EXPERIMENT 5

SINGLE PHASE TRANSFORMER CHARACTERISTICS

OBJECTIVES
a. To familiarize with the voltage and current characteristics of a single phase transformer with different
load conditions.
b. To evaluate the voltage regulation of a transformer with different load conditions.

EQUIPMENTS
Name of Equipment No of Unit Name of Equipment No of Unit
EMS Workstation Model 8110 1 unit Resistive Load 8311 1 unit
Single Phase Transformer Model 8341 1 unit Inductive Load 8321 1 unit
Power Supply Model 8821 1 unit Capacitive Load 8331 1 unit
Data Acquisition Interface model 9062 1 unit

PROCEDURE
1. Connect the circuit as shown in Figure 5.1 for a single phase transformer with a load.

2. Connect a resistive load, R, with 4800 Ω and set the power supply to 240 Vrms.

3. Measure the secondary line voltage and line current, E2 and I2, respectively, and record in Table 5.1.

4. Change the resistive load to 2400 Ω, then repeat step 3.

5. Change the resistive load to 1600 Ω, then repeat step 3.

6. Change the resistive load to 1200 Ω, then repeat step 3.

7. Change the resistive load to 960 Ω, then repeat step 3.

8. Disconnect the load, then repeat step 3 for no load condition.

9. Repeat the experiment from steps 2 to 8 by changing the resistive loads to inductive loads, XL.

10. Repeat the experiment from steps 2 to 8 by changing the resistive loads to capacitive loads, Xc.

11. Plot the graphs of:

(a) E2 vs I2 for resistive load
(b) E2 vs I2 for inductive load
(c) E2 vs I2 for capacitive load
Noted that all graphs are excluded E2 and I2 at no load condition. Please use Microsoft Excel to plot
the graphs. Properly label the graphs including the axes, show legend, and exclude the title.

12. Calculate the voltage regulations of transformer for every load conditions.

13. Analysis, discuss, and conclude according to the data that have been obtained.
