Jakob Butturff Wins PBA Xtra Frame Kenn-Feld Group Classic

COLDWATER, Ohio – Jakob Butturff, an
unorthodox 24-year-old left-hander from
Tempe, Ariz., inserted himself into the
Professional Bowlers Association Player of
the Year conversation when he defeated
Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., 217-
182, to win the PBA Xtra Frame Kenn-
Feld Group Classic at Pla-Mor Lanes.
Butturff, who won the Go Bowling! PBA
60th Anniversary Classic earlier in the
year in Indianapolis, joins Australia’s
Jason Belmonte; EJ Tackett of Huntington,
Ind., and Andrew Anderson of Holly,
Mich., as the Go Bowling! PBA Tour’s
fourth two-time titlist in 2018.
Butturff, who uses a quirky double-joint-
ed delivery, entered the finals as the top
qualifier after overtaking Daugherty in the
final game of qualifying earlier in the day.
He then started the title match with four
strikes, but surrendered the lead when he
left and failed to convert the 1-3-7-9 in the
seventh frame. Daugherty, who had a
clean game including a turkey through

seven frames, lost his edge when he failed
to convert the 2-4-5-8 in the eighth frame
and then missed a 5 pin in the ninth.
“This win means everything,” Butturff,
now a four-time title winner, said before
turning his praise to the fans of Coldwater,
a rural community of just over 4,000 resi-
dents who turned out in droves to support
the 11th annual tournament. “Every time I
come in here, it’s amazing. The fans want

In the first match of the four-man
stepladder final, PBA Tour veteran Brad
Angelo of Lockport, N.Y., bowled an
error-free game, rolling a key strike in the
ninth frame and striking out in the 10th for
a dramatic win after defending champion
Rhino Page recovered from failing to con-
vert the 2-4-7-10 split in his fourth frame,
finishing with six strikes to force Angelo’s
hand. Angelo won, 228-225.
In the semifinal match, Daugherty got
some help when Angelo had three open
frames, throwing his own decisive string
of four strikes in a 226-188 victory to
advance to the championship match.
The 2018 Go Bowling! PBA Tour will
complete its domestic schedule with the
three-event FloBowling PBA Fall Swing
in suburban Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 14-20, fol-
lowed by the U.S. Open Oct. 24-31 in
Wichita, Kan. The Fall Swing will award
titles in the Wolf, Bear and Tulsa Opens,
all of which will be live streamed from

PBA International-World Bowling Tour

Passaic County USBC Hall of Fame Inducted Rich Shanley, Eric Nilson, Mark Wyckoff,
Larry Gonnello and Kyle Handoga in the Class of 2018

Recently hosted their 34th Hall of
Fame Induction Ceremony and din-
ner honoring the class of 2018 Rich
Shanley, Eric Nilson, Mark
Wyckoff, Larry Gonnello and Kyle
Handoga.
Larry Gonnello has been an active
member of the sport for over 30
years and consistency has been his
trademark throughout his bowling
career.
He has won titles in Passaic
County in three different decades
showing this remarkable consisten-
cy. He has four county titles on his
stellar resume. Two doubles titles,
one he won with Mike McCollum
during the 1986-87 season. The sec-
ond he won with Tom Jordan as his
partner. Being somewhat selfish and
once again consistent, Larry won All
Events Titles during the 1992-93
season, and followed that up with his
second All Events title during the
2007-08 season. Perhaps his best
title earned in Passaic County was a
State Scratch Doubles title earned in
a now defunct center, Astro Bowl.
Using the data obtained from the
bowl.com site, Larry has compiled a
10 year best composite average of
224.33 bowled in 1,029 games dur-
ing this time frame. He shows

remarkable consistency with a low
composite season of 218 and a high
of 229. Anyone that coaxes Larry
into bowling in a league with them
can almost guarantee getting a 225
average from Larry for that season.
He has bowled 15 confirmed 300
games and 9 confirmed 800 series.
Kyle Handoga has been a very
active part of the bowling communi-
ty most of his life. He started bowl-
ing at the young age of only 5 years
old. As the years went on he would
spend countless hours at the lanes
with his parents practicing as well as
joining the bowling team in high
school. In 2002 he even took his
team to states and claimed the title of
NJ State Bowling Champs! At the
age of 16 he started bowling Junior
Bowlers Tour (JBT). His weekends
now consisted of driving to every
JBT he could get to. A few months
after turning 18 Kyle bowled his first
300! Who knew that would be the
first of many. During Kyles years in
JBT’s he had numerous honor scores
and walked away with 11 JBT titles!
As an adult Kyle has continued to
practice and better himself as a
bowler. He has acquired a number of
Passaic County Titles over the years
as well. Including 2 All Events
Titles; one of which was in the this
years Open County Tournament
with a total of 2162. Kyle has also
won the Passaic County Doubles
three years in a row with none other
then Mr. Kenn Schlomman. He was
also the Passaic County Masters
Champion in 2009-2010.
Kyle has a 10 year composite aver-
age of 230.60 for 2,798 games. His
highest composite is 237 and he had
a single high league average of 241
one season. He currently has 28
sanctioned 300 games, as well as 27
sanctioned 800 series. His highest
series of his career happened in 2009
when he bowled 845 which consist-
ed of a 278-300-267.
Eric Nilson was an accomplished
bowler growing up as a junior
bowler in Central Jersey and was
skilled enough to be able to join the

