WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN-DAY PERIOD VALID 18TH TO 24TH
SEPTEMBER, 2018

Review of weather for the last Forecast for the next seven days (18th to 24th
seven-day period (10th to 16th September 2018):
September 2018): The forecast indicates that:
 Rainfall continued to be recorded over parts of  Most parts of the country are expected to experience hot and

are expected over the Eastern half and Northwestern parts of
the country.

1. WEATHER REVIEW FOR THE LAST SEVEN DAYS (10TH TO 16TH SEPTEMBER, 2018)
1.1 Rainfall Review
Rainfall continued to be recorded over parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift
Valley, Central and South Rift Valley and the Coast as depicted in Figures 1 and 2. Comparing this review
period (10th to 16th September, 2018) to the previous week (3rd to 9th September, 2018) it is noted that
there was a general decrease in rainfall amounts over several parts of the country although Lamu
station at the Coast recorded a slight increase.

During the period under review, Busia Ministry of Water station recorded the highest seven-day total
rainfall of 51.2mm. Other stations that recorded significant total rainfall amounts include Butere
station in Kakamega County (48.8mm) and Kericho station (28.3mm).

Butere station in Kakamega County recorded the highest amount of rainfall within 24 hours i.e. 24.5mm
on 14th September, 2018 in the same county, Busia Ministry of Water, recorded 24.1mm on the same
day. Kericho station recorded 21.5mm on 13th, no other stations recorded heavy rainfall in 24 hours.

 
1.2 Temperature Review

Comparing this review period (10th to 16th September, 2018) to the previous week (3rd to 9th September,
2018) it is noted that day-time (maximum) temperatures increased significantly throughout the
country, so did the night-time (minimum) temperatures except for a few stations including Narok,
Kericho, Eldoret, Ngong, Nyahururu and Mombasa recorded decreases.

Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 37.8°C on 13th
September while Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature

 
of 4.3oC on 12th September. The same stations recorded the highest seven-day average maximum
temperature of 36.3oC and the lowest seven-day average minimum temperature of 5.0°C respectively
(see Figure 3 below).

2. FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS FROM 18TH TO 24TH SEPTEMBER 2018.

The forecast for the next seven-day period is as follows:


 Most parts of the country are expected to experience hot and dry conditions.
 The Central Highlands (including Nairobi area) are likely to experience early morning cloudiness
that will give way to sunny intervals. Afternoon showers expected over few places;
 A few areas within the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Central and
South Rift Valley and the Coast are likely to receive rainfall;
 Morning rains expected over few places in Northeastern;
 Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of more than 25 knots are expected over the Eastern half
and Northwestern parts of the country.

DETAILED REGIONAL FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS 18TH TO 24TH SEPTEMBER 2018.

The Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley (Counties of
Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet,
Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia) are likely to
experience mainly sunny intervals in the mornings throughout the forecast period. Afternoon/night
showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places throughout the forecast period.

Northwestern (Counties of Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu) is likely to experience sunny intervals
during the day and partly cloudy skies during the night throughout the forecast period.

Central Highlands (including Nairobi area) (Counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga,
Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka) are likely to experience cool and cloudy early mornings
giving way to sunny intervals. Afternoon showers are expected over few places around Mt. Kenya region
throughout the forecast period. The nights are likely to be partly cloudy.

 
Northeastern (Counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo) is likely to experience mainly
sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy skies during the night throughout the forecast period.
Rains expected in the morning over few places on Friday and Saturday.

Southeastern Lowlands (Counties of Kajiado, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Taita Taveta) are likely to
experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy skies during the night throughout the
forecast period.

The Coastal Strip (counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale): is likely to experience
morning showers over several places on Thursday and few places throughout the forecast period apart
from Tuesday. Afternoon showers expected over few places on Thursday and Friday with sunny intervals
the rest of the days and the nights partly cloudy.

N.B: This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) forecast issued by this
Department.
