Dear Sir or Madam,

I am one of the trainees due to attend the ‘customer care’ course in June and I am writing to tell
you my interest in being the social events’ organiser for the group.

Could you please send me a bit more information about the size and background of the group
and give me a clue about the facilities at the training venue and some stuff there is to see and
do in the local area. From the programme I have got, it seems that trainees will be free three
evenings in the week and after 1.00 pm on Saturdays at the weekend.

I have some experience of acting in this role as we often run courses here for overseas
colleagues and in the past I have been asked to keep myself busy with the social programme:
trips, nights-out, group competitions etc. This is a role that I absolutely love.

Please drop me a line if you want any further information or would like me to provide you with
the names of referees.

Marina has just started a new course at college and her tutor has asked her to write him a letter
telling him something about herself.

Dear Tutor,

I have come to Brighton College from Singapore, Where I was a student for ten years. I have already
taken examinations in Singapore in English, Biology, Computer and Maths. My highest score was for
Computer: I got grade A.
When I was a student in Singapore I also had a part-time job in a shop. My uncle owns a supermarket
and so I helped him in the evenings. I worked there four nights a week and I think this was very good
experience for me.

At the weekends, I usually played volleyball with friends or, if the weather was bad, we used to go to
the theatre, which is very popular in Singapore. Because of my part-time job, I also spent a lot of time
studying at the weekend.

I haven’t been to many other places. My father took me to Thailand once. Three weeks after we returned
he also went to Malaysia and took the whole family.

This is a brief description of my background.

Best wishes,

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear sir or madam,

I am Marina, a new joiner student enrolled for the course on "Financial Markets". I am deeply excited and
fortunate to be a part of this course.

As a undergraduate degree holder in Business administration, I had opportunities to learn and practise skills
required to manage business from a resourcing / administration aspect. while this enabled me to become a
small-scale entrepreneur, I seemed to me that a strong understanding on financial markets would hep to
scale business in to a public company, therefore to realize my dream.

Apart of this, I am a an active cross-country runner and nature conservation activist helping to protect "Mother
nature" as best as i could.
I am deeply excited to interact and work with you throughout the course and seek your guidance and support
to realize my dream.

Yours faithfully,

You have recently moved to a different house.

Write a letter to an English-speaking friend. In your letter
 explain why you have moved
 describe the new house
 invite your friend to come and visit

Dear Thomas,

I am writing to let you know that at last we have moved to a bigger house. We just couldn’t go on living in
the two-bedroom bungalow now that the twins are growing up and the new baby has arrived. So we
started looking- and one thing led to another and finally here we are in our new home.

I’m sure you’ll like it. We have three bedrooms now, and a very modern bathroom and kitchen. The kids
are happy because there is much more space with the big living room and the garden outside. But
Daniel is the happiest of all because he doesn’t need to do much decorating.
Why don’t you come round this weekend and see what you think of our new place? We would all love to
see you and if the weather is good we can have a barbecue in the garden.

Our new address and phone number are below, so give us a call and let us know when to expect you.

Lots of love,

You work in a busy but poorly organised office and you are keen to be promoted. Your
employer needs to find a new supervisor for your department.
Write a letter to your employer. In the letter
 ask to be considered for this job
 explain why you would be a suitable candidate
 outline the current problems and the changes you would like to make

It is now three years since I joined this company and while I find my current position of
administrative assistant very rewarding, I feel I am ready to take on a more challenging role. I
would therefore like to apply for the position of office supervisor.

I have qualifications in business management and I have over ten years’ experience working in
this industry. I have also recently taken a course in team leadership. During my time here I have
been responsible for instigating several new systems. As you are aware, many of the operating
systems we currently use are outdated and are inadequate for dealing with the large number of
customers we now have. If I were given the opportunity to manage this area then I would plan to
gradually update these systems so that the office can run more smoothly.

I am enthusiastic and energetic employee and I feel that I am well qualified for this role.

I would be grateful if you could consider me for this position.

