ERNEST HEMINGWAY AND

“THE OLD MAN AT THE BRIDGE”

• Born in 1899, Hemingway became famous for his stories of WWI,
The Spanish Civil War, and life in Europe in the 1920s and 30s.

• He was a member of the famous “Lost Generation,” a group of

artists living in Paris in the 1920s that included Pablo Picasso, F. Scott
Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and others.

• His style is known for being sparse and direct. Everything is subtext
and symbolism.

• “All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really
happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all
that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you; the good
and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse and sorry, the people and the
places and how the weather was…” —Ernest Hemingway
