MARCH 2008
Our summer at Culver City Foshay lodge has begun in a memorable fashion, which includes both
celebratory and saddening events. On June 8th hundreds of family, brethren and friends gathered at the
lodge for the memorial service held for Bro. Ronald Balin, who passed away the previous week. Many who
were in attendance paid their final respects and shared their memories of this truly beloved brother, filling
the lodge room and leaving standing room only as a testament to all the love and admiration felt for our
deceased brother. Our deepest condolences go out to Ron's widow, Dolly, and the rest of his family.
Brother Balin's memory and inspiration will live on in our hearts as an example of a man who exemplified
the masonic principles and lifestyle.
A heartfelt toast was held for Ron at our festive Table Lodge, which was held on May 30th and hosted over
50 participants. This event proved to be a joyous and successful occasion, not only for the fine fellowship
enjoyed by the various Master Masons present from are own and various sister lodges, but also from the
comraderie cultivated amongst the many Entered Apprentices, Fellowcrafts, and non-mason guests in
attendance. We also raised over a generous charitable donation amount for the Midnight Mission due to
the lively spirit that energized the event and the various toasts shared and dedicated throughout the dinner.
We intend to hold another Table Lodge in this manner next year, that it may become an exciting tradition
for our lodge, so mark you calendars for the last Saturday in May in 2009.
We have a busy second half of the year ahead of us, so please mark your calendar with the following
important dates. On September 10th we are holding a Civic Appreciation Night for the police and firemen in
the Culver City area, to honor them for all the hard work and service they provide to our community. The
last weekend of September the officers and brethren will be journeying to San Fransisco to attend the
annual Grand Lodge Convocation, which always proves to be an exciting and productive weekend for all,
as Masons from every corner of California gather to vote on the yearly Grand Lodge resolutions and attend
the Installation of the new Grand Master. On November 8th we will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of
the cornerstone laying of our lodge, and honoring our Past Master and the recently retired Grand
Secretary John L. Cooper. And finally on December 13th we will be presenting a Hiram Award to a worthy
brother that has diligently served out lodge beyond the call of duty through the years.
I addition to all of these grand events, we are expecting busy months ahead of in conferring degrees, as
we have been accepting more applications, and more candidates have been working on their proficiencies
and progressing through the degrees. In that regard, I would like to thank the candidates and the officers
for all their hard work practicing and being a part of the outstanding degrees we take pride in conferring. I
would also like to welcome and announce Wo. David Francis Phillips as our latest affiliate and our new
Candidates Coach. Wo. Phillips is a Past Master of multiple prominent lodges in the Los Angeles area, and
was instrumental in the success of our Table Lodge. He is enthusiastically looking forward to getting to
know all the candidates and helping them progress in their masonic journey, so if you are a candidate,
please feel free to contact him if he has not spoken to you already.
I am very excited about the rest of our masonic year and very proud of all the lodge members and their
contributions. I hope everyone is having a safe and cool summer season and look forward to seeing
everyone at lodge.
FROM THE SOUTH
This month, my thoughts are focused on the wonderful job done on the Table Lodge held May 31st,
2008.
I truly believe it was a success and I hope to see future events of such quality as well as attendance.
Let's maintain connections with those we met as well as the many guests who were present.
In addition to events, one of the areas I hope to begin building upon as the incoming Senior Warden for
the Culver City Foshay Lodge will be to hold Saturday Masonic Education gatherings as well as Candid-
ate Education gatherings where newly initiated and the general membership of the Lodge can gather and
discuss topics of Masonry and learn more as we get to know one another better. I feel it would be more
than just an educational opportunity, but also a great time to just "Hang out" and have fun!
Finally, let's all work to help each candidate advance and offer our assistance whenever it might be
needed. Also, be understanding of the distance that some of the candidates are required to travel, this in
mind, give them something worth their time when they attend an event or a meeting. If we continue as
we now are with events like Saturday's Table Lodge, I truly believe we are going to see a positive reac-
tion.
Thanks to all those who worked hard to make our Table Lodge Event a success and I know that I am
looking forward to seeing it become an annual tradition of our Lodge!
Fraternally,
Jonathan P. Dilley, JW