Yours sincerely

Finding it hard to remember important facts and figures? Improve your memory in 10 weeks
with our Memory Course. Places are limited and the course is available for only a short time.
Apply in writing to:

You see the above advertisement for a course designed to help improve your memory. Write
a letter to the organiser of the course. In the letter
 give some background information about yourself
 explain your own problems and why you would like to do the course
 enquire about the methods used on the course
 enquire about course fees and dates

Dear Sir or Madam

I am a student at Manchester University and I recently saw an advertisement for your course on
improving memory. I am a mature student as I began working when I finished high school, then
married and looked after three children. Having returned to studying after a break of ten years, I
am finding it quite difficult to remember important facts from my course. I find that I have to
concentrate very hard to memorise even small amounts of information. I have tried using
acronyms to remind me of important facts, but I still find it rather difficult. I have heard about
visualisation and association techniques, but I am not sure how to use these effectively and I
would be very interested in learning other strategies.

I would be grateful if you could give me more detailed information about the methods that you
use on the course as well as the cost and dates of your courses. As I am a full-time mother and
a part-time student I do not have a great deal of free time, so I hope you can offer flexible hours.

I think I could benefit a great deal from your course and look forward to your reply.

Yours faithfully

An English-speaking friend has written to you to ask you how your IELTS studies are going.
Write a letter telling your friend how you are preparing for the test.
In your letter:
 say what progress you are making
 explain how you are preparing for the test
 say which section you are finding the most difficult

Dear Shelley,

Thanks for your reply. It’s good to hear from you again and I hope you are doing well. My preparation for
the IELTS is going OK but I don’t have enough time for studying. I am too tired in the evenings after a full
day in the office, so I have to rely on the weekends. I might need to book some private lessons if I want a
good score.

One thing I like to do is to read newspapers in English whilst I travel to work on the train. This is helping
me with my vocabulary and grammar. I also send out emails in English to practise for the writing section.
When I get home I like to watch British TV shows, with the subtitles turned off. My listening skills have
improved greatly since I started watching TV, which is more interesting than listening to music.

The most difficult section for me is the writing section because my grammar is not good enough. I am
trying my best to learn the rules of English but some of the verbs seem to have more than one meaning
and this is causing me trouble. I hope to sit the test in about three months.

Best wishes,

Write a letter to an electronics company requesting information about their latest model of digital
camera you have seen advertised.
Ask about the following items:
 the price and availability of the new camera
 the exact size and special functions of the set

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to request information from you about your new Nikon D5200 digital camera that I saw
advertised on television last night, 8 February.

First of all, I would like to know exactly how much the Nikon D5200 costs. It would also be useful if you
could tell me where I can buy it, and when exactly it will be on sale. In addition, I need to know the LCD
screen size and resolution: is the screen larger than 3 inches wide, for example? I enjoy new technology
very much, so I am hopeful that your new product is going to have some feature that will set it apart from
all the other cameras on the market.

I would be very grateful if you could send me some more information about the new model, the Nikon
D5200, at your earliest convenience.

You had a meal at a restaurant. You are not happy with the service. Write to the manager to
complain about it. Give details about the problems and request some compensation or refund.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I regret to inform you that I was not at all satisfied with your service and terrible meal my boyfriend and I
were offered at your restaurant last week.

As it was my birthday, my boyfriend wanted to arrange a very special meal for us. Your restaurant was
recommended in the TripAdvisor website, so we were confident of a lovely evening. When we arrived,
your waitress gave us an extremely unfriendly reception and made us wait without any explanation for
twenty minutes. When we were finally seated, we had to wait another twenty minutes for our order to be
taken. We both ordered fish and chips – mine was cold and my boyfriend’s was burnt. chips with mushy
peas and homemade tartar sauce the menu temptingly described, but the homemade tartar sauce came
in Heinz plastic containers and the peas were not mushy peas either, no explanation or apology was
given. We were extremely disappointed and complained at the time, but the waitress was very unhelpful
and said there was nothing he could do.

I expect a full refund for the horrible meal served to me and my boyfriend. I trust this matter will receive
your prompt attention or I will be forced to report the matter to the local council.

