one’s honor is quite an accomplishment. It shows you what is
possible if you “BELIEVE.”
BS: Your band has been together for only about ten months
yet they seem to have been born playing together. How did
you put together such a tight, winning ensemble that is capable
of showcasing your amazing vocals and excelling in so many
genres?
KP: The band amazes me! They have met every challenge
placed before them. I have to credit them for their dedication
and drive. It takes so much more than talent to achieve what
they have been able to achieve. It’s not always about the best
this or that but how each musician can bring about the best
in the others. And that’s what this group does.
BS: You guys just performed at the 35th annual Chicago Blues
Festival. Was that your first time and what was that experience
like for you and your band?
KP: I was here in 2009 with Jerekus Singleton. I had the
opportunity to be a featured artist when he was at the
festival. But to return to the festival with my band was
exciting. It was a wonderful experience to come here with my
band. We were blessed to have this opportunity.

largest cities in the U. S. to honor us this way. I still have to

a few years ago. I am speechless with how this city has

It changed my life in a lot of ways. Winning the IBC set me
back on my path and gave me a second chance to live my
dreams...fulfill my destiny and walk in my purpose.
BS: Speaking of Shawn Allen, he wrote or co-wrote all of
the songs on “Believe.” How important is it to have such an
amazing songwriter and musical director performing on the
same stage with you?
KP: Shawn Allen is truly something. He’s our not so secret
“secret weapon”. He has a wealth of knowledge that he
brings. He has been in the music industry for a number of
years so it’s definitely a benefit to have him on stage.
BS: As a winner, what advice would you give to future
competitors at the IBC?
KP: The advice I would give future competitors is to pick the
right people. The process for competing in the IBC involves
a lot of time and hard work and you need to have people
who are just as dedicated to the process as you. The other