ing team. He was a three year mem-
ber from 2006-2009 while also find-
ing the time to earn a degree in
Chemistry.
The 2008 – 2009 season was proba-
bly his finest as he was a member of
the Intercollegiate Team
Championships Crystal Pin winning
team. He also earned the Eastern
Intercollegiate Bowling Conference
MVP individual award that season
while posting the high average in
that league.
During his time at the University
he also found the time to begin
bowling in the adult leagues in North
Jersey. Success came quickly for
Eric as he earned championships in
both Passaic and Bergen County
during this time and a Runner up in
Passaic County All-Events and
Morris County Singles. Five career
titles in singles, doubles, team, and
all events have been earned in three
different New Jersey counties to
date, with runnerup finishes in a
fourth and local titles earned in
Virginia and top five finishes in the
Virginia state tournaments in 2014 &
2015.
Eric has a 10 year composite aver-
age of 222.83 for 1,393 games,
bowled in four different NJ counties
and also the state of Virginia. His
highest composite average for one
season during this period was 238
this past season and he has averaged
232 on two other occasions and at
this time he already has over 20 con-
firmed and sanctioned 300’s and

800’s to his credit.
Rich Shanley was introduced to
bowling by his father, Edward, at a
young age. He learned a lot by
watching all the bowlers of the very
competitive Postal League at
Parkway lanes. Eventually he
worked his way up to be the desig-
nated scorekeeper on the old Tel-E-
Score overhead projectors, using the
yellow wax pencils!
He started taking the game a little
more seriously in college, and even
took a one credit class at Rutgers in
the Fundamentals of Bowling (got
an A).
He has amassed thirteen 300
games and eleven 800 series and
eleven 11-in a row awards all in
Passaic County. He has a 10 year
composite average of 226.09 for 960
games bowled, his highest average is
237 and had 4 years with a compos-
ite average of 231 or higher.
Mark Wyckoff began bowling in
adult leagues during the 1998-1999
season at Butler Bowl.
His work schedule along with the
location easily allowed Mark to
begin bowling in Passaic County at
Van Houten Lanes a few years later,
in one of their best leagues, the
Victor Mandio Memorial league. He
positioned himself as one of the top
bowlers every year he bowled in that
center and in the county. During this
time he earned three county scratch
team titles and many other top five
finishes in singles, doubles, and all
events. Justifying his enshrinement
today as a Hall of Fame member
here and compiling the necessary
stats to be a Hall of Famer in other
counties as their age and longevity
requirements are met.
His best 10-year composite aver-
age is 230.35 for 1,890 games
bowled. If his current form contin-
ues, this 10 year composite average
will continue to climb as he has not
averaged under 233 as a composite
average for the past three seasons.
His highest season average to date is
243 while also topping the 240 mark
on two other occasions. He has a
total of 28 300 games and 25 800
series to his credit.

Johnson struck on six of seven shots on the right
lane and relied on trusting her judgment in using a
new bowling ball in the title match.
“We noticed the left lane was hooking a little more,
so I took out a ball at the last minute on the practice
pair to see what it looked like,” said Johnson, a 14-
time Team USA member. “It looked really good, so it
was the first ball I tried on the TV pair. That ball
never really saw the lanes during qualifying, but that
was my key to success the entire week. Quickly mak-
ing bold moves, trusting my instincts and really com-
mitting to it.”
Johnson’s win came in her third championship-
round appearance this season. She has advanced to
the finals in each of the three majors in 2018, includ-
ing a runner-up finish at the U.S. Women’s Open in
June.
The win not only was special for breaking through
for her first major, but also for being able to collect
the victory in front of a hometown crowd, including
family and friends. Johnson lives in nearby
McKinney, Texas, and works at Plano Super Bowl.
“I haven’t really processed it yet, but I know it’s
amazing,” Johnson said. “To win this in front of my
home crowd and family and on my home lanes is
going to be at the top of my list of accomplishments.”
Kulick made her first championship-round appear-
ance of the 2018 season this week, and the effort
helped her solidify her spot in the season-ending
PWBA Tour Championship next month.
She was able to make her run at Plano Super Bowl
after sharpening her physical game last month during
Team USA camp at the International Training and
Research Center in nearby Arlington, Texas.
“I had some really good physical keys from what I
worked on at Team USA camp, and it really helped

