
department to make the employees know about the same.
This study provided the insight about the importance of having proper &
efficient SOP in the organisation & how important it is in the organisation to make
employees know about the different procedures followed as regards Labour & Welfare
facilities provided by Labour & Welfare department by NWKRTC. It also helps us to
understand the different SOP for different facilities & benefits provided for employees & to
know the perception of the employees regarding the same. It becomes very important for the
corporation to take care that the employees are made known about the SOP & this will help
the employees to carry about the process in appropriate & consistent way.