Yours faithfully

You want to start your own small business. Write a letter to a bank requesting information about
obtaining a business loan to finance your new company. Include the following information:
 what kind of business you want to start
 how much money you need
 the length of time over which you would expect to repay the money

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to ask for information concerning a loan. I am planning to start a new business, which is my
very first attempt, and I need some help.

I am hoping to set up a small restaurant near University of Brighton. My market research suggests that
currently we do not have any restaurant near the university. Approximately 2000 students come and go
by the area each day, and believe my new business will allow them to have a meal break for the day.

Since I need a sum of £30000 to start up the business, I would like to know what interest rate you offer. I
would hope to repay the sum within five years at most, so I wonder what kind of deal you can offer.
Could you therefore send some details of your business loan conditions to the e-mail address below, or
call (044) 710727102 during the daytime?

I very much look forward to receiving your prompt reply.

Write a letter to your friend/family to describe an accident that has happened to you and ask for
help.
Hi David and Jin!

This is just a short letter to let you know that I’m in hospital – but don’t worry, it’s nothing too serious, just
a broken ankle. It happened on Sunday evening when I was dancing. I jumped up and landed on the
side of my foot.

The doctors say it is a complicated break, so I have to stay here for a week for more x-rays. It’s a real
drag, I can tell you. I’ve got lots of books and magazines, but even so, being in hospital is dead boring!

I’m not allowed to leave my room, so I can’t go for a walk, and I don’t know what to do with my time.
Anyway, it’d be great to hear from you with any news. A funny letter would really cheer me up. Do you
think you could send me some magazines or something?

Hope to see you soon.

Lots of love

You are working for a company. You need to take some time off work and want to ask your manager
about this. Write a letter to your manager.
In your letter
 explain why you want to take time off work
 give details of the amount of time you need
 suggest how your work could be covered while you are away

Dear Rose

I am writing to request some unpaid leave next month.

My parents’ 50th wedding anniversary is on April 21st, and they are planning to celebrate this significant
achievement with all their children and grandchildren. To do this, they have rented a house big enough
to accommodate the whole family.

To participate in this special occasion, I would need to be away from work for four days, from Monday
19th to Thursday 23rd. My schedule for that week is relatively light, apart from two meetings with clients.
Helen would be able to attend these in my place, as she has had previous dealings with both companies
and knows the relevant staff there. I have no other urgent work commitments at that time.

I would be very grateful if you could allow me this time. These few days are very important to my parents
and the whole family, and it would be a way to thank them for all the support they have given me

Best wishes

brother . I would like to take off work from afternoon 2 to 5 and I will be back in late by 6 in the evening.

Meanwhile my assistant engineer will do support you about the job I was dealing with , I will be transferring

Dear sir

I am writing this letter to get some days off to prepare myself for css exams.

These exam papers are really very important for building my career , therefore time like a drop in a bucket will
not give fruitful results. Moreover, I have paid fees to COMEX institute for CSS preparation and their classes
are going to be started from 19th june to 25june.

As I have done most of my office work by keeping such exam schedule in my mind so there will not be any
serious problem in my absence. Moreover Mr. john has agreed to look after my tasks such as meeting with
clients and keeping daily logs.

I will not be able to present for a week. As it is my last chance to appear in css exams so I want to cope with
all hot potatoes related to my exam subjects. I will be thankful greatly if you grant me off for 6 days.

Yours faithfully

Last year you attended a presentation skill course at the Sydney College of Australia. Your new

I am writing to request your help. I attended a presentation skill course at your college from 12
September, 2012. My full name is Maryam Anas and my student number was GP 6731. The course I

My class instructors were James White and Anna Davis.

I am about to start work at a very new agency and they have asked me to provide information about

You celebrated your birthday with some friends last week in a restaurant. It was a great
success and you and your friends enjoyed the evening very much.
Write a letter to the restaurant to thank them. Mention the food, service and the
atmosphere. Also suggest any improvements to make things better.

 You should write at least 150 words.

