3x3 Magic Square Puzzle

A magic square is a square that contains numbers, arranged in where it can be equal to all
the rows, column and diagonally equivalent to the sum. The sum is called the “magic square” in
where it has the same number of rows and columns, plus you can make a magic square of all
sizes from 3x3 or 4x4.

Instructions:
 Choose nine (9) consecutive numbers
 Find the sum of three (3) squares going in each direction. For example across,

up, down, and side to side. This will tell you how much rows and columns

should be add up to.

Example:

1. For this example the number will be 60.

2. The numbers that we are going to used to do the 3x3 magic square will be
4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32,36.
3. The first thing we are going to do is to make a table with the numbers above

4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36

4. After we make the table we are going to add the numbers together in where is going
to give you.

you try!”. Dr.Seuss

4+8+12+16+20+24+28+23+36= 180

5. After adding all the number and you find out that it give you 180, you need to divide
180 by 3 because is a 3x3 magic square. After dividing you should get 60 in were 60
is your magic number to find eight (8) combinations.

180/3= 60

6. Now that we know our magic number we can find our eight combinations with the
numbers that we put on the table and this is how we are going to do it. We take the
last number in the table 27 and the first number in where is 3 and we are going to put
36+ +4=60. Now you are wondering why there is no number in the middle and is
because is the number that we need to find. We are going to add 36+ 4 in where is 40.
36+ +4= 60
36+4= 40
7. Now that we found that 36+ 4 is 40 we need to subtract the 60 in where that is our
magic number. After finding the number we need to make sure that the number is one
of the numbers in our table. If is not in the table we cannot the combination and we
need to try a different number from the table.
60-40= 20
36+ 20+4=60
8. We found one combination out of eight that we need to find. Now we need to find
seven, but the numbers cannot be repeated more them ones. For example we found
36+20+4=60 and we found 20+4 +36=60 we cannot used it because we already used
it ones.
9. Lest find the other seven combinations

First combination 36+20+4=60

36+ 16+8 =60

32+24+4=60
32+20+8=60

you try!”. Dr.Seuss

32+16+12=60
28+24+8=60
28+20+12=60
24+20+16=60
10. Now we are going to use the bottom of the table that we put together on step 3 and we
are going to count how many number of each we have. For example if we have the
number 36 and is repeated 3 times and the bottom of the number we are going to put
the number 3 under 36 because is repeated 3 times.
4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36
2 3 3 3 4 3 2 2 2

11. Now that we found all the number at the bottom that will guide us to put the magic
square together and make sure that all of our number either up, down, left, right, and
side to side is equal to 60.
12. The largest number goes in the middle of the square because is the biggest one (20),
the second largest numbers will go on the corners of the square (24, 32,16,8) and the
last numbers goes in the middle (4,12,36,28).

24 4 32

28 20 12

8 36 16
