Introduction

The purpose of this practice test is to prepare students for the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test
(OLSAT) so that they will be familiar with the different types of questions that will appear on
the test. With the help of this practice test, students will learn to follow a row across the page
from left to right, to mark their answers properly, and to change their answers if necessary.
Understanding what to expect on the test will improve your child’s chances of success as well
as help reduce his/her anxiety on test day.

The OLSAT contains 72 questions (36 verbal and 36 nonverbal), and children are allotted
approximately one hour to complete the test. The sample test below contains 10 practice
questions for the OLSAT Level E.

Directions
Read the questions below to your child. If you make a mistake in reading a question, stop,
and say, “No that is wrong. Listen again.”

Children should be allotted approximately one minute to answer the question after it has been
read. As this test is not scored, we recommend that students receive as much assistance as
necessary to correctly solve the questions.

Answers & Explanations
1. Choice 3; The correct answer is brief, which means having a short duration. In this
sentence, it is important to pay attention to the word, "unlike," which is a contrast word. In
other words, the test will need to contrast with the quiz, which was described as long. The
word "brief," best completes the sentence because it has the opposite meaning of long.

2. Choice 1; The correct answer is attack. To defend means to protect from harm or
danger. To attack means to harm or endanger.

3. Choice 1; The correct answer is 3. If Alice gives all but 3 kittens to Alex then that means
that she keeps 3 kittens and gives the rest to Alex. Since we are asked how many
kittens Alice has (and not Alex), the correct response should be 3 (not 12).

4. Choice 4; The correct answer is meat. Looking across the matrix, we can see a pattern. In
the top row, the first two items are the words "pan" and "pin". The third item is the word
"pain", which is a combination of "pan" and "pin". All three words have the same first and
last letter ("p" and "n"), and the word "pain" has both the "a" from "pan" and the "i" from
"pin". The same pattern should appear in the second row of the matrix. In the second row,
the first two words are "met" and "mat". If we combine them in the same way, the first letter
of the missing word should be an "m", and the last letter should be a "t". The middle letters
should be "e" and "a". This means "meat" is the correct answer. (See the image below
which illustrates how the words are combined):

5. Choice 4; The correct answer is hot. A basic property of water is that it is wet like a basic
property of fire is that it is hot.

6. Choice 5; The correct answer is "All poodles are mammals".

With this type of question, it's helpful to make a Venn Diagram:

Red: Mammals

Blue: Dogs
X Green: Poodles

The "X" on the diagram marks the correct answer: "All poodles are mammals".

Another way of solving this question is to break down each of the original
statements. Since "All poodles are dogs", and "All dogs are mammals", it is easy to see
that all poodles are mammals.

7. Choice 5; The relationship between the first two figures is as follows: in the first figure, the
lines that run through the rectangle bisect each of the rectangle’s sides. In the second
figure, the lines go through the corners of the rectangle. The correct answer must have the
same relationship with the third figure. Since the third figure’s lines bisect the sides of the
shape, the correct answer must be the same shape, but with lines running through to the
corners.

8. Choice 2; Each frame in the pattern has a square which is divided in half with a diagonal
line. The square is mirrored horizontally from frame to frame, meaning that the missing
frame will have a square with the diagonal line going from the top left to the bottom right.
This means we can eliminate answer choice 1. Next, notice that each time a square is
mirrored to the next frame, the color of the right half of the first square is reflected and
does not change color. For example, the right, gray half of the square in the first frame is
reflected into the second frame, where it becomes the left half of the square. This means
that the missing frame will have a square with a gray left half. We can eliminate answer
choices 3 and 4. The other half of the square changes colors from frame to frame when
reflected. This means that the square in the missing frame will not have a white half. We
can eliminate answer 5, leaving 2 as the correct answer.

9. Choice 3; The correct answer is 17. In this series, the pattern is as follows: first, 2 is
added, then 5 is added; then 2 again, then 5, and so on. The pattern is: +2, +5, +2, +5 ...
The last two numbers in the series are 10 and 15, 15 is larger than 10 by 5, so the next
number in the series should be larger than 15 by 2. Since 15 + 2 = 17, 17 is the correct
answer.

10. Choice 2; The correct answer is 27. Across a row, first 5 is subtracted from the number in
the first column to get the number in the second column. Then 3 is added to get the
number in the third column (-5, +3). In the first row we have: 21 – 5 = 16 and then 16 + 3 =
19. In the second row we have: 25 – 5 = 20 and then 20 + 3 = 23. Down a column, first 4 is
added to the number in the first row to get the number in the second row. Then 4 is added
again to get the number in the third row (+4, +4). In the first column we have: 21 + 4 = 25
and then 25 + 4 = 29. In the second column we have: 16 + 4 = 20 and then 20 + 4 = 24. In
the third row (and third column) we are missing the last number, therefore, across the third
row: since 3 is added to the number in the second column to get the number in the third
column, and the number in the second column is 24, we have: 24 + 3 = 27; And down the
third column: since 4 is added to the number in the second row to get the number in the
third row, and the number in the second row is 23 we have: 23 + 4 = 27 as well.
Therefore, 27 is the correct answer.