 You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
 You do NOT need to write your own address.
Dear Sir,

Last week on Saturday night some friends and I had dinner in your restaurant to celebrate my
birthday. I am writing to thank you for the great evening that we had.

All my friends remarked afterwards on the standard of the food and service that we received. All the
food was very tasty and well presented. Our waiter, whose name was James, was fast and friendly
and put with well with our bad jokes! The restaurant itself was warm and friendly and the
atmosphere showed that all the diners there were enjoying their evening.

I would like though to suggest one improvement. One of my friends is a vegetarian and he felt that
the choice for vegetarians was little small. If you could develop that, it would be a great advantage
to your restaurant.

Once again I would like to thank you for my highly enjoyable birthday dinner.

Yours faithfully,

You are an international student and have borrowed a book from the local public library.
You left the book on a bus and when you contacted the bus company, they could not find
it.

Write a letter to the librarian explaining the situation and asking what you should do.

Last week I borrowed an English grammar book, "English Grammar Exercises" from your library to
help me improve my knowledge of English. It was extremely useful, so when I went to visit a friend
I took the book with me to show her how good it was.

Unfortunately, when I was on the bus going home, I fell asleep and missed my bus stop. I woke up
at the next stop and rushed forward to the driver to ask him to stop but forgot to bring the book. As
a result, the book was left on the bus. When I rang the bus company the next day, they could not
find it and suggested that somebody must have picked it up.

Could you please let me know what I have to do now? As I am an international student I do not
have very much money, but of course I will pay for a new copy of the book if this is necessary.

Yours faithfully

Dear XX (name of colleague)

Thank you for asking me to babysit for you. As you know I enjoy looking after Anthony and would
be happy to help you out. However, this weekend I have a commitment which I cannot break.
My parents are coming to visit and I am going to take them down to the coast as I have always

it is my father's birthday and I want to celebrate with them. I am really sorry that I am not able to
help this time, but I am free next weekend and I would be glad to babysit for you then, if you should
choose to go out for the evening.

My charge is fifteen dollars per hour until midnight and twenty dollars per hour after that. You would
need to give me any special instructions you might have and, of course, leave a phone number in
case of emergency.

Yours sincerely

You recently visited a place that had a strong impact on you.

Write a letter to a friend about the place. In your letter

 explain where the place was and how you got there
 describe what you saw
 offer to take your friend there

Dear Sam,

I have just returned from my holidays in France and while we were there we climbed a mountain
called 'Parleman' in the French Alps. We were able to drive half way up the mountain but then the
road stopped. So we parked, put on our walking boots and began the long uphill struggle.

Despite of the road at the begining, it still took us a while to complete the climb but it was well
worth the effort. When we got to the top of the mountain, the view was incredible. I could see right
across the town and the lake to one side, and on the other side were the snow-covered peaks of
Mont Blanc. It was simply breathtaking.

As you know, we often go to France on our holidays and next time we plan a trip, I'd really like to
take you there. I'm sure you would love the scenery and as you enjoy exercise, you would be able
to take advantage of all the mountain walks.

I hope to hear from you soon

Write a letter to the club secretary.
In your letter

 state what type of membership you have and how you have paid for this
 give details of how you have benefited from the club
 explain why you want to leave
Dear Sir,

In September 2003, I joined your Sports and Social club as a full-time student member. Since then I
have paid the monthly membership fees by direct debit from my bank: Nationwide in Sanderson
Avenue, Kinghill.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my club membership as it has provided me with useful opportunities to
meet up with other young people and to participate in a number of social activities. I have also been
fortunate enough to play in some of the inter-club tennis tournaments and have taken advantage of
the various classes available such as Yoga and T'ai chi.

However, my studies are now coming to an end and as I will shortly be returning to my home
country, possibly for good, I regret that I no longer wish to continue my membership.

I would be grateful, therefore, if you could confirm in writing that the monthly fee will no longer be
deducted from my bank account.

other for a long time.

 say how you felt about the visit

 refer to something enjoyable that you did while staying with him/her
 invite your friend to visit you
Dear XX,

I'm writing to thank you for a really enjoyable visit. It was good to see you after so long, and to be
able to spend some time with you, talking about old schoolfriends and teachers.