the coveted award at the Tour Championship, but her
third-place finish mathematically gave O’Keefe the
distinction for the first time in her career.
O’Keefe, a 39-year-old right-hander, won two titles
this season, including the United States Bowling
Congress Queens in May.
“It means the absolute world to me,” said O’Keefe,
who owns eight PWBA Tour titles. “All the hard
work, dedication, the tears, the frustrations – it’s all
worth it. I feel I’ve been knocking on the door, and
I’ve had some really good seasons. Last year, I fin-
ished third, the year before that was fifth. I’ve been
climbing that ladder and knocking on the door. I just
feel player of the year is something people always
will remember in your career. I have bucket-list items
that I’m trying to check off and that was just one of
them. So, to be able to mark that off, I can move on
to the next thing.”
Kulick advanced to the semifinal after starting her
match against 2018 PWBA Rookie of the Year Jordan
Richard of Tecumseh, Michigan, with seven consec-
utive strikes, finishing with a 244-171 win.
Richard, a 22-year-old right-hander making her
fourth consecutive television appearance, locked up
Rookie of the Year this week.
In the opening match, Richard delivered 10 strikes
on her way to a 244-156 victory over Lindsay
Boomershine of Perry, Utah.
Boomershine, who was making her second consec-
utive championship-round appearance at the PWBA
Players Championship, needed to win her first match
in order to earn enough points to advance to the Tour
Championship.
With Boomershine’s fifth-place finish, Shannon
Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, earned the final spot at
the Tour Championship from the points list.

major championships (among his 18 PBA Tour titles) and other unprece-
dented feats, the sport’s most popular (and/or most disliked) personality
– depending on your viewpoint regarding his two-handed technique –
has seen his “star” rise in his homeland.
Earlier this year, the Australia Broadcast Corporation – the country’s
version of America’s ABC-TV – profiled Belmonte’s life and bowling
career in a six-and-a-half minute segment on its popular prime time
“7:30” magazine-style program (http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/meet-the-

In July, “Inside Sport,” Australia’s version of “Sports Illustrated,” pub-
lished an eight-page tribute to Belmonte (https://www.pba.com/con-
tent/files/downloads/INSIDE_SPORT_magazine_July_2018.pdf) under
the headline, “That’s How He Rolls.”
And because Belmonte early-on embraced social media and its global
platforms, he has cultivated a world-wide fan base. Most recently, work-
ing with the wildly popular “Dude Perfect” YouTube channel for the
second time in four years, Belmonte helped orchestrate a series of out-
rageous “trick shots” that recorded more than 10 million views in the
first 24 hours (www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSB9JvsBT4M).
Editor’s Note: Dude Perfect is a group of former basketball players
and Texas A&M University roommates who created what has become
the second-largest YouTube channel in the world. The group teamed up
with Belmonte in 2014 to create “Bowling Trick Shots 1,” which has
since notched nearly 90 million views, many of them among the highly-
coveted youth market.
Among the trick shots on the first episode was a “two-handed, 250-
yard strike.” When he was approached to do a second version,
Belmonte said, “After the success of the first video, I knew we had to up
the ante. And after three days of shooting, I told the boys, I’m not sure
how we did it, but we just made a better video…”

BJI PUBLISHER DECLARES “BELMO” BOWLING’S
MOST INFLUENTIAL PLAYER
Speaking of Jason Belmonte, Bowlers Journal International publisher
Keith Hamilton, in his “Leading Off” column in September’s issue,
declares “Belmo” as “bowling’s most influential” player, citing the eye-
catching number of youth bowlers who are now throwing the ball using
Belmonte’s two-handed technique.
Relating statistics from the recently-completed USBC Junior Gold
Championships, Hamilton notes 25 percent of the U12 (12-and-under)
age group bowled two-handed as did 24 percent of the U15 players and
19 percent of the U20 players. Overall that represented 21 percent of the
entire field.
Hamilton’s conclusion: “By the time Belmonte is finished bowling, I’m
not certain how many titles he will have won. But his impact on the
game might just make him the most important and influential bowler
ever – and, without question, of the 21st century.”

FloBowling has retained Lucas Wiseman as its Senior Editor to produce editorial
content for the PBA’s new live streaming partner. Wiseman, who studied journalism
at the University of South Florida, has covered bowling for more than 20 years
including stints in the daily newspaper realm and 13 years in public relations and
social media positions with the United States Bowling Congress. Most recently he
worked as the public relations manager for a national sports marketing agency and
continued to cover bowling on a freelance basis.

HOWELL, NJ – John Furey of Solid 10 Pro Shop threw a 300 game and 761 series to lead
the scoring in the Coors Light League at Howell Lanes.
Second high series was Pete Marino tossing a 650, and third was Stephen Lella 643. Second
high game also was Furey with 237 followed by Will Vafides 231 and Stephen Lella 228.
Lauren Lella rolled a 614 series including a 222 and a 220 game. Shea McAllister threw a
215 and a 210 game. Shea McAllister 224-214 and 630 series and Lauren Lella 214-590.
