I discovered Joanna
Newsom just over a year ago.
Upon the first listen she was
odd, and her voice hard to
listen to. However, with more
time, you begin to appreciate
her unique voice and her use
of the harp to orchestrate her
songs.
This album
is one of my
favourite of
hers. Her first
song, Emily,
singing about
her sister and
her father and
what they
both meant
to her is
beautiful. How she talks about
their relationship speaks deeply
to me, with my own sisters and
what they mean to me.
As well, how well she
weaves meaning into the
song, both personal and just
the use of the words
themselves is impressive.
The next song in the album,
I discovered is about the
creation of the Ursa Major.