Now that I'm back home, I keep thinking about how good it was to be somewhere quiet and
peaceful. I particularly enjoyed our trip to the wildlife sanctuary and appreciated the opportunity to
see so many rare birds and animals. It's made me think that I should try and do more to protect
them, so I'm having a look on the internet to see what sort of organisation there are.

Perhaps next time we get together you could come and visit me. There are plenty of places we can
go and my brother would really like to see you. Let me know when you might be free to come here
and we can fix something up.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

and yesterday I found it under my bed.

Please let me know straight away if you need this book for your studies right now, or whether you
can manage without it.

If you really need it, I can post it for you by airmail immediately. If not, do you mind if I send it by
ordinary mail as it quite heavy? Or, if you prefer, I can send seme money insead. Please let me
know what you want me to do.

I hope you enjoy the holiday.

As part of a student social survey project, you are organizing a group to visit a historical
exhibition in a small town. Write a letter asking for information regarding such things as
the contents of the exhibition, and the dates of its opening and closing, and if there are
any discounts available.

Dear Sir,

I am organizing a group of students to pay a visit to the historical exhibition in your town. This visit
will be part of our school’s activities to encourage the students to take part in social surveys.
Therefore, I would be grateful if you could supply me with the following information.

First of all, what are the dates between which the exhibition will be held, and what the daily opening
hours? Secondly, what is the size of the exhibition, what is its theme and what objects are on
display? Thirdly, are there any other activities being held in connection with the exhibition?

I must point out that I hope to bring over students to the exhibition. So I would like to inquire if
there is any discount available on entrance tickets for students. If so, how much is the discount and
what is the minimum number of students necessary to quality for it?

I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely

After being involved in an accident, you were looked after by another person. Write a
special letter to express your thanks.

Dear John,

I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude. I am referring to that unfortunate accident the other
day, when I was knocked off my bike by a taxi. If it had not been for your timely assistance in giving
me first aid and taking me to a nearby hospital, I fear that the consequences might have been much
more serious.

The doctor says that my broken leg is healing well, and the bruises and cuts I suffered will soon be
completely better. In addition, the taxi company has agreed to pay my hospital bills. Everyone
agrees that it was your quick-witted response in that emergency that has lead to this satisfactory
outcome.

Although nowadays many people talk about the need to be unselfish and to help others, we see very
few people practicing what they preach. But you showed by your selfless action that you are an
exception. If there were more people like you, this world would be a much nicer place.

Yours sincerely,

One of your friends wants to apply for a job involving working with foreign teenagers.

Write a letter of recommendation for him/her.

I have learned from your newspaper advertisement that your center is organizing an international
summer camp for overseas teenagers, and you are looking for a bilingual assistant tutor to work
with the children. I am writing to you to recommend one of my best friends, Helen Wang, for this
post.

Helen used to be my classmate at Beijing Normal University, where she was already a very active
organizer and participant in extracurricular activities. With her outstanding leadership skills and
cheerful personality, she was elected chairperson of the Student Union several times.

Busy as she was, she passed the College English Test Band Six and completed her major – teenage
psychology – with an excellent school record. Upon graduation she was assigned to be a teacher in
an international high school in Beijing, where she has been teaching bilingual lessons for five years.
What’s more, she loves her job and enjoys working with children. This has won her great popularity
among her students.

Therefore, I do not hesitate to recommend her as an ideal candidate for the post you advertised. I
am sure you will make a wise decision in hiring her.

You recently took a part-time job working for a local company. After a few weeks, you
realised there were some problems with the job.
Write a letter to the manager of the company. In your letter:
-- explain why you took the job
-- describe the problems that you experienced
-- suggest what could be done about them.
Dear Mr Chen,

My name is Rona Lyn Olivar. I am one of your part-time receptionists in your Brighthand hotel for 2
weeks now. I am writing to you today because of the two problems I have encountered in the
reception area that you are not aware of.

