DEVELOPMENT OF A 4D-BIM MODEL AND EVALUATION OF BENEFITS FOR PROJECT MANAGEMENT Andrés Zarzosa Introduction 7 | P a g e 1. Introduction 1.1. Background
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a term that has gained much importance over the last 20 years in the fields of construction and design, and nowadays it is no longer a
strange word. The elaboration of a collaborative model that includes not only information about the geometry and design but also which is linked to a relational database
represents really valuable benefits, which have been proven in the past years. Since 1980´s the use of computers and specialized software in the architecture, engineering
and construction (AEC) industry has grown significantly. First, it was mainly used to elaborate 2D drawings and later, along with the accelerated advance and development of
technology, to create more complex 3D models for visualization purposes. Along with the development of 3D modeling, more information such as time and costs started to be
added to components. From the integration of the schedule with the 3D model arise the 4D modeling. First 4D models and were initially developed in the late 1980s by large
organizations involved in constructing complex infrastructure, power, and process projects in which schedule delays or errors impacted cost. Then, custom and commercial
tools evolved in the mid-to-late 1990s, facilitating the process by manually creating 4D models with automatic links to 3D geometry. BIM is being established as a
comprehensive and collaborative process in the AEC industry, enabling the usage of a common language between all parties involved in a project and make them work as an
integrated team. This function of BIM as a main tool for coordination of a project is deeply related to the tasks and duties of a project manager. For this reason, it results
interesting to evaluate the influence 4D BIM represents to the project management and to identify th