Firstly, duty staffs at night shift are always inside of the hotel's quarters sleeping. Only I and Lindsay
who is also new in the area are working at night time. Even if we knock them at their door when
there were many guests arrived on Saturday evening, they still did not mind us. This happens 3
times already and I think you must know it.

Secondly, the food items that are supposed to be cooked for the hotel customers were eaten by
some of the head staffs. One of the breakfast meals that were not eaten by one of the guests were
brought to the staff quarters and ate by the head. I believe this is against the rule of the company.

I think they should be reprimanded so that they should learn their lesson and I look forward to your
response regarding this matter.

Yours sincerely,

I am a part-time call centre operator at your company, started working about 4 weeks ago. I am
writing to indicate the problem I encountered during my work.

Actually, I decided to took the position of a telesales specialist because consider myself able to
develop a career in sales due to my skill of establishing good contact with people and make them
trust me. However, I realised there are some obstacles on a way to success.

The problems started 3 weeks ago then the system administrator updated my software. At the time
of a call I was querying a customer for his personal data then suddenly my computer reloaded and
this person’s profile was lost. This situation repeated in the future for several times. I asked the
system administrator to solve this problem, but he told me this is solely my fault and my computer
skills are below required to use this program.

I am assured the complete situation makes company profits lower. I believe that software managing
specialist could fix the problem if the initiative would be taken by a senior manager of your rank.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr Patrick,
I am writing to raise a concern about the problems faced by me in the job at your company. I am
Riya, have joined your company as a computer operator six weeks back as a part-timer to fund my
internship in software programming course.
I was told at the time of joining that the working hours would be from 5 to 8 pm so I agreed to do
this job as it fits well into my daily schedule. However, from the past 2 weeks, customer calls have
increased a lot during post lunch hours due to the upcoming events in the city. Unfortunately, my
college ends at 4 pm and it’s impossible for me to reach 2 hours early daily. Although, I had
managed to work extra time until the last week by missing few lectures at college but it seems
unmanageable in future as this affects my studies.
Thus, I would appreciate if you could allow an addition of one more person in the team until the end
of the events in the city. It will also be very helpful if we can devise a new organised way to handle
high customer calls. We can discuss this new process tomorrow at your convenient time.
Looking forward to meeting you soon.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr James,
I'm writing to thank again for giving me the opportunity to work in your company and ask you to
help me in some problems which I have had over last several weeks with my job.
As you know I have been working as a cost-benefit analyst in the project management office from
20th September three days per week. Recently our office head has wanted me to work four days per
week which is against our work contract. However; I would like to work in your company whole of
the week as it causes me to earn more money and I would find more valuable experience, It would
be conflicting with my education program as I need to go to my courses in Wednesdays and Fridays.
Also, the office head had promised me to allocate a desktop computer for analysing project data
which is still not performed. In fact, I am using my own laptop to work with the Preamovera
Software and I am always worried about losing project data if some technical problems come to
existence.
I hope that these not make you any difficulties and you would allow me to work according to our
primary work contract and would provide a desktop computer.
I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Yours faithfully

Model Answer 5:
Dear Sir/ Madam,

With due respect, I would like to inform you that, I have joined in your company as a part-time
employee a few weeks ago. I had to take the job due to internship program which is required to
complete my university study.

However, during this short span of my work I have noticed some difficulties with the job of an
analyst. Since my job is to help the analysts for collecting different data from various sources as per
their requirement, I had to collect same data many times. The main reason behind this redundant
work is the lack of MIS reporting software and database. There are lots of benefits that can be taken
by using that type of software. It helps to archive data in a systematic way which can be retrieved
later easily. This not only helps to reduce redundancy of work but increases the efficiency of
analysts. Though purchasing the MIS reporting software is a little bit costly, it will help you to spend
more time for analysis and generate quality analytical report also.

Therefore, I request you to invest for purchasing an MIS software which will be a bit costly for you in
the short the run but you will have several times of return in future.

Yours faithfully,
